Would think Rance has a fair bit more currency than TMac. Would need to add a second round pick IMO.

If Rance was looking at getting out and wanted to stay in Melbourne, the Bulldogs would be the obvious destination club, because they're contending and his old man played there.

Isn't Rance 27-28? So he'd have 3 or 4 years left. And we'd have to give up something a little more than our first rounder next year and a Salem. I'm not sure it's worth it. Also not sure he'd consider a team not playing finals this year. He only has a few years left.

Further, hasn't he already come out of retirement once?

Seriously ? Football is a team sport. You have little understanding of football clubs and good culture if you think that is acceptable. I understand that clubs stagger returns to preseasons based on age and appropriate player loads but if you are trying to build a culture of "team first", the notion that a player can take a longer holiday because he plays well is contrary to good culture building. Rance is in the leadership group  - you want your leadership group setting some sort of example - first on the track and last off. 

I'll pose the question - where do you draw the line ? Dusty as you said has been great too - lets let him come back late as well. Jake Lloyd has been one of their better performing players  - maybe a week later for him ? Vickery on the other hand - make him come back 2 weeks early ? Once you make exceptions for players based on anything other than age and health, you are on a slippery slope.

What do you think of our backline currently as opposed to our midfield?

 

Don't trust a player that wants to walk less than 12 months after signing a 4 year deal...

I think our backline is raw, but continues to develop well. But our midfield could still do with a little more juice. 

And FWIW, I'd take Rance in a heartbeat if he was 25. I think he's too big a risk to take at his age.

Midfield: Viney, Brayshaw, Petracca, Salem, Oliver, Tyson

Backline: Maybe Hunt?

Midfield is important as always, but our backline is far more desperate for quality at the moment.

and salem can't even get on the ground to prove his worth at the moment.

 

none of the others are a-grade quality.

Over the next 5 seasons he'll be 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 - he's got at least 5 years left, most of them still in his prime.

Agreed. We need at least one AA quality midfielder, maybe two. IMO we have serviceable midfielders and very inexperienced midfielders with potential, but we lack that very high end mid with about 100+ games under their belt. I don't consider Nate Jones or Bernie to be in that category.

Rance would certainly be a good get, but I saw some good signs from OMac and Frost yesterday and think they will continue to improve with TMac next year.

High end mids (eg. Prestia or O'Meara, pending medicals, or similar) and a skilled, running half back (Hibbert) are on my Christmas wish list.

Improve the midfield and the backs will have less pressure put on them.

I'm not convinced he'd be worth the cost at this time. We need to give him a bit more time to become fully disenchanted at Richmond, watch him start phoning it in and just being good for a while, let the mumbling build, then take him at literally half the price in two years time, by which time we will be a much more desirable club to join.

Not the time to buy - the price will move in our favour from both ends!

Plus, we will see how our little mob of awkward 'teenage' defenders develop and what exactly we need.

If Gawn doesnt get AA ruckman this year I'll be livid, Goldy has been too out of form though injury to beat Gawn surely..

If we can get Rance id be thrilled, we have an army of cusp players like ANB, Newton, Michie, Dawes, Dunn, Garland, Grimes that all fit the bill for Richmond they need compeditors to aid their stars, given we expect them to do a full overhaul of their list take the chance to help with that. We would need to give maybe 2 or 3 of those players and a pick or 2  

ANB (a young ball winning prospect), Grimes (seniority), Dunn (hearty battleing defender), 2017 future pick (offer 2nd round but be willing to negotiate to 1st round or another player if they tighten the screws)

Dreams aside I think getting Rance is roughly a snowballs chance in hell.
