For a guy who hasn't been all that highly rated over the past 12-24 months he certainly passes the eye test

Get him in red and blue, a couple of pre seasons and 10 kgs of muscle added and we might have a good player.

He also has a couple of younger brothers I believe and we know that the younger brothers are often the better players.

Kai and Tahj, approx 4~ years younger than Kalani.

Tahj is currently playing for Broadbeach, unsure of Kai though.

What I think is informative is that they have NOT joined the gc17 academy

I am hoping it’s because they expect to be residing in Melbourne in the next 15-20 or so years…

That’s a great pickup r.e not joining the GC17 academy. I wasn’t aware of that. In saying that, given their age I presume they would still have the ability to join?

Fingers crossed it’s a meaningful nod to Melbourne life as you suggested 😜

I think Jeff spoke about this in an interview and said he didn't sign them up as he wanted them to just enjoy their junior footy atm.

But I agree, fingers crossed the family do think about moving back to Melbourne!

well i mean you'd think they would come back if kalani came to us right?

I mean, it’s inevitable

If Kalani nominated us, then the twins wouldn’t be joining the gc17 academy as they’ll be earmarked to join MFC

Jeff's separated with the mother of the boys, so an upheaval would be complicated...

I am sure we would help mum find work and accommodation in Melbourne if Kalani joined us and she wanted to be here with him.

prior to covid, my son was at prahran, a few years above oliver

oliver was so blonde his hair was almost a shock of white - made spotting him zipping around in the 'zones' winning his own footy when he was playing 'up' age groups very easy to see

Yeah Robbo said on the DeeBrief a couple of weeks ago that Greeny’s kid is very much one to watch in a couple of years time…

I’m not even certain Gold Coast could take him if they wanted / they have two players in their academy who will go top 10 well ahead of Kalani so I’m not sure how they could afford them all…

MFCSS kicking in - rule change for 2025 allowing more GCS selections …. 2026 “that wasn’t a great idea, revert to prior rules”. Mac Andrew precedent?

Great news on some potential future recruits. I was watching Kalani over the last few weeks, and noted it’s actually scary how good some of the Suns Academy players are. Suns Academy have three likely top 15 players (with Zeke Uwland definitely being top 5). Others are very very good.

I saw a youngster Max Hudson kick a bagful v Stingrays and noted his name. He reminded me of Daniel Turner. He’s only 6’3 ish but his marking judgement, sure hands and kicking was elite. He’s now kicked 12 goals across his 3 games. One to watch.

I've been keeping a close eye on young Harry McDonald, son of Junior McDonald. Harry plays for Albury Tigers juniors and whilst there is still water to go under the bridge, he's showing really good traits in becoming a handy footballer.

I’d bank on the FS being dead in the water by then.

Already on its last legs it’ll only take one more top 5 prospect getting to a top 4 club to kill it.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
