2016 will be a breakout year for...

It's got to be Jack Viney doesn't it.

I may be wrong but not sure he's had a full pre season yet but seems this one he hasn't missed a session.

Dont see anything holding him back this year!

What?

Last year wasn't good enough for you?

Missed 6 games but managed runner up in the Bluey...

Viney 'broke out' last year.

1. Offensive coaching.ย

ย

2. Jack Viney as a goal-kicking offensive mid (15 goals?)

ย

3. MFC supporters and staff veil of positivity that has been buried since Brad Miller killed them in a Freo final. ย Not many saw the cliff-face that was coming.

ย

4. Dean Kent to sprint toward Mike's 50 in 2 years if he can stay injury free.ย

See McQueen's post above re-Viney.

He's already broken out twice, surely he can't haveย anotherย breakout year!

I'm not sure the general public has really taken notice of Viney.

By the end of 2016, everyone will appreciate him as a quality player.

yeah. I love that the Oxen is excited about us again...

ย but lets just go quietly on our young kids, ย & let them make the statements on the footy field when they are good & ready to. ย we destroy too many kids at this club wanting the next big thing.

ย

I have higher expectations on players in their 4th seasons.... ย  they are the ones who need to be pushed a little.

You mean no pressure on a kid like this little gem from Tom Rockcliff re Josh Schache

โ€œIf you had of been up here on Friday and seen our trial match I would have given him a 15-year contract,โ€ Rockliff told SEN radio.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to put any pressure on the kid, but heโ€™s as good an 18-year-old player as Iโ€™ve seen.โ€

Another contender has to be Billy Stretch

Had a good pre season and his body is much further ahead than it was LY

That wasn't a shot at Jack. I think he can go to another level.

Not that I'm fussed what other clubs and the media/general fansย think, but I was more referring to competition wise as opposed to club wise.

Vandenberg. Looked the goods last year.ย Will never forget him smashing Scott Pendlebery with a bone crunchingย tackle last year in our victory against Collingwood. Would love him to that again with the added bulk he's put on over the pre season.

HaHa yes, ย something like that. ย  some players announce themselves before the supporters have taken much notice. ย  ย there is no stopping that type player.. ย ย lets see what happens re Scache.

same applies though, not to celebrateย before acceptances.

I have no idea what Hulett's like. Looks the right size.

That said, if he has a breakout year, and Jesse remains injury free for the season, it'll probably mean we're playing finals as we will have had two powerย forwards firing,ย presumably as a result of getting consistentlyย good clean entriesย from the mids.

ย

So many knowledgeable Demonlanders predicting (probably) half the players on our list to have breakout years. ย My (not so bold) prediction is that if a hand-fullย of these predictions come to fruition early in the season, Melbourne Footy Club memberships will break through the 40K barrier, and maybe push 45K. ย That would be a decent breakout year in anyone's language, and not entirely beyond the realms of possibility imo.

For what it's worth, I really like the look of Kent and Salem for 2016. ย Both of them have the traits to be 'game breakers'! ย Just hope the footy Gods keep them injury free.

....ย  and just the types we need to do just that, those midfield runner types to carry the ball & deliver.ย  AND they're not soft.

Love your optimism, but can barely see us hitting 40k let alone 45 this year.

Hathorn's membership growth from the early-mid 2000's to nowย has been greatly helped by the recruitment and development of genuine stars of the competition in players such asย Franklin and Rioli. Those two have gifted Hathorn aย new generation of supporters and members but have also inspired hope and change over the journey for the die-hards.ย Of course their consistent improvement on-fieldย as a footy club has contributed to their membership growth.

For us to get to 50k over the next couple of seasons will require the following:

Hogan to sign a long-term deal with us and to be universally considered the best key forward in the competition. A star.

Another couple of genuine stars to blossom from the following group: Petracca, Brayshaw, Oliver, Salem etc.

We actually need this to happen if we want to see long-term success and long-term membership growth.

I can only see us gettingย close to 40k this year if we start the season with a bang.

As for breakout year, one would have to say Salem if he stays on the park for the year. Has had pretty close to a full pre-season and has the talent and the competitiveness to match.

Whilst I am not disagreeing that he is not going to be playing as a more permanent forward, he will not a be a deep target and will be playing as more of the 5th as a forward, pushing up and down the ground and effectively playing as a midfielder whilst in that role as a HFF.
ย

Yeah, nah...

The following interview confirms what has been discussed over the summer.ย  Watts will play deeper to goal with a view to actually kicking goals.

35-40 goals must be the aim for a tall forward playing closer to goal. ย He needs to impact the scoreboard. ย It's his best chance to impact games.

"My whole preseason has been up forward" ย "the aim will be to try and kick some goals"

He hasn't trained in the midfield and clearly the club wants some goals out of him, which is how I'll be measuring his output.

He'll definitely have his opportunities. He'll be playing his natural positionย in a forward line with a target that will most often be double-teamed and a lot of creative players around him in Garlett, Kent and Petracca. This is his chance to prove himself.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
