'In describing Goodwin, Melksham said the first word that came to mind about the Adelaide great was that he was “driven”...“Everything he does, he commits 100 per cent … he believes in what he’s doing and he’s come from a successful background. He’s played in a few flags at Adelaide and he’s been there and done it, so you trust what he’s saying,” he said...“The club’s in very good hands and speaking with the players over the last few weeks, they’re really excited to have him on board with Roosy (Paul Roos). He’s brought a little bit of change to the club as well and I think this transition phase in the next year will be really smooth.”

These echo comments related in the op.  The underlined parts are terrific qualities in a coach to get his team on board and go on the journey with him.  

I don't think the stories about Goodwin are 'feel goods' to appease supporters in the off season.  Of course only on-field performance will be the telling.  Like Melksham says 'we are in good hands' and given where we have been that is quite something.

Well then ManDee, my 'tongue-in-cheek detection unit' must be in need for a complete overhaul - at the very least, a major service.

Goody has a reputttion for being an amazing game day coach, i think when he takes over he will have a Macca-Berveridge type impact.

not disbelieving you, but how do you arrive at that conclusion when he's never been a senior coach?

There's no real reason to be negative IMO, but Sydney were coming from a very different base. I don't think it's totally implausible for the same or a similar outcome from Goodwin within two or three years though.

That Roos has done it before, successfully, and learnt much out of the first time, fills me with confidence that we're in good hands.

Are there other coaches in the AFL who have successfully apprenticed their successor?

Shows great character and class from all parties.

I think you like a lot of posters have a bit of selective memory happening here. In the 2015 season we started to address this problem and when sides came back at us we steadied and then pushed on for the win...sometimes, not always of course and there were some bad results. This is part of a growing team.

I'm not as concerned about this now with the turnover of the list, the quality of kids in the team and the maturity of the FD...it sure was a problem though.

Just one more year of turning over the list and I'll be happy. Matt Jones, Grimes and Terlich still to go. Obviously, it won't stop there and shouldn't, but the D graders will be gone then and it will be a testament to the FD and Roos that in his three years he will have managed to completely transform the list again. Not only that, but the culture is on the improve and this will pave the way perfectly for our man Goodwin.

He has been a highly rated assistant for a few years now, must have thrown up some good match day suggestions to gain this reputation, a bit like Adam Simpson, he is fresh enough out of playing to know the game pretty well but unlike Hird, Buckley and Voss he has the experience as an assistant.

It's fair to say Bucks at least had 2 years as an assistant under Mick M....though neither was stoked about the arrangements!

Comparing Sydney then with Melbourne now isn't exactly apples with apples Paul.

Longmire coached to a flag not long after they had played in GFs and won a flag with Roos.

That is being a realist, not a Negative Nancy.

I can see it now.

We smash all three teams in the NAB challenge games under Goodies coaching.

Season proper starts and we perform miserably under Roos.

Demonland erupts in chorus that Roos must hand over to Goodwin immediately.

It's pretty simple hannibal, not a revelation. Comparing theRoos/Longmire handover at Sydney with Roos/Goodwin handover at Melbourne is a long stretch IMO

I think the younger players have led the way along with Jones and Vince.. Garland, Howe, Watts, Dawes and The Prince all went missing for large parts of the season.

Dunn had his moments. 

Some will tell you they haven't been coached properly because apparently you need a top line coach to have a bit of self respect. 

Its a killer when your getting flogged and losing the tackle count.

Garland no. Was solid last season.

No doubt a point well made. 

List talent and Goodwin's acumen will determine the club's success going forward.

It's the process, not the content that Roos and Jackson are worried are about.

it worked at Sydney with Longmire and over time, with learnings and improvements, will be effective at Melbourne.

At this stage, we have only an indication that the selection criteria was sound and Goodwin seems to be an astute choice, notwithstanding we went for Dew to begin with.

At least Goodwin has some decent cattle now just like Longmire did.
