I agree, they're nothing like the skinny mids that have failed us in the past.

I'll say it for the last time, I wasn't trashing Bernie and you know it. He has been fantastic for us and I wish we had more like him. I was making the point that a player in the last few years of his career, was rejected by his club, or let go by his club, or whatever you like to call it, is probably our best mid ATM.

I would hardly be quoting the Pies as an example after their 91 point loss today to the Tigers (who we beat)!

Petracca is the man and we are not as bad as you suggest in the midfield. We have problems in other parts of the ground.

the Pies are laying down, targeting a player. they have been for the last 8-9 weeks or so. they are aiming for a particular number pick, which should see them get the one they are after.

they're just not so desperate as the blues.

the draft is currently a sham. & so is our recent penalty for not guilty but we get to hand over $500,000.00 for the courts poor box.

We need star mids big time. I can't remember the last star mid we had. Maybe greg Wells. I am talking the Judd, Ablett, pendlebury that can handle a tag and still perform week in week out and dominate.

Robert Flower was a star. No doubt about it. But when he played he was a wingman when that position wasn't really a midfielder as we know them today. It's amazing how much the game has changed.

no you wrong La Dee, Robbie started as a wingman, but Barass moved him about, to teach him new aspects of the game, & also give other great runners a chance on the wings as well

Robbie also played HBF for some time, cleaning up the likes of Bartlet, Daicos, & others; CHF on some, including regularly taking Glendinning to the cleaners; & also as ruck-rover.

he would have no trouble shutting down Pendlebury & running off him, although in today's congestion, those blocking for the likes of Pendlebury could slow Robbie down.

the only weakness Robbie had, which was his beauty & poetry as well, was his ability to "own the ball", & try to do too much, such was the weakness of our late 70's teams.

Thanks Dee-luded. You're quite right that Barassi moved Flower around. But if you were to look for a definition of wingman in the Oxford dictionary, I'm sure you'll see it defined as "Robert Flower". That's how I'll always remember him. The peerless epitome of the wingman.
