Roos on SEN

Roos will be on SEN very soon for those who are interested.

Would appreciate a summary for those that get a listen

As will l as l am overseas.

Anyone hear it?

I tuned in (probably a bit late) to hear KB waffling on with some bloke about the Storm.

No mention of Roos.

Covered most of the same subjects as the Tuesday presser on Club website

On extending for 3rd year, still hasn't been asked for a decision

Ling/Kirk etc - going to find out who is available and interested and go from there, still believes you need to serve an apprenticeship

Frawley - wouldn't play him if Chip told him he had signed with another club today

Said because of 18 teams, there are some players, who are AFL players, but wouldn't necessarily get a game 20 years ago, in other words the real talend is spread too thin

On the Academies, said the Clubs involved are only doing what the AFL allows them to do

Said still sorting out the playing list, pleased with Watts, some of the young players got a name check, but still a long way to go

Pushing the line about the Coaches can provide some uselful infput to the AFL, ie should be regular Dinner with Gill

Acknowledged still a lot of work to do with the team

Think that's about it, try a question and will see if he covered it, the Club should be putting on the website as long as they get permission from SEN

Sometimes i find Roos really hard to listen too, i just start zoning out, lucky he isn't my coach!

Said because of 18 teams, there are some players, who are AFL players, but wouldn't necessarily get a game 20 years ago, in other words the real talend is spread too thin

well that doesn't make sense

1994 - pop. 18 million, 15 AFL sides, 1.20 mil per side

2014 - pop. 23 million, 18 AFL sides, 1.28 mil per side

Just took a well deserved break at work to listen to Roosy. Here's a light summary of what I heard and my interpretations:

-It sounds as though Roos is the perfect blend of nurturing but hard. He spoke about the players confidence with KB, about how the early days down there were really about chatting to the players as a mate, doing weights with them and so on to gauge their self esteem and confidence levels. Since then he's been building them with each player and spoke about how over the preseason and next year he'll apply more pressure to them.

-KB asked about a mark for the season. Roosy explained how they didn't have KPI's in terms of wins (heard this before) but that they were aiming to be competitive, which has definitely been achieved. Mentioned that he was a bit disappointed that we'd dropped off since about round 15 but consistency before that was great.

-KB met Watts and Jones at a function recently, was extremely impressed with the way they represented the club.

-KB mentioned the J. Cameron rumor and this was an interesting one. What was said will probably be interpreted differently by each person but I think Roosy aptly avoided the question. He went into a discussion about people are constantly talking to players management (etc) but his definitive statement seemed to be 'I'm not aware of any contact, direct or indirect'. My sentiment after hearing this is that we have been in contact with him.

-KB asked about Frawley. Roosy basically just said that he 'doesn't know' and said that Chip himself 'doesn't know'. He did go on to discuss free agency and the system in the NRL, more so about players continuing to play for a club after signing with another. His final statement here was along the lines of 'player should be invested in the club 100%, if not may as well leave'. I thought this was interesting.

-Spoke about the 3rd year at the Demons. Said he hasn't thought about it too much, which sounded genuine. If provided with a deadline for a decision he said he'd sit down with the family and discuss it but at this point I believe personally that a third year is a given.

- He then went on to discuss Cameron Ling vs Malthouse (lost interest a bit) and the aesthetics of the game these days. His opinion was along the lines of - talent spread thinly due to so many teams, players that definitely wouldn't have got a game twenty years ago are playing these days.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Django, appreciated.

Thanks Django, appreciated.

Yes, thanks. Good to get some news when you are away from home.

Or if you have an iphone (or I suppose any smartphone) the SEN app is really good for live streaming and replaying interviews.

I just love footy supporter logic. If someone says something, think the opposite.

That's an interesting point. However i think the other issue is these days kids play a broader range of sports and AFL does not have the same monopoly over elite athletes. My young fella is a good example. Took a year off footy to concentrate on basketball, but now wants to play soccer instead of aussie rules.

For this reason the academies are crucial and it is why Eddie is dead wrong. The gamble is that we can convert athletes in the northern states that might otherwise play say rugby to aussie rules. If we can't then 18 teams is too many an standards will (and have) fall away.

Given any thought to disowning him for being un-Australian?

His comment about players not putting in 100% might as well leave seems a pretty direct jab at Frawley, I think everyone's been saying the same thing on here. If he had any investment in the direction of this club he should sign. His reluctance shows he is far from 100% committed.

Without listening to the interview, based on that summary I'd say it's a given that we've been in touch with Cameron. It's no coincidence that two months ago murmurs started about him being unhappy and wanting to leave. And even if we aren't successful, we'll be pushing his contract price up significantly which will help cause other players to spill out of the club due to salary cap constraints.

In Frawley's defence, couldn't he be saying the same thing about Roos? I know if I were Frawley I'd like to know before I made up my mind whether to stay or go if Roos would still be there when I'm halfway through my next contract.

Edit: correct syntax problem

The opposite to what I said would be if Roosy said 'A third year definitely is not an option'...

No it's not, unless you heard the full interview, you are taking mine and Django's summaries out of context, not everyone on here is right....Frawley has the right to decide when he wants to, Roos says Frawley's input this season has not wavered

He should go into politics, he can waffle on for a good 5 minutes without actually saying anything.

Yep that's what i was getting at!

Um, sorry to dent your ego but I didn't quote or make any reference to your summary, only Django's. I also said I hadn't listened to the interview, so I was basing my comments entirely off his and thus could be wrong. I'll make a more informed opinion once I've heard the interview myself.

I'm sure if Django has any problems with my interpretation of his summary, he will let me know himself.

But thanks for your input.

Interesting point however the demographics of that 5 million increase may not lend itself to playing footy.

Perhaps the current thinking of many immigrants would see AFL as a third or fourth choice sport behind soccer or basketball in particular.

A change in this may take a generation or two.

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
