"Judge us after 5 rounds"

Ill say this much . So far Melbourne has not capitulated this year even when they have been down .

Still doesn't mean they haven't been beaten because they obviously have, but its how they have been beaten that is different at least in my eyes .

So far they have continued to fight on even when they know it it hopeless .

To me this is a major change all though it be a small one forward and you know what they say about small steps.

“But I'm taking small steps 'Cause I don't know where I'm going I'm taking small steps
And I don't know what to say.
Small steps,
Trying to pull myself together
And maybe I'll discover
A clue along the way!”

The crows have the third highest points for after 6 games, so how we restrict them (or fail to) will be an inductor of how we are improving. It will be a good test for the team.

They'll play a high risk game through the corridor. I don't think we'll have a high enough disposal efficiency to hurt them on the rebound, but they'll certainly give us a chance to hit them on the counter with their game style. You're right though, D. It'll be a really good test of our defensive capabilities. Our concentration is going to have to be high and we'll have to bring a work rate that we haven't seen from our side yet. We do this and we're a real chance. I can't see us getting enough goal kickers though. We need to start getting more goals out of our midfield. Dawes is not a bloke that is going to kick you regular bags of goals.

In some ways, playing against a high risk corridor game should suit is. We have increased or ability to shut teams down; this should apply tomorrow as well.

Our skills are good when not under pressure and if we can shut down high risk opposition corridor attacks we should be under less pressure when implementing counter attacks. In fact I'm pretty sure that is the preferred Roos game plan.

We have struggled entering attack when other teams have been able to set up. We've struggled with contested marking and don't have great crumbers. Quick movement is the key and counter attacking against a high risk opponent gives us that opportunity.

IF we can successfully shut down their attack ours could flourish.

That's my theory anyway! I don't expect to win but it will be a good test.

My biggest fear is that given the game will likely be played almost entirely through the corridor, our poor disposal will signal route one to goal for the opposition. Let's hope we can find some consistency and hit some targets tomorrow. What we must do is back ourselves on the counter.

Yeah that's good analysis. I don't believe our disposal really is that bad. In fact I think most AFL clubs look like they have great disposal when they are beating an opponent and look terrible when they are being shut down. When the are no attacking options because of a good quality, hard working opposition defence, "disposal" and decision making looks poor.

If we continually break down a high risk center corridor attack, our counter attack should be under low pressure. We still lack talent and form up forward which means we probably won't win the game.

It will be interesting to see if we take the counter attack wide to avoid the high risk corridor turn over, or if we just rebound straight up the guts.

Either way I expect a massive focus on making it a scrum through the centre and stopping Adelaide getting that Centre run they want.

Deanox - you're on fire.

Everything you've said here is absolutely spot on.

Ron (and anyone else), I didn't get to see the game today. Did it play out like I anticipated (only 4 goals better)?

It sounds like there may have been two games within the game (I.e. First half when we scored more and the second half when we tried to hang on). How did the tactics of each team look?

He understands that, he is a smart kid,all im saying us being a Dees supporter is Joyless, and the kids probably feel it the most,as they get stirred at school, and arent really given a chance to fall in love with the game or the team because they associate it with pain.

Having said that we both still have hope...we have to, its all weve got.......otherwise we would not call ourselves Demon supporters.

Hope you were able to watch today's game with him, if not make sure you are able to find a replay somewhere and get him to watch it. The team is improving and this was a great vicory on the road.

my perspective was that we absolutely dominated the first half, crows came out in 3q and took it up a notch, they were playing good footy and looked like they would snatch it, but our boys held firm and weathered it until the points were secure.. not great on paper but in the end we outgutsted them and outclassed them, and the umpires cost us about 3-4 goals no doubt about it

Thanks C&B.

Any ideas went we dominated the first and not the second? We're they down in the first or were we down in the second?

Or was it related to style of game?

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
