Because he looks like Salem or because he wore number 3?

You're right, T. It doesn't. But Watts is playing on a wing, with occasional rotations across half back and half forward. Garland is solely a defender and Pederson is a KPF/B and 2nd ruck. They're very different, IMO.

Pedo was playing a running midfield role along with second ruck against Sydney, and did a fantastic job. Garland to defence, Pedo to the wing, Watts to Casey. Job done.

More blokes should have got to him but let me just say that the first thing Tyson said to Salem was 'there were better options than an off-balance snap.' Salem admitted as much after the game when he said he should have given the handball.

It wasn't a good look. In fact it was a very bad one, and not a defensible one.

I saw enough in that quarter to suggest that he holds a large amount of promise.

Strong one grab hands, a couple of very good flat kicks culminating from right decisions, a willingness to take responsibilty, some ball attracting ability and a strong body that is hard to knock.

Was not overawed in the slightest and looked like he belonged.

I am all for players like KH and Salem playing on their insticts if they get a sniff of goals. As long as they contribute regular 1% ers and score more goals than they miss then thats fine with me. That KH/Dawes example is a time when instinct delivered under extreme pressure. If he dished out to Dawes, the pressure would have moved quickly back on Dawes and he was no certainty to score or even get a kick away. Given our inability to score a decent amount of goals, guys that can make something out of nothing are a blessing. No one expects Cyril Rioli to dish out the ball wnen he sniffs a goal.

Use the glass half full approach instead and compare him with the many others in their first games who look lost and never found their way. (I was going to name some players as examples - there are plenty to choose from - but no need to rub it in).

One of the best things about Salems goal was the fact every single player in the team got around him after he kicked it. It used to make me sick that when we were losing by 100 points our new boys would kick a goal and noone would even high 5 him. It's a great sign of the change in culture at the club. Players are playing for one and other again.

After he kicked it, it was in fact Dunn who signalled to those in the back half to make the effort to get down there to congratulate him.

In years gone by, Dunn's 'leadership' has been anything but, but in full credit to him he's turned himself around and he's transformed into a player I have a lot more time for and lot more respect for.

As has been said, I wonder if that was more a byproduct of him getting a lot of attention in the NAB game v Richmond, coupled maybe with the fact that we were completely devoid of spirit at that point in the West Coast game.
