Adelaide have just delisted Shaun McKernan - still only 23 although hasn't shown much in that time to be honest. Is he worth a look?

Correct. He wanted to come back to Vic, they shopped him but got little interest, although it's not clear how much Adelaide were asking in return.

Will probably get another shot through a late pick or rookie list spot although I wouldn't have thought there would be great interest from our end.

If he's still available late in the draft I'd use a late pick on McKernan, has talent, just a matter of whether he can get the best out of him.

Couldn't hurt to have another player who can play ruck or forward.

Whatever, we have to remember we are not a prize destination for experienced players looking for finals to finish their careers.

We are more likely to get a younger player or two who can't get a run at their clubs.

Perhaps Visy are going into making vacuum cleaner bags and Carlton's expecting to be able to Hoover up all the loose talent.

At the Pie Night Roosy spoke about how the Rules in the Tac Cup worked well in the favour of the big talls - something about how teams aren't allowed to flood or double team and that they are generally a good 10cms taller than their opponent. Basically he suggested you can't get a good read on a tall player who's killing it in the TAC Cup because he's not playing in 'like on like' conditions - whereas a midfielder in the TAC Cup is a lot easier to read and project their potential as they are essentially playing under mirrored AFL conditions against their 'like' opponents.

This is why he said he wouldn't be using a 'top' pick on a prospective tall as it was still a gamble - whereas a top pick on a midfielder was a safer option.

I'd never heard that philosophy before but I remember hearing it and thinking how simple it was and yet I'd never considered it.

The only issue with this is that the majority of the best key position forwards for any club in the league were first round draft picks. The only exceptions to that rule are Drew Petrie (pick 23), Crameri (rookie pick), father son picks (prior to the f/s being changed) and NSW scholarship players. Most of the following players haven't moved clubs as well:

Adelaide: Walker (taken as a NSW academy player)

Brisbane: Do they have one? Brown (father son)

Carlton: Henderson (pick 8)/ Waite (father son)

Collingwood: Cloke (father son)/ Reid (pick 8)

Essendon: Daniher (father son/ pick 10)

Freo: Pavlich (pick 4)

Geelong: Hawkins (father son)

Gold Coast: Dixon (outside of draft)/ Day(pick 3)/ Lynch (pick 11)

GWS: Boyd (pick 1)/ Patton (pick 1)/ Cameron (outside of draft)

Bolded players are those not listed above and generally don't play as the number 1 forward. Gunston, Darling, Tippett were all early 2nd round picks, Josh Jenkins was a rookie pick.

Although it's a valid point that judging young talls on TAC cup form is flawed as they are often much bigger than their opponents (height wise at least) it must be noted that of the players I listed above the vast majority were either first round picks or father son picks (who would have likely gone first round). Unfortunately the stats are that it's only about 1/2 key forwards taken in the first round of the draft that make it, but it's the proven way of finding one.

i'm not sure how that works tho - surely the best talls are playing on one another as well? e.g. goddard on mccartin, durdin on wright, etc, etc.?

Sometimes, sometimes not. I had a friend go through the TAC cup system who was 6'0 and 95kg at 17, he regularly played full back on the 6'4+/ 70kg talls because he could match them for speed and ragdoll them if it was a contested situation. Quite a few people he played on were early picks and he beat the majority of them convincingly.

You can make stats read the way you want them. I could add that a third of those were traded. This is what roos does. Sydney have got in plugger, hall, franklin and Tippett just off the top of my head. He will do this instead of drafting them.

I'll believe that will work when we move to Sydney and get the attraction of outside the cap AFL ambassador payments, maybe a form of COLA, set up a team right near Bondi and give the players relative anonymity to party it up or sit at home doing whatever Plugger did.

That said Hogan, Dawes, Fitzpatrick, Gawn we can worry about key forwards later. Right now I'm interested in two way running players who can either use the ball very well or win the ball very well and can preferably do a bit of both. Not fussed what designated position they usually play be it half forward, half back, wing or in the guts just as long as they have the attributes.

Players i'd like Melbourne to hopefully target at the end of the year.

Patrick Dangerfield- Complete longshot and we'd have to offer our best pick for the bull himself. Also, a pretty healthy pay packet. I'd assume only possible if Frawley Leaves.

Josh Jenkins- Absolute unit. He'd fit nicely with Hogan, Dawes, JKH and Howe down there.

Matt Rosa- Quick midfielder and a free agent, he'd definitely be worth a look.

David Mckay- A free agent who we have targeted previously, i'd love to lure him to the dees. Has dash that we need off half back.

Nathan Fyfe- Same boat as Dangerfield

Dane Swan- I know for a fact that he does not exactly love Buckley. Would come for abit of money and a free agent, we should seriously do our best to lure him.

Adam Tomlinson- In all honesty he'd be my favourite target out of this whole list. I rate him almost as high as Jesse Hogan, no joke. He's an absolute jet of a footballer and would love to take him off GWS (i'm still sad about Scully)

Will Hoskin-Elliot- Same boat as Tomlinson, would love to steal him off GWS

Put Beams on that list intstead of Swan. He's gettable.

I've heard Frost's name mentioned by a couple of different sources now, haven't seen much of him.

Someone threw up Tex Walkers name recently, I believe he's got another year on his contract, couldn't see any reason why he'd leave, he's a required player at Adelaide and already on good money.

I wouldn't mind Beams from Collingwood, apparently he's on Brisbane's radar.

As for what 'Roos does', yes he trades in players but the examples you've used are flat out wrong. Roos was Sydney's coach from 2002-2010. Barry Hall was the only example you used that was correct. Plugger went to Sydney in 1995, Tippett in 2013, Franklin in 2014 - none of them related to Roos. He managed to trade in Hall, hopefully he can trade someone of a similar calibre in to Melbourne.

Of the 29 players listed, only 7 are not at their original club - Henderson (Fevola deal), Franklin (Stupid money), Crameri, Schulz, Gunston, Jenkins (was delisted by Essendon), Tippett (Stupid money).

I wasn't saying he wouldn't trade them in, but the overwhelming weight of evidence says that these players are taken early in the draft and rarely change clubs. 5/7 switched clubs due to 'exceptional' circumstances - Henderson was traded as part of the Fevola deal, Franklin, Tippett and Crameri got massive money and Gunston was home sick. Talking to a Hawthorn supporter on the weekend, and I made the observation that Suckling would look good running of Melbournes backline, and he mentioned that he's definitely gettable; as he is viewed as a one trick pony (a very good trick, mind you) who is quickly getting overtaken by others. The knock apparent is that he's not viewed as strong overhead, or in the contest.

Would Suckling and Malceski, with Dunn and Jetta provide the run and carry we need, with Garland and McDonald our stoppers (of course Jetta, Dunn, Malceski are stoppers as well.

Don't try and put words in my mouth. I didn't says roos got all those players. I said Sydney did.

I disagree on the rarely change clubs aspect. It happens every season and will happen more and more with free agency.

We as a club unfortunately are not a preferred location for anyone at the minute. I for one hate this. We are at the bottom at the wrong time and for a number of reasons.

I have said for years that we have been neglecting our midfield by not picking pure midfielders. I'm not talking outside run with the ball players because we picked them every year. Maybe we picked the wrong ones or didn't teach them properly but that is another topic.

We have hogan and must teach and look after him properly. If we lose him we will be stuffed in a lot of ways. We can try and trade in guys around him. He can be our gun if we do the right things.

This trade period and draft have to be about getting mids who can get the ball and rack up numbers. Our midfield is the worst in the afl. I don't like sledging players but whilst guys like Mckenzie and m jones get games we will be ordinary. I don't want McCartin or wright at the expense of Brayshaw or petracca or ahern. Laverde is a different player again and I'm not sure we have the luxury of picking.

Names of players get thrown around at this time of the year all the time. I don't really care who they are and what their past is as long as they can improve us and make us win. I'm sick of losing.

We might use our picks to trade in a tall like frost or jaksch but I hope we bring in at least 5 or 6 more mids in the trade/draft period.
