I had a chat to him at an after match function once and I feel like he had unrealistic views on his position in the team which I believe is a massive reason why he never cracked it, because he believed he already had made it. All the best to him however, he is doing what all footballers ever want to do, to play football with his brothers in his hometown.

Seemed like a ripping character/bloke off the field whenever interviewed. Did you get that impression?

agree, & this is the rotten culture @ melbourne for way too long. & a large part of why our kids didn't develop & our so called stars stalled in their own shadows.

Not unusual for a star junior to feel that way. A lot of them have no defensive skills, and cruise around because they have always done it that way.

The big problem, and I have been banging on about it for years, is the lack of leadership at our club. Robbo, Yze, White, Bruce, Green, etc were not leaders and we had a void for a long time.

Imagine what Jono Brown would have done to Gysberts when he said it was too hot to run a time trial. He would have snapped him in two. Or Morton when he refused to pick up his man. or broke a team rule like kicking to the centre of the ground instead of the boundary.

Without leaders the juniors have no guidance. Neeld tried to bring them in but I have a lot more faith in Roos and who he has brought to the club.

Morton at a proper club would never have played 74 games.

Cale is a bit like Jordan Gysberts, they both have bags of talent but lack the dedication to actually stay at the top. I think that neither player worked hard enough on their frame in the gym. They both want to play football but do not want do to do the training.

Not quite right IMMHO: they both would like to play AFL but neither (appear to) want to enough.

To me that is a huge difference, but than as I have said many a time before, I am a proud pedant.

totally agree: but i was unaware of it for some time as I was just an watcher without getting into the nitty gritties.

i started taking a closer interest after around 2004 when we just weren't getting anywhere.

after a couple of years of closer inspection, still from the outside, it became more & more apparent that the tail was well in control, even with Nietz & Jnr @ the club... so that means the rot was all the way from the biggest fishes head, & moving along its spine.

It will always trouble me that we will fall back, between generations, as the disciplines deeminish, after the good coaches & boards have gone.

finally tho, we have strong leadership thrust on us, & the help of true talent in the Footy dept'.
