I would say they were good pick ups at 18,19 & 20. Grundy was a steal and Kennedy was also seen as an earlier pick.

I would also say that many thought Tapscott was a steal when we got him (unfortunately hasn't come on) and it had nothing to do with Trengove being his mate that we picked him.

I think Roos needs to come in a give players exact positions/roles so they can focus all their effort toward that role. Tappy, Watts, Jetta, Pedersen are key examples.

Roos needs to just say "look I think your best position would be playing a chappy role - foward flank with stints in the midfield. Now go away and focus on moulding yourself on his game - get your body right, work on your goal kicking, work on your agility etc.).

I think Tappy current body is just not suited for the backline or to be a full time midfielder - lacks pace and agility.

Give him a specific role, tell him what he needs to work on and leave the ball in his court.

does this (our recruiting & development & footy think) go to show how innocent we've been off the field as a club in past generations, picking all the nice ones & missing most of the hardened ones. And even sacking plenty of hard rrrssed types along the way who go on to finals.

our off field people have not helped us one bit really, over 20 years something.

our elections have left a lot to be desired, with the way directors have left this club floundering time & again. no wonder we're a laughing stock in AFL, & we have been for a good 10 years.

Many supporters were crowing about getting Tapscott.

Also opposition supporters bemoaning not selecting him.

Personally, I saw a manchild that was hard at the footy and had a good kick.

Couldn't find a lot of the footy, wasn't particularly fast or agile...

Kids can always improve or overcome these limitations, but it's always a big gamble.

we've seen flashes of tappy's play, but not much of it.

is this because of tappy,,, or is it more about our culture, that so many over 25+ years have found it hard to 'grow' within???

only a few have got the most from themselves, & I would say that green & bruce, robbo, etc, did not reach they're potentials with us.

from the little bit i watched, I wasn't all that excited with sheed. maybe I need to watch again, as others have salivated. I may have not payed attention.

I will preface this by saying that I haven't seen much of any junior players this year.

Sheed will need to become an inside clearance player at AFL level to be really good. I'm just not sure he has the quickness or innate ability to make space for himself in close to become a top level clearance mid. At AFL level you don't have the space and time that you get at under 18 level, so you need a few tricks to be effective. These might be in terms of size, ability to feed the ball quickly, agility, ability to buy yourself time with the footy or speed.

I just see an honest footballer who does a lot of good, boring things to a decent level. Many compare him to Priddis, but I don't think he has his tricks. Priddis has very quick hands, which makes him effecting as a stoppage mid, which I didn't see in Sheed. He's very meat and potatoes, but does appear to have a high level of maturity (physically and mentally in his understanding of the game). But I don't think that this production will translate as well at AFL level.

I think it would be spending pick 9 on Brad Sewell. I wouldn't do it.

I would be happy with Billings , watched him two years ago in U/18 champs as an under age player and stood out with his class ,goal kicking, and marking. Just the polish we will need to go with our grunt (jones , Viney, trengrove, tyson .)

we have grunt to compliment? Maybe now with Cross and Vince?? Otherwise Jones was our entire grunt with Viney to come on.

Are any of these players actually mates of Hogan or just mates he played footy with? Knowing someone reasonably well and for a length of time might help you settle in but doesn't necessarily make them the type of mates you'd make life decisions on.

We took Tapscott because we thought he'd be a good player, I was never under the impression that it was to please Trengove. Those draft blurbs are interesting reading, Tapscott may well be the best kick of the draft, but like Strauss we'd never know because he never has the damn ball.

The only notable case I know of where a club took a player to complete the set was Carlton taking Jeff Garlett in the rookie draft to help settle prized pick Chris Yarran. Little did they know they were actually taking the better player of the two. There was also talk that GWS favoured Victorians Ploughman and O'Rourke over South Australian Toumpas for mateship reasons, but I can't remember whether there was any actual evidence of that or if it was just MFC fans making stuff up to justify the slide.
