Fyfe? Wouldn't have thought so.

Moreso Mundy.

No Melbourne supporters would have wanted Fyfe. He was too skinny.

Why you are blaming us for us not picking Fyfe I don't know. We were more than happy with the one below taken 9 picks earlier:

From the little footage I've seen Aish strikes me as another Gibbs / Trengove / Toumpas type.

Medium size. One paced. A lovely kick and good decision maker, but not ferocious enough to play inside, and not quick enough to play outside.

Does he have enough tricks to be elite at the next level where he won't have as much time?

Aish's skills are elite. He is one of the best kicks in the draft, and is good on both sides. He has good pace and is often bursting through traffic and dodging tacklers. He is more outside at this stage, but wins ball inside when required and will become a well rounded midfielder in the Trent Cotchin mould at AFL level. He is all class and the likely #2 at this stage.

I agree, I really like how he can see what's around him and make a quick, correct decision and execute well. Really impressed.

That's fair. If anyone remembers Gibbs pre-draft the hype was extraordinary. Aish could easily turn out to be another disappointing Gibbs, who doesn't like to get his nose dirty, but he could also turn out to be a gun. Cotchin was tagged out of the championships and started to have question marks too.

As usual, we'll hope that in the fullness of time we'll look back and say we got it right.

I like the fact that Aish is actually on the park atm, other than Sheed.

So no doubt we'll be looking closely at Aish, Kelly and Scharenberg between now and draft time.

I like Sheed as a player and loved his championships, but the common consensus at the moment is that Aish, Kelly and Scharenberg are vying for #2.

Sheed killing the championships appears to have surprised many, so I'd like to know how well he was going before the championships, most had him 10-15 beforehand.

Kelly hasn't exactly set the TAC cup on fire either, so I do see why Aish is the logical #2 pick for most.

It's going to be very interesting how it plays out.

But If we were keen on Kelly last year, then I cannot see us overlooking him this year.

Between Kelly and Aish for mine.

Scharenberg is nothing like Fyfe.

Mundy was an accurate comparison.

I take that back, you are right there. Funny thing is I perceive Fyfe as the taller of the two but Mundy is deceptive.

There's something about Scharenberg that looks right, I hope we get two early picks. With Hogan, Viney, Toumpas and Kent we could be well set up now with some senior players that can lead the way in Garland, Jones, Dawes, Clark and Frawley around.

So am I.

Not really llike Fyfe, much more like Mundy.

Yep, read previous post.

Are you kidding? He has tricks.

Agility and quickness are his biggest strengths, in my opinion.

So far from one-paced, I can't believe someone would say it.

His evasive skills are first class.

If it comes down to those two then I'd take Aish, but I'm really keen on Sheed, Dunstan or Billings.

IMO there is better talent available at pick 2 than Dunstan...

Sheed was A LOT cleaner than Dunstan in the champs..

My choice would be

AISH

and hope his Norwood Team mate DUMONT is still there for our 2nd Pick

And now he's being tagged out of AFL games, while Richmond are looking far weaker for it.

I think he has been playing with an injury for a large portion of the season, his game on the weekend was very good and I think he is just getting back to full finess. Jump on in DT if you haven't already got him he is dirt cheap. Unless you are in the Demonland Rookies league in which case don't as I will be versing you.

I liked the way Aish handled the tag. Whilst his numbers were down (his preparation has to be taken into account, as well as the managing of his load), what I did see was a willingness to increase his defensive involvements. From recollection, Cotchin got frustrated with the attention he received from McGinnity before getting worn down. Aish kept working hard to try and find other ways to contribute to the team even if he wasn’t the primary playmaker.

What he did when he had the ball was something else. His efficiency was elite. This stat can often be distorted by players who might hit a lot of safe, short targets, but in Aish’s case his involvements were often medium to long distance passes that directly led to scoring opportunities for SA.

Small interview with some in-game footage for those that are interested.

Aish shoulders the draft burden

He actually looks like he has physically developed a little more since the start of the season, maybe an extra kg or two.

EDIT: From the interview that it.

Agree mate, he hit up targets whilst under maximum pressure. The kid is a real talent and I wouldn't be disappointed to have him at Melbourne.

This kid is rated as the clear number 2 at the moment. I have to admit that his size is an issue for me. We have had too many skinny kids in recent years and look set to pick up Stretch next year who looks to be a bit of a beanpole too.

So I did a bit of looking around at some old phantom drafts to compare to others his size when drafted.

CALLAN WARD 184cm 73kg Now - 185cm / 83kg

Will Hoskin-Elliot 186cm, 73kg Now- 186cm /76kg

Chad Wingard 182cm, 77kg Now - 182cm / 78kg

Devon Smith - 175cm, 76kg Now 174cm / 76kg

Hamish Hartlett- 182cm, 74kg Now - 185cm / 83kg

Stephen Coniglio / 182cm / 76kg Now - 182cm / 81kg

Sam Blease - Midfielder - 183cm, 72kg Now - 184cm / 77kg

Stephen Hill - Midfielder - 182cm, 72kg Now - 182cm / 82kg

Jake Melksham 182cm / 70kg Now - 186cm / 84kg

Dan Hannebery - Midfielder - 182cm, 75kg Now 181cm / 81kg

David Zaharakis - Midfielder - 180cm, 73kg Now 185cm / 85kg

Tom Scully - Midfielder - 182cm / 74kg Now - 181cm / 78kg

Ryan Bastinac 183cm / 74kg Now - 184cm / 84kg

Lachie Whitfield - 184cm / 74kg Now - 187cm / 75kg

Verdict: His size wont matter if he is good enough.

Two interesting observations;

1) The added bulk of the Essendon players and

2) Devon Smith is shrinking

Yeah, not sure about Devon but Scully's knee has taken 1cm off him.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
