Just got nominated for rising star against the dees.

Meanwhile Salem is developing at Casey.

So did Gysberts, twice and he's developing out at Norwood. Who would have guessed?

It's great to see we've maintained our record for players from other teams getting the rising star against us. Seemed like we had about 5 at least last year.

We have spent the last 10 odd years going for the development player over the ready made player with our early picks. Sorry just irks me seeing Martin, Wines, Darling Rockliff and so on tear it up week out while our guys continue to develop at Casey.

That's it. Better tear up Salem's contract right now as clearly his career is over.

I reckon a few others didin't win a rising star nomination in round 1 2014 that will go on to be good players, wgaf

No, we've spent 10 odd years not developing properly. That's why Salem didn't play.

As I ranted on another thread recently that every year we seem to be defending our first rounder picks, they need time, they have more upside, or we have stuffed up their development yet again, this goes back to 2007 for heavens sake!

Why the hell is that? Meantime other teams that have got it right and I point to West Coke who have done a complete rebuild inside, what 5 years by picking tough, hard kids ready to go as far as I can see anyway, perhaps with Nic Nat as their big project player. We have consistently walked past hard nut kids in the first round, I just do not get it!

it would be great if a positive jury decision had come in on any of our first round picks since 2007. I think the score card is zero at this stage. The jury is still out on the true value of Watts, Trengove, Tapscot, Blease, Strauss, Toumpas, etc. Some other of our first round picks have moved on, Gysbert, Maric, Cook etc.

And I bet crows fans thought the same when they took Dangerfield ahead of rioli, or brad ebert. Hell I bet tiger fans thought that about Cotchin when palmer won that years rising star. The same posters wanting a quick fix on here is getting tiresome. St kilda wouldn't even have wanted Dunstan to play had their midfield been fit. What about the 11 players picked between Salem and Dunstan? Better slag them off too

... we have stuffed up their development yet again, this goes back to 2007 for heavens sake!

It's simple statistics, really. Each year, between one and three draft picks play like a senior player in their first year. Let's say there's an average of two. Each team takes an average of about 4 new players per draft, I guess? This means that in any given year you've got about a 12.5% chance of snagging a "first year gun". The probability that you will not get a "first year gun" in seven years of trying is a not inconsiderable 39.3%. So it's perfectly easy to explain why we haven't had one through that method alone.

Further, however, I put it to you that we have had a first year gun in that time... three, in fact. Cale Morton, Tom Scully, and Jack Trengove. All three played top quality football in their first year. At the end of year one Scully looked like the best draft pick anyone had seen for ages. He signed a six million dollar contract off the back of that year. By the end of year two Trengove looked like Jimmy Bartel reborn. Morton was inconsistent, sure, but he played some unbelievable games in his first year or two and other clubs were kicking themselves that he was with us.

So, in short, you're revising history to suit your sob story. Sorry, but it doesn't stack up.

Well we didn't this year, Salem is a hard nut with very good skills to match.

Sorry - in what bloody parallel universe was Rockliff "ready made" or did he "tear it up week out" in his first season?!

Now you're just making sh** up.

Rockliff was not even close to being fit enough for an AFL level midfielder, until he spent a preseason with a boxing coach in Melbourne (Ray Giles), prior to beginning his second season, having played a solitary game in his first season.

Once again, you don't know what you're talking about.

Rjay I hope you are right but all I point to is we are yet again talking about a first rounder in the hope he develops over time versus some one else's pick, who is firing early. It is getting tiring and if we had been proven correct, on any of our picks since 2007 I would be more relaxed.

In short at this early stage I would go for a Dunstan over Salem as I would go Ollie Wines vs Toumpas etc and it goes on, do we pick hard nuts, ready to go types versus highly skilled kids needing development. I have my opinion anyway.

No, you're not right in this case. Salem would have been ready if he wasn't pulled back a bit prior to Christmas, seems he had a thyroid complaint. Roos will be a bit more conservative about giving games to first year players but he is not a project player. Hunt is the project player.

Also remember he was part of the Tyson deal and I reckon Tyson was pretty good the other night.

I hope you are right on this one. We are all wanting the same outcome, it is just that we can't keep stuffing up first round draft picks! Let us hope we have finally nailed it with two exceptional kids!

Well Tyson lit Etihad on fire on Saturday night, and Salem is being compared to Luke Hodge, so yeah just a little guess but i think we got it, and Jayden Hunt was a part of that package too, he seems like a handy half back, Roosy knows what he is doing
