I have only been a supporter of the Melbourne FC since 1997. I come from Queensland and grew up playing Rugby League and Union as young child. I spent 13 years in the West surrounded by Eagles and Dockers fans before moving back home with my young family.

As a supporter of a sporting side I have always thought that I was pretty level headed and could be quite balanced in my approach to providing that support. I loved to watch other teams play and enjoy the spectacle of the game. The last few years I have become increasingly obsessed with football and find my self in the off season getting very impatient with the lack of football in particular not being able to see the Mighty Demons playing. The last few years have also hardened my resolve and passion towards the boys. I can honestly say I am a one eyed supporter who is more ferociously vocal and feral when I watch the Dee's play. I also now hate every other team in the AFL with a passion because I only want success for one team and that is the demons.Whether this is good or bad remains to be seen, but I find it an interesting side effect that our boys are struggling on field and I am becoming more and more resolute in my view that they are the only team for me. It has now become a case of Us against Them and for me that is both disturbing and exhilarating.

So bring it on Media Commentators and bring it on opposition supporters because regardless of who the President, Board, CEO or Coach is, I Support Melbourne FC!

Great post! The MFC grows on us in many ways similar to an abusive spouse or stockholm syndrome.

Nice post FerDaDee, and it shows a couple of things. Firstly that adversity can breed stronger bonds and a desire for solidarity. Secondly, that consistent success doesn't translate as directly to supporter numbers growth as may seem. Sure, it helps a lot, and makes selling the club to potential supporters easier, but St. Kilda are exceptional to this 'truth'. They have been worse for longer, and without the ultimate success than any other AFL club, but their support is vocal, large, and has a distinctive personality of its own.

No doubt we have the toughest supporters in the league. We might not be many, but that die hard core will always be there and I reckon this period is hardening many of us into fanatics.

Well great to hear your story so I will tell you why I am a MFC Supporter/Member.

I been an MFC supporter since 1999 after changing teams from the WCE. I am generally a very loyal supporter of any team I support but no longer support the WCE after the introduction of the 'Host Club' scheme in the WAFL (that where the Eagles and Dockers had arrangements with a specific WAFL team and placed all their players in that one team). I was ever a truely passionate WCE supporter as they simply had the wrong colours and theme song.

I was born with one eye red and the other blue which is to say a West Perth football club supporter. For those of you who do not know the WAFL, West Perth also has red and blue as its team colours as well as the same club theme song as the MFC and is the oldest club in the WAFL (was an easy choice to become a MFC supporter). I still remember the WCE reserve team (East Perth) smashing my beloved West Perth in the 2002 WAFL Grand Final. I will never forgive or forget that day, from memory I think East Perth won four Premierships in a row under the host club arrangements.

My passion for the MFC has grown each years I have been a supporter.

I have tremendous respect for all the long term MFC supporters who have not have Grand final success in 1964 but have remained loyal to the Club regardless. But every team has their day and how magical will it be when the MFC wins it's 13 Grand Final, it will be worth the wait. Also I have much more respect for any good football player who plays for a team that is not successful. Too oftain the media give too much regard to players who have won Grand Finals. But the simple fact is, if good players only wanted to play for successful teams then the same Clubs would always win.

I too will remain a supporter of the MFC regardless of the actions of the CEO, President, Board, Coaching Staff or Players.

So let the boys smash Collingwood on Monday!

Once a Demon always a Demon, we are on the dark side an can never return, but we can stuff em all up as we have done 12 times previously. Great to c some passionate support, I hope all Demon supporters are tough enough to stick it out, after all, why would you give up now after copping all the crap WE have dished up and copped from all and sundry for way to long. Still plenty of us in this dirty, filthy trench.

I have been on this Demon supporting journey for 50 year's. The bad times by far out weigh the good times on my watch, however the feeling I experienced in the 87 final series, 88 & 2000 preliminaries will always ensure I remain on this journey. I need to experiance that extra weeks victory in my lifetime. My passion & hope has only started to waiver in the last 18 months, however I know this is one train I will never get off. I went to the hawks match last week, with a mate (hawks supporter) who I hadn't gone to the footy with for 5 or so years.

He actually asked me what has happened to me as in his words "you've turned into a ferral dees supporter" - I was giving 9 mill dollar man Buddy crap all day and cheering for every one of our 5 goals that we kicked. Years ago I was nowhere near as passionate, and as you point out by this thread what an interesting side effect from these tribulations.

Yep, nobody supports this club because it was the easy option.

Supporter for supporter, Demons pack more punch, get to more games and take out more memberships than any other club.

Remember to stick that fact up anyone who questions our right to exist.
