Making it worse is that our team's weak and insipid performance is characterised by a weak and insipid clash uniform. To me it's akin to the royal blue we wore in the 70s and 80s - another era associated with a lack of success. Given that we must have a clash strip, I would love for the club to wipe the slate clean and come up with something that has far more presence. I note the Dogs are now wearing red, which we had been told wasn't an option when creating a clash strip of our own. Given that precedent, can we revise the option of simply reversing our traditional jumper?

I think the AFL has gone overboard with the clash strip anyway. It should only be used when two teams with similar colours play against each other. It should only be so that players and umpires don't get confused with the crush of bodies around a ball, who did what. When we play someone who has a completely different uniform, say Collingwood, we shouldn't be wearing it. The same goes for all the other teams. I like to see teams in their 'traditional' colours, not some silly thing they wear for every away game. Another stupid idea to chalk up to the AFL.

The AFL has ruled that red is a dark colour and white (obviously) is a light colour. The Bulldogs get to wear red because their clash (white) is against other light teams. Ours (navy blue) is a clash with other dark teams.

Until the AFL either abolishes aways strips or rules that red is a light colour, I'm afraid we'll be stuck without an all red-and-blue strip for the rest of eternity.

Get with the times. It makes the game much better ok tv and sells more jumpers. If we need a particular couloir to play well then we really are stuffed.

And then they let officials wear orange against GWS!

The Hawks wearing a clash strip against WCE is a recent case in point!

I mentioned on here the possibility of having a demon on our clash jersey instead of the red 'v' similar to the hawthorn clash jersey with the hawk.

What would people think of that?

did anyone see the VFL game on the weekend? Coburg played in their Navy blue (but so dark it looks black) with the red sash and the essendon vfl team wore their silver clash jumper with the red sash also. looked like a pre season game as they were both wearing the same jumper. can't believe the afl are still so soft they won't make essendon have a real clash strip, they probably wouldnt have cared though as its only the vfl.

Notwithstanding there are bigger footy issues to worry ourselves over, I could not agree more with this post. The club's jumper and colours are a massive part of the identity of our beloved "team of the red and the blue" and I can't stand seeing us wear anything different unless we absolutely have to due to a clash. I would imagine most supporters would feel the same about their own clubs too.

Like many things the AFL dropped the ball on this issue many years ago by firstly forcing clubs to come up with clash strips and forcing them to be worn even when no clash existed (becoming more like 'away' strips), and secondly by allowing the continued tinkering of other clubs' jumpers without regard for how those changes would affect potential clashes with fellow club's jumpers. Examples include the new Port Adelaide jumper (which has a huge clash with Carlton's jumper, albeit an improvement on the previous 'teal' jumper), and allowing the back of Collingwood'd jumper to be transformed from predominantly white with a black number, to predominantly black with a white number.

By my reckoning there are probably only about 4-6 genuine clashes in the whole league. In those situations it makes sense to have a clash jumper... in all other cases, it simply doesn't. And don't give me the argument about marketing and it allowing clubs to sell a more diverse range of jumpers... 'give us a spell' as Ox would say.

infact the only team you could argue red doesnt work for as an away jumper is essendon........and they are a disgusting club.

I don't really go for the current clash strip. I know Schwabby and his heritage mantra are gone, but I have to say I do like the thought of something like our heritage jumper but in reverse - red with navy strip down the front.

Would it have been too much to ask on the weekend to wear red socks against a team with only blue socks? Totally moronic. The redlegs are just as important as the traditional guernsey.

Lets say we HAVE to have a clash strip what would people like it to be? Give some suggestions and maybe we can put it forward to the club because I think most of us hate th current clash strip.

It's been mentioned 100's of times, the AFL do not accept red as a "light" colour.

Kick and scream all you like but current clash jumper is probably the best option we have.

How can it be the best option when many people have said to me "Why are the Demons wearing a Sydney jumper today?"
