What about Carrazzo? Just got passed over for the Captaincy after making the final two. Probably was only passed over due to not wanting to upset Murphy. Talks well, has a go and is a very hard worker on the track. Great shutdown guy, but can spray the ball a bit.

    Not a heap of talent in the right age bracket on the free agency list. Maybe Alan Toovey or see if we can revive Xavier Ellis might be the best of the bunch really.

    We need to follow Port (Monfries, Heath, Stephenson) and Richmond (of the Houli/Grigg/Maric days) and focus some cheap trades for players with talent not in the best 22.

    I'd look down the emergencies list each week and see if there is anyone who continues to bob up but clearly has talent.

    For example young West Coast ruck Scott Lycett might want to leave after not getting a game stuck behind Cox/NicNat/Sinclair.

    I don't like him as a player but Leroy Jetta might want to come across considering we have no star pressure small forwards.

    They aren't the best examples but you get the point.

    Midfield is our biggest point of need so I'd look into the clubs with the strongest midfields - Coll, Syd, Carl, Haw, Geel, West Coast and see if there is any talent for the picking.

    Of course GWS have too many young midfielders to fit into one side!

    We don't need anymore depth players or cheap trades, our whole team is that type, we need stars.

    I would love to get Mark Murphy or someone of his caliber/age but that will never happen.

    I think if we want a senior/experience player that can be a leader we might have to look to Geelong. They are coming to the end of a premiership window and would be willing to trade good players for draft picks (Bartel?) - Thats assuming we can't get the players in free agency.

    If we are going to have any chance in Free agency we will have to show a lot of improvement by years end. Otherwise we will struggle to get players.

    Young players. Byrnes and Rodan aren't young. Gillies and Sellar were scrap heap types. I maintain Sellar could make it as a defender if needed to.

    The only way we are getting stars is through the draft. Which we should do with our high picks. But for our 3rd/4th round picks there is value to be had.

    How does someone propose we get Jack Steven. St Kilda wouldn't be happy with just our second round pick and how much money do we offer him? St Kilda should come into money with their stars aging and Goddard gone. They should secure him easily.

    As for Carrazo I really don't think he wants the captaincy. He's got triplets at home. He doesn't want extra responsibility. Again he's the wrong age bracket.

    My reasoning with Carrazzo is that we need some bridge players with leadership who are still decent and who can set an example to the kids already here and those to come. We are about to lose more of our experienced guys rightly or wrongly at the end of the season so the age profile of our list is going to be totally out of whack. The guy just put his hand up to captain Carlton so he doesn't seem against the extra responsibility. A guy nearer the end of his career than the beginning with young triplets is probably not thst adverse to the extra coin. He will be leaving just as some of our youngsters will be wanting the big bucks. Unlikely to happen I know, as he was a Blue supporter as a kid as well, but I did put some thought into the idea lol.

    It's so painful that we've played 3 games and we are already talking about who we can draft.

    Imagine how great it would be to support one of the 14 clubs that are trying to play finals this year?

    Wing...last time I looked it was part of the midfield.

    Ever wonder why Milne struggles in big games, to easy to put him out of the game and he has nowhere else to go. As a mid/forward if he was developed that way he would be much more dangerous that's why Lyon gives Ballantine some up the ground time.

    'Stuie' you cantankerous bugger, I'm sure you know I mean dedicated small forward. To me they are a waste of space and thinking back on my post even Cyril plays mid. Milne has been the pick of the bunch over the last 10 years and he has had little to no influence in big games, you can't be a one trick pony.

    Give me Stevie J and Jimmy and I'll take em in a heartbeat, well rounded players who can and do play multiple positions and can go forward and kick goals. Jetta a speedy wingman who after his initial troubles kicking his first goal now is a consistent scorer from 50 mtrs.

    I'll take the goal kicking mids and you have Milne, Betts and Garlett. No thanks.

    Steve Johnson isn't small, Jimmy Bartel plays everywhere and Lewis Jetta is a Wingman.

    But if you keep disagreeing with everyone then eventually you will make your point,whatever that is.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?

The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
