Improvement from the rubbish served up last year shouldn't be too much to ask for.Another season of losing week after week and getting destroyed by the likes of The Bulldogs and Port Adelaide would just cripple the club. The queens birthday clash last year made for really tough viewing watching the old enemy put us out of the game in the first quarter and they spent the rest of that game toying with us like a cat toying with a mouse. We can't afford to have another season like the one we had to endure in 2012.I just want improvement and to see the team become more competitive. So i hope we regain some respectability this year and finish ahead of GWS The Suns The Doggies and Port Adelaide and it would be nice if we shock a big team as well. This year is all about regaining respectability and hopefully after Mark Neeld fixes the midfield we might be ready to go places in 2014.All i can do is trust in the man and his vision for this club.

Hahahahahaaaaa oh, stop it.

The number of times I've heard this nonsense...

While I would love to see us win a lot more games I am more interested in us getting our game plan right this year. We still need to cover basic stuff like tackling correctly, shepherding, kicking long, forward pressure, crumbing, clearances and building depth, because at the moment we all seem to be relying on Clark and Dawes to come in and save us, which hopefully will happen but if it doesnt where do we go?

Here here.

I could rats clacker about our ladder position this year as long as we are above 3 or 4 sides.

Its the method I want to see this year, & the willingness for the contest & to take No Prisoners. A Hard & Ruthless approach onfield is for me the critical element.

After receiving 'HeartBeat' and the season preview in yesterday's mail and reading it from cover to cover, I actually believe what Mark Neeld is saying that a lot of people (esp. Demonlanders) might get quite a surprise in relation to our improvement this year. I am feeling quite bullish about Round 1!

Talk is cheap CBdees

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

After just reading the Back Page of The HUN today i am extremely concerned about the Swans Salary Template. It is becoming clear that the AFL prefer the Premiership to leave Victoria each year.

If Vlad is correct in saying that all the clubs "signed off" on this deal 5 years ago then our CEO needs to let the membsrs have a full explanation. This coupled with GW$ & GC $un$ makes it almost fanciful the MFC can ever rise.

The Swans have 6 veterans on their list and this 9.8% living bonus.

Personally i am sick of all 18 Presidents agreeing bullshite.

I do not believe it.

I think we head into this season with a much better preparation than last year, there are also no huge expectations on the team (externally) Neeld and the coaching staff have had a season to trim players from our playing list. Get the players that remain and who have come in to play the style that is expected of them,

We won't be going into the season opener with any emotional hangover from Jim's funeral (Something I think took a toll on the whole club just prior to the season commencing in my eyes)

The tanking stuff has been resolved, and I feel that the club isolated this issue from effecting the playing group as well as you could expect.

I would love it if, for the first half of the season, we are not in the headlines nearly as much as we have been over the last couple of years. For that to be the case we should win a few, lose a few. be competitive without having any huge blow out results. If that occurs I think we will be heading in the right direction this year.

For me this year no expectations means no disappointment. It also means I should occasionally be pleasantly surprised too ! ^_^

With a decent run with injuries sneaking into the top 8 is a possibility.

I agree we will be a better side by the 2nd half of the year.

But we must pull out all stops to beat Port Adelaide in Round one. No "playing into position" or experimentation.

It looms to me as the most important game currently on our calendar.

The positives of winning the Port game on MCG will/would be massive. Internally and externally. The negatives equally so.

Just go hell for leather, coaches and players, I dont care if we get flogged by Essendon the following week if we win the 1st round.

I agree Franky and as i've posted elsewhere i get the impression the club do also

Why would the Club be happy with an Essendrug Flogging?

It is no wonder this club wallows in self pity with attitudes like this.

If the MFC get flogged by Essendrug i will be most pi$$ed off.

FFS. Read between the lines (or the actual lines) they are just saying that they feel a focus on winning Rd 1. A priority over and above the normal feeling of wanting to win every game.

Focus on Rounds 1-2. It equates to 8 points rather than 4 points and a flogging.

Read between whatever lines you want.

Greg Denham has already awarded us the Wooden Spoon.

Who would have thunk that???

The Ox said he was going to head but him. I would pay big bucks to see that!

yes that would be worth a few $100 :)

'WYL', it doesn't matter if they sign off or not these days. The power is with the commission to make decisions whether the clubs like it or not. Of course they would like the clubs to be on the same page but in the end the clubs have no power to overrule them. It's a little bit mischievous when the AFL say the clubs all agreed or signed off.

I'm actually over a lot of this - how many years have we heard about rebuilding, youth, getting games into the kids, new gameplan blah blah . We've been rebuilding for 5 years and last year was rock-bottom in my view - totally uncompetitive. We've watched Richmond, North & Brisbane all go past us from the same starting position. Time for some action, ownership and accountability. We are way too accepting of mediocrity. The first game against Port gives us a chance to start off with a win. No excuses.

I keep thinking about what Grimes, Jones and the rest of the LG (especially Mitch if he plays) will be saying pre bounce in the huddle Sunday week. After the hype and build up to last years loss to Brisbane and all of the emotion attached to it, I think the boys will be much more focussed and learned from that experience and, significantly hungrier for a win.

I would love to hear the address - reckon it'll be a bloody beauty by the Coach and the Captain.

Let's hope it translates into a victory.

Can't wait for the bounce!

The trouble with our football scribes is that they never get it wrong. We could finish 10th and you wouldn't get a peep out of Denham. The good thing, however, is that he is largely irrelevant in the scheme of things. He's been doing his schtick for a long time but, for mine, still relatively unknown given time in the caper. That may say something. Stick it right up em Dees.

I'd rather have the low expectations on us, so all we can do now is impress with whatever we can put together this year and the next.

2013 is by far not our year and the club, coaches and training staff have already told members this.

Neeld pretty much had to start all over again from where Bailey left off. So unfortunately it's going to be a long road ahead, but I certainly feel much more comfortable with Neeld getting the job done. He's already put things in place I've been dying to see for over 6 years now.

List change being one of many others.

Stuff low expectations! That's half the problem. ....the other half being we're not very good.

Yes you are right, I know the newspaper just feed us a generic "Happy" Answer.

But for the $$$ we invest i think we all deserve better.....Victorian football has been raped unless you follow The Filth Hand Bags or the Whoreks...

It puts me in a mean mood!!

True we have been rebuilding over the last 5 years but unfortunately Mark Neeld has to start another rebuild and he had to teach the squad a whole new gameplan as well as getting the fitness of the players in order last year. That say's a lot doesn't it about the mess Dean Bailey left behind him.Another season like last year would be unacceptable imo and i expect the team to show a bit more backbone this year.Yeah i agree it is tough watching the Kangas, the Tigers and the Lions race ahead of us but i think all those clubs had squads that were better and stronger than ours.

Why would the Club be happy with an Essendrug Flogging?

I want us to destroy both Port Adelaide and Essendon. In fact i want us to win every game we play.Winning round 1 is important but we have to build on it as well and besides you can never beat Essendon often enough.Losing to them (nevermind getting flogged by them) is never acceptable!

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
