Pretty simple process though isn't it? There is a lot more responsibility and requirement playing off half back. After all your talk about Watts needing a real mean streak it doesn't sound like you enjoy the physical side of footy much.

You're on your own thinking it's easier to play forward pocket than on the half back line. Let's just leave it at that.

On the two or three occasions a game you get delivered a pass lace out or receive a crumb directly at the feet of the full forward, sure it's a walk in the park.

For the other 98 minutes it's a taxing, spirit sapping struggle to lead, present, double back, get crunched, get up, tackle and harrass over and over again with about the only reward a punch in the back of the head or a nasty back pocket's stops being raked against your heels.

Yep, real easy.

all you need to do is look at the paper tomorrow morning and look at all the forward pockets and see how many have made this easy position their own -Milne ? Ballantyne ?

On a Thursday night I go to bed and dream about playing every position of every Melbourne footballer against quality opposition. Alas by the end of the weekend the Thursday night dreams bear no resemblance to reality.(I will say my dreams are crying out for a decent forward pocket)

Well I have never played AFL footy and it is clearly a different game to club level. But these days at the top level you very rarely get coaches playing someone in a permanent pocket role because of the need for so many midfield rotations, so it isn't really a true indicator.

Correct. Milne, Betts, Ballantyne and Rioli (although he plays a broader role than the others) are the only players you could say have 'made it' as permanent small forwards.

What position is easier?

For some teams sure, but my point (that you missed or decided to not address) was that for Melbourne that is NOT an easy position, especially given we're the 3rd worst team in the AFL for defensive inside 50s.

Plenty of footy down there.

What position is easier in the current Melbourne side? When you are getting pummelled and the ball never comes forward - being a forward is tougher with less exposure to the sherrin.

HBF is always easier.

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze.     With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals.
