Bartram: Supersize me !

Featured Replies

One of the more bizarre treatments I have read. In order for Clint Bartram to continue his footy career he has had to gain weight (~9Kg) with supersize meals for a procedure which includes liposuction in order to generate tissue for cartilage with a series of injections over the next several weeks.

I wish him well in this treatment. He hopes to commence full training in the new year.

I also wish him luck, as if the treatment fails, his AFL career is probably over. He is a nice guy who gives his all.

While I will sound like a selfish [censored], what do we do with Clint's contract? Do we ask if he would be willing to accept a demotion to the Rookie List, with assurance that if he fully recovers, he is promoted as soon as possible?

Of course I wish Clint the best for his surgery, and for his general quality of life after football, whenever that may be.

Can you just "demote" someone to the rookie list? Presumably it means delisting him and re-drafting him on to the rookie list, which also presumably means going through all the drafts in the process. I don't know that there's a massive risk in someone else pinching him, nonetheless putting him through the drafts doesn't seem to me to send a good message to the player.

I guess another option is to just wait and see - how good an idea will we have on the success of the surgery by the last list lodgement in October?

With all that said, I think the most sensible and logical answer is a one year contract.

That sounds just bizarre - no way even Phil $ would fit 9 kgm of fat into one knee......well, maybe. Perhaps he has and nobody noticed.

On a serious note, he will be pushing to have his surgery and the outcome predicted before list time. Can we afford to gamble with him, especially as Mitch Clark must also be rated as uncertain?

I wish him well.

If it meant getting no contract compared to getting a rookie contract, I'm quite sure Barty would be willing to go to whatever extremes he needs to to remain on our list in some fashion in 2013.

But, perhaps a 1 year deal at a very reduced rate with bonus payments made per amount of games played might be the best. If it turns out he can't get back, then we can place him on the LTI list and upgrade a rookie when required.

No, you can't... what you've said is correct. But i seriously doubt another club would pinch a bloke who may never play another game.

The obvious thing is to tell him to retire and talk to us when he is ready to play again ,if ever .

Good enough player but do we really have to keep him on the list at all?

Not sure but I think there is a bit of a handshake type agreement with rival clubs that means injured or ill players who are to be placed on a rookie list spot won't be picked up by opposition clubs in the drafting process, especially given no one wants to be lumped with all the medical bills for said player who may or may not make it back. Dates back to Ramanauskis (?spelling) going through his cancer ordeal. If it is made public that that's what we are going to do, it will happen.

Hopefully he overcomes it, not just for his footy career but to have a healthy knee for the remainder of his days

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
