Why ?

If I must explain (this is Melbourne forum right?) Neitz was a 300 game player and the longest leader at the MFC. He could win a game of his own boot (unlike Maxwell), and he was aggressive while maintaining discipline (unlike Hall).

He lead from the front which is exactly what our club has always and continues to need.

Wonder what big Jolly things right now with the Pies being sticked in the middle against North? Pity about Swanny isn't it?

What you've listed doesn't make him a better "leader". In reality you don't know.

Actually BH for me it does make him a better leader. Runs on the board mean you can turn around and ask hard questions of your team mates when they need to be asked. I doubt Barry Hall can do that given his history (and I like Hall but if he questioned me on discipline there would be a little nagging voice in the back of my head).

Too often we mistake big words and big gestures behind closed doors for leadership when the fact of the matter is that football is a game played for 2 hours a week and it's during that time that players get to show their best.

He was a good captain but hardly a great captain. He lead by actions yes, but I don't know if he had the insatiable hunger & drive of someone like a Ron Barassi or Brett Kirk who demanded players met a minimum standard or they were letting their mates & coach down.

I'm yet to see any captain of the club over the last 10 years demand these sort of standards. At least Grimes & Trengove will carry out their coaches instructions. Hopefully with time these two will become more demanding leaders in terms of installing a hatred of losing. Trengove already leads the club in terms of all performance indicators so he is leading by setting the example, whether or not he can grow into a demanding leader on field is yet to be seen. Still early days.

Having the credentials to support your stance as a good leader isn't the same as being a good leader.

You don't seem to grasp the subtle difference though.

How would you know??

By all reports Junior was exemplary on field and off field. Well regarded Captain although my reading of it would be not in the league of Kirk.
