On the Couch - Brock talks about 'tanking'

Featured Replies

I honestly cannot believe this is even a story.

I can.

But you know my opinion of footy journalism...

I agree with whichever one of you said this was the AFL's plan to deflect attention away from the Olympics and back onto their own little backyard.

Perhaps I should've elaborated:

I honestly cannot believe this is a story...that people have bought so much into.

But then again...

I agree with whichever one of you said this was the AFL's plan to deflect attention away from the Olympics and back onto their own little backyard.

If true ,this is what has always [censored] me about Sheahan and Caro's jounalism.

Instead of actually talking about the game they have always gone muck raking for their headlines.

If nothing else by the time the (bull) dust settles on all this we'll know who are our friends and who are our foes. A few surprises already.

So now, it is widely disseminated that we apparently tanked against St Kilda in r22 of 2009. Sure - the bottom side deliberately losing against a team that won the first 19 games, on its way to the GF. And Mr "Leisure" Lane on 3AW is now telling us that we did the same against Carlton in late 2009 - they led at every change and won by about 10 goals!

Sheesh...

The fact that Ratten has stated he's been investigated twice for tanking (and cleared) and we've even had Vlad say on numerous occasions that "tanking doesn't exist" (despite investigating Ratten twice  ), plus any gambling ramifications from suspect games, I think it's safe to say that this will blow over quite quickly.

blow over .....yes.

Quickly...maybe not.

Whens Vlad back ?... might be over then though

well.. in all fairness. That was a funny game. We were leading at qtr time. But hey LJ did need the rest ....and the half time all change ends message must have been missed by the many ...and ...and... we lost.

Anderson has the same driver to make it go away as Vlad.

Vlads the boss...he'll want it gone before he graces or shores once more

Why isn't it over already? All Vlad needed to text was "bury it" to Ando and that would've been that.

But he didn't.

BM left, do we really know if his leaving was as he says and that he is not carrying any sort of grudge, the 10k alone is probably enough?

Tanking, most likely, but hard to prove especially when you lose one game with a kick after the siren and the other by 40 odd points. It's actually AFL culture to tank for draft picks, its been done for as long as i can remember.

Some of the positional changes were strange, but two that are always questioned really sh!t me; Miller in to the ruck, our ruckman was injured and Miller had rucked in many other games without comment from the media; and Junior to back pocket, he made his name as a back pocketer/tagger and you could quite easily argue he was sent down there to help and lead our defence.

Also Frawley to fullforward annoys me a little as a lot of radio commentators (especially his uncle) had been saying all that year that he should be tried in the forward line and when he is, its tanking!

He is in a fashion. Hes asking people some inane questions which will come to nought. Its the media riding this donkey.

I'm tired of you trotting out 186 every second post.

Time to give yourself a slap.

But 186 is pivotal in all this

havent read 17 pages but here is my from left field take, someone/something is trying to get us out of the running to get a player who is a restricted free agent

It appears that our former President Gardner has said he had to leave a game in 2008 because he couldn't stand to watch us tanking. It's on the AFL website, just wonderful.

Robbie lets just be glad this will finally be addressed. Get it all out. Yes it may hurt, but it is the only way we can move forward.

What get out "we tanked", if we did and get another penalty that may be the death knell of the club? Sounds good to me when can we start.

How can you say this WYL given the penalties we may face?

Are you satisfied that only our club will be investigated?

Which game did we tank in '08?

I loved this from Lynch on Insider, to Dermie, who said GWS will lose every game for the rest of the year because they want the number 1 pick and will rest players and change their positions, Lynch then said that is ok as that is development, not tanking. He said that when we did it, that was tanking. This is the same bloke who said Melbourne fans should be optimistic on T$ staying when as his manager knew he was going. How does he face himself in the mirror.

I'd like to be sitting in the room when the following accusation is made.

Did you deliberately move Matthew Warnock to Full Forward and Paul Johnson to Full Back with the intention of losing the game?.

Open and shut case except for the fact you could build a wall, similar to the Great Wall of China made up of Warnock and Johnson look a likes and we'd still lose.

Has anyone here actually listened to the Gardner interview readily accessible on the SEN website and app?

Too much red cordial consumed from you thunderingly indignant numpties.

He doesn't mention Craig Cameron once.

He says not once but twice that his tanking observations were based on his presence as a spectator ie after he stepped down as Chairman.

He praises McLardy.

I defy anyone who actually listens to the interview to be offended by it. Disagree at some things maybe. Offended - petal!

Disagree. I was offended by it, as were most Dees fans I spoke to today.

You are correct in what you say he said. However, as a former President he should not say anything that is critical of the club publicly, especially when those comments may lead to a sanction against the club. If I was him I would have said "no comment" or something like " of course they weren't tanking, they were looking at development of the list just as every other club does when you are not playing finals".

If you love the club, you don't sh-t on it and he did. I am also a former official of the club and I would never, ever have done what he did. Privately yes, publicly no. He could have said nothing at all.

He could have said nothing at all.

Should have. Absolute disgrace it was.

Deserves an earful for it from supporters if ever seen at the footy.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
