You can, & we have, as most clubs have, played 1 Ruck on Many occasions

Yeah, and how did that go on Saturday mate?

Actually, we nearly Won. But losing 2 players before halftime doesn't help running out the game, does it? Just as 2 rucks doesn't help running out the game.

What? Did you watch the game? It was 100% CLEAR that having 1 worn out ruckman and no big forward target after Jamar was out LOST us the game!

No, I've had the flu bad, & hadn't realised it was televised until late in the game. i missed both VFL & our game. Too much going on plus the Flu to be ontop of things. Just broke it's back & starting to recover since yesterday morning. So tomorrow should be good.

So yes I'd agree, that not having the tall forward or tall back to give Martin a rest would hurt.

But in Darwin, having the extra Tall is a Hindrance, as it too hard to Mark, or even handle the ball cleanly. Lots of Fumbling etc.

In Darwin you need 1 & a Half Rucks.

IMO Spencer &/or Fitzy playing in Darwins Heat & Humdity, would not do they're reputations or confidence any good. Spence is only 3 games back from a 12 month injury, so I suspect he'll be low on 'Tank' & on 'legs'.

Sellar isn't the answer unless Port go in Way too tall.

We need 1/2 a Ruckman to help Steph.

Basically in the Freo game, Martin was playing Clark's role, and started really well kicking 2 goals in the first quarter, but once Jamar went down it all went pear shaped.

So we play Spencer (who was great last week) as Jamar, and Martin as Clark. Don't think we wouldn't play Jamar and Clark if available so it's no different height and setup wise.

We can't afford to have any of Dunn, Sylvia, Rivers (who tried to ruck on Saturday) etc backing up the ruck cos we'll get smashed and won't be able to win the ball.

It can't work in the slippery conditions & stifling Humidity/Heat. Our runners, will run out of Legs.

# Unless we had a Tall forward, who couldn't be stopped 'Marking the ball & kicking Goals' in the humidity, it couldn't work.

Do you think Spencer is going to get MORE tired than Sylvia or Dunn trying to ruck?!

I completely agree stuie. Losing Jamar not only wore Martin in to the ground but it stuffed our forward structure. We can't afford to go in to this game with a half-arsed ruck structure.

As you said - Spencer should play the Jamar role and Martin to play the Clark role. It's not exactly ideal, but it's the best we can muster at the moment. Going in with only one ruck is a crazy idea.

Doing a 'Col Sylvia' there Nash.

I think he was o.k on the weekend but he has been running so slow this year and is so important going forward that i just think if any game we should rest him it's the Darwin game. The kid has had a tuff year and really needs to be looked after Just IMO

If there is ANY risk of aggravating an injury then FCS....rest him.

He will be desperately needed next season - this season is shot.

Memo Neeld: we don't need to see him injured yet run into the ground in a meaningless end of season like Jeff White was by ND. That was disgraceful.

...or Fitz to play the forward role with ruck relief. Spencer may have done well last week but is one dimensional...Fitz has more strings in his bow, and also apparently did well last week. Edited by monoccular

Yeah can't really seperate them, but just giving the edge to Spencer as he's more the "pure" ruckman of the two (seeing Martin will go forward after a great start on Saturday), he did improve in the two games he played a couple of weeks ago, and he was the better of the two last week.

But I'd be just as happy if it was Fitzy.

Yes.

* And as I was alluding to with our illustrious leader, & as you've touched on, Sylvia, when we have the smaller Ruck, goes up 3rd man over the top. As he has done before when we have played with 1 Ruck.

This gives us more agility around the ball, more run & more speed.

No no no. It gives us an exhausted midfielder with a good chance of injury losing EVERY ruck contest, rather than a tired ruckman giving us some ball use.

Well we've dunn it before many times, & it didn't cause injuries. The only one who hurt someone as I recall, was when I think Howe did it, & got one of ours. I can't believe you can't remember us using this strategy. We've done it so many times.

Not by choice,

And I personally guarantee you we will have two ruckman selected on Thursday, most likely Martin and Spencer.

I'm not always right, would never say that unlike some other posters here, but I'll bet you a footy pie we'll name two talls.

Yes we did by choice.

You've forgotten when the Russian would ruck on his own, with minor cameo support?

And your personal guarantee as well, go for your life. It's not how I would select the side in those conditions.

So if the selection committee pick 2 ruckmen they're wrong and you're right?

No, it's not how I would do it.

You can go many ways, to get the balance you want.

It's the conditions that need the most respect up there. Being able to run out the game. Survival in that soup is the key.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
