GWS (U-17's) Mini Draft

Yep lets not force the price up in an auction for 1st mini prize.

wait for 2nd could be an option depending on price/value as this years draftees aren't too shabby.

Picks 3 & 4 on ready to go kids would be nice, & If we could jag a mini pick with (P13 + a player), Could be, even better? Hmmn, a hogan? or a stringer???

I've wanted Melbourne to use either pick 3 or 4 to bid in the mini-draft with the idea of getting Hogan for a couple of months now, but I'm resigned to the fact that we'll have to use 3 on Viney. And in that event I suspect we'll forego the mini-draft bidding process. That would disappoint me, but I'd live with it.

I can't live with not getting Viney.

Yeah I agree Ben-Hur. I read it someone (can't recall sorry) but Melb. has stated they want at least 1 live pick (3 or 4) in the draft. So if they nominate for Viney pick 4 wont be sold off for the mini-draft or traded. As I've also stated else where we can obtain Hogan with the MD pick 2. The Dogs and a few other clubs have stated and shown they are really keen on Jack Martin, especially after his stella performances at the draft combine, he will more than likely go with the first pick.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but does anyone know how the bidding for these picks works?

Do we know what we have to beat for MD#1, is the bidding an open process is what I'm getting at

Yes, it's basically completely open.

GWS holds the mini-draft picks in their hands and can trade them for whatever they wish. If they don't get traded, their wasted basically.

i am sure we will find out more after the F and S tomorrow sorry later today

So if we can't get MD1, we can just walk away?

If we did a deal with GWS for MD2 for ND3 and GC force us to take Viney at 3 we could still honour the deal with GWS by trading pick 4 - it's not their fault GC bid.

The Suns and Giants have also exchanged compensations picks, that will see the Suns gain a compensation pick that can be used through until the 2015 draft

Gold Coast secure MD pick 1 trading ND pick 2 to GWS. Will select Jack Martin

Grundy will go at pick #2

Could be Toumpas in the bag...that's a good outcome for us.

Jungle Dee won't be so happy though :(

I expect:

- ND3 to GWS for MD2 (Hogan).

- ND4 to GC for Caddy + pick (but they'll have to convince Caddy to come to us)

or similar

Looks like we are about to trade pick 3 for Hogan

EQ tweeting that pick 3 to GWS for MD pick 2 is being discussed. Would suggest that this deal was discussed a while ago. Only reason pick 3 would be on the table instead of pick 4.

Purely speculating but perhaps we are putting up pick 3 for MD 2 or it will go to the dogs in exchange for 5 & 6?

Yeah the only reason I could see us giving pick 3 instead of 4 - GWS would rather pick 3 than picks 5 & 6 but would probably rather take picks 5 & 6 than pick 4. If we can get Hogan though I don't care - another midfielder with picks 4 & 13 (possibly Caddy) I think will do well to settle our forward line and add midfield class and depth. The only way we could **** this up is if we did something stupid like trade pick 4 for Dawes & Wellingham.

EDIT: Getting Hogan or Dawes you would think would see us trying to offload Cook to someone as well - don't know what we'd get for him, a 3rd round pick?

Pick 3 for Mini draft pick #2 plus a player or 2nd round pick?

Michael Gleeson reports that Melbourne has traded its pick three to GWS for WA pre-listed key position star Jesse Hogan. Neither Martin or Hogan will be able to play in 2013, as they are too young, but both are extremely highly-rated. This morning's dealings leave GWS with picks 1,2 and 3 in November's national draft.

now changed too

We dont need 17 year olds. We need players who can play now.

Yeah the only reason I could see us giving pick 3 instead of 4 -

The most likley reason is we've done a deal with GWS ...

If we can use pick 3 to secure Hogan and GWS 2nd rounder (pick 20)

Then go on to use pick 20 for Dawes

We will end up with Dawes, Hogan, Viney, Pick 4 and Pick 13.

Awesome outcome

That's smart, MD pick 2 would cost us more than MD1 sold for. Don't think so.

Dont forget free agency compo

We also need a second KPF and we have just locked one in for the next 10 years.

Bigger picture stuff!

Gaining this kid from GWS as bit part of a pick 3 for MD 2 is also a possibility i would think?

GWS - NT Zone:

Jed Anderson (NT – Mid/Util)

Height: 178cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 16/02/1994

Recruited from: Darwin

Style:

Player comparison: Toby Greene

Range: 10-35 (GWS can sign through zone selection – likely)

Profile: Anderson is a really high level contested ball winner. Absolute bull with his attack on the ball. During the 2011 U18 Champs was the best from NT and really displayed his talent as a bottom age player and backed it up with another standout effort in 2012. Has some versatility to play through the midfield, up forward or down back. Skill level very good and decision making in congestion in particular stands out. Quickness is above average but what athletically stands out with Anderson is his evasiveness and side step which has impressed. Also like his strong marking ability forward of centre which has impressed with his nice leap and ability to mark the ball in the air, 1v1 and also take a strong contested grab which at his size is impressive. Looks likely to go to GWS through a Zone Selection you’d think.

Thanks Knightmare for the write up

went at pick 20 in the BF mock

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
