GWS (U-17's) Mini Draft

Featured Replies

Pick 3 - Brodie Grundy

Pick 4 & Jamar - Jack Martin (Shoot me for putting Jamar up!)

Pick 13 - Pacey midfielder/small forward

or Trade Pick 13, our 3rd rounder & Ricky Petterd or Cale Morton for Josh Caddy & Maverick Weller

Pick 21 - Jack Viney

Gone - Moloney, Bate, Green, Morton

Jamar signed a new deal with us. I get you like Grundy and I like Hogan and want him to be a dee but I wouldn't trade away our only proven ruckman for him.

Not if GC bid we dont

thanks Einstein

Too many if's and maybe's there Ben, as I say I would be happy with Viney and Toumpas anything else is a bonus and subject to a blind eye from the AFL.

You probably reckoned Mitch Clark looked good in purple too.

Not sure what that's got to do with Toumpas and Viney?

Look, it won't happen, but really ? Jamar is 30 next year and has had two good years in his career. I'd drive him to the airport if it meant getting Hogan.

It was implausible to get Clark.

It may seem implausible to Viney into the second round through deals or the off-set of desired deals (ie. being involved in the MD) but it's not only possible but highly logical and very lucrative.

I like the thought of "under promising and over delivering" RP. The whole idea being pushed that we will be big players this trade period, I'm not so sure we will and what on here seems an expectation that we will get Viney 2nd round sets us up for a big fall and a lot of disgruntled supporters.

Picking up players like Viney and Toumpas will well and truly compensate us for the loss of Scully and set us up well, anything more I see as a bonus. I will be absolutely over the moon if it happens, Viney 2nd round that is and I'm sure the FD is pushing all angles to make it happen. Lets hope that like with Clark they have a few tricks in the bag.

Fine - you manage the expectations and I'll take action - situation normal for me ...

Good to know you are in the football department, will Gys or Fitz get a call up this week?

Stef martin, cook and pick #13 to bulldogs (need tall fwd's) for pick #6

Pick 3 toumpas

pick 4 md hogan

pick 6 kennedy

And when I say class, he has the type of class presently lacking from our list.

With the obvious exception of the classiest player on our list, the fella you think has about 20 odd players in front of him from his draft year (few of whom could hold a candle to Watts in terms of class, poise and skill)

Class is useless if you're scared to use it.

I'd pay the petrol and the tolls.

hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard...maybe should've put that in the gysberts or sylvia threads

Class is useless if you're scared to use it.

How would i know he had it if i hadn't seen him use it?

How would i know he had it if i hadn't seen him use it?

There's class and then there's class in a pressure situation. It's why some player look a million dollars at training, but go to water at AFL level. Watts suffers a little from this. We all know he can do some sublime thins. We all know he has talent. Some of us know he's soft.

Stick to the Watts thread.

Just a quick question to see if anyone could shed some light on how the mini draft works and if this could play a role in The demons snaring Viney without having to use Pick 3 on Viney?

Didn't want to create another Viney Thread as I also am unaware of how the mini draft really works.

The mini draft cant enable us to get Viney at pick 26.

With the mini draft it is still counted as using your first round pick on a player.

Example:

we have pick 3 and go for Martin.

GC nominates Viney pick 2.

We lose Viney, because we used pick 3 on Martin

No that is completely and utterly incorrect. It goes like this;

GC nominate Viney

We take him with pick 3

F/S nominations close

Trade week begins

We offer pick 4 for mini draft pick to GWS

The two have nothing to do with each other.

I've wanted Melbourne to use either pick 3 or 4 to bid in the mini-draft with the idea of getting Hogan for a couple of months now, but I'm resigned to the fact that we'll have to use 3 on Viney. And in that event I suspect we'll forego the mini-draft bidding process. That would disappoint me, but I'd live with it.

I can't live with not getting Viney.

I don't think our involvement in the mini-draft is dependant on the Viney situation. The potential Dawes deal plays a signifcant role.

If we can't reach an agreeable trade for Dawes then Hogan enters the picture again. If Toumpas is gone by pick 4 and O'Rourke, Mayes, Wines et al are our options - with Viney already locked away - I think the power forward has the whip hand.

We have to trade for the mini draft pick before the national draft, so we won't know who is left at pick 4 when we make the decision.

Right. I've jumped the gun a bit. Regardless, Toumpas is likely to go at pick 2 behind Whitfield anyway. That is an increasingly likely outcome.

That would happen if GC retain the pick at draft time. Though there is speculation they are interested in MD pick 1 for Martin. Dogs rumoured to be prepared to offer 5 & 6 for MD 1. Suggestion that we could then swap 3 to GWS for 5 & 6 if Viney was ok for second round. GWS probably would want Grundy. We would lose Toumpas but could get MD pick 2 Hogan for 4 and have 5 & 6 for say Stringer and Kennedy and still have 13.

We will have to see it play out.

It would be more wise that the MFC chase the MD pick 2 at a cheaper price to get Hogan. The W.B and a few other clubs have stated they are highly interested in Jack Martin, particularily after his stella performance at the draft combine. I say let the Dogs get the first selection with their 6th NAB draft pick, then we could use our 13th or players for the second MD pick for Hogan. Use pick 4 for Toumpas/Wines/O'Rourke/Grundy.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
