Lucas Cook & a fit Gysberts, Taggert, Viney, #4, #12.

This post is exactly what I'm saying. For our midfield, we are relying on Gysberts making it, Taggert (a pick 36), Viney and to unknown players (assumingly you want midfielders) to be part of the core of our premiership midfield.

Cook, too, is an unknown quality, however, as a 2nd tall forward, and the fact that he is being developed "the right way", I think is less risk, especially given that Martin can play that role.

That could mean I'm happy to trade pick 12 for Boak - at least we know what we are getting.

Our midfield needs a number of classy players, our 2nd tall forward doesn't need to be that classy.

Cloke.

I know we need a midfield to get it down there, but I have not forgotten how talented Gysberts is, and Blease has all the potential in the world.

Also midfielders can bolt from nowhere, one can suddenly develop into a gun, or you could pick up a Michael Barlow. I rate Boak, but I don't think his standard is that high to reach.

It'd be effin hard to stop Cloke and Clark on a nice september afternoon. mmmmm

Gysberts has shown tremendous ability in his brief career, Taggert is an unknown and pick 36, however reports are he's a good ball user and hard at the contest, Viney we've all seen / heard / read about etc

Additionally, we have classy players in the midfield as it is right now, re just need a run at them being injury free

Blease has pace and skill, needs game time before he can adequately rotate through midfield, Trengove is better than he's currently playing, Jones is shouldering a big load, and will be better for more support, Grimes has shown in glimpses how damaging he could be in the midfield, Tappy could have a run through there, Sylvia (whilst a better forward IMO) can have a run through there, add 2 pacy ball users with pick 4 and 12 from the "super draft" and suddenly the midfield doesn't look too bad

If Port said they'd take pick 12 for Boak, sign me up, but there is no way they would bite at that

Free agency may be able to bring us a couple of solid mids struggling to get a run in good teams (a la Koby Stevens WCE)

A genuine, proven monster forward in Cloke is as rare as hens teeth, and he's about to enter his prime

@RalphyHeraldSun: Four year deal for Cloke would be fair enough as reports say deal is imminent. David Cloke knows Collingwood where his son maximizes talent

I thought this discussion was going to be moot.

But, if you lined Cloke and Boak up against a wall and gave 18 clubs first crack at choosing one I doubt there'd be a club that chose Boak.

Cloke would cost us only the money to pay hm - we wouldn't need to trade any of this.

?? Did I miss something?

Cloke is a free agent.

We'd only need the funds to pay his contract, we wouldn't have to give up anything more.

He's not talking about trading them he's is saying that is where the development IHO will come from

Sorry mate I should of explained better.

The title was Cloke or Boak to which I mentioned the above players as to my preference instead of paying big bucks for Cloke or Boak. I think we'll be right.

Cloke, every day of the week. If Boak was Judd, then I'd be going that option. But a forwardline of Cloke and Clark would be seriously dangerous. Add in a fit LJ (if he ever plays again), Howe and two quick crumbers and you'd have a top forwardline.

So short answer - get Cloke, draft young talented mids.

I hope my concerns about Gysberts are totally off the mark.

In regards to that last sentence, at what stage does Mitch Clark fall under the category of genuine, proven monster forward? Do we need 2 of that mould? Does the 2nd tall need to be a genuine, proven star, especially if Mitch is just that? Can that role of 2nd forward not be filled by Martin, or perhaps Jamar should Gawn come on and can handle the 1st ruck role, or even Watts or Cook?

As Ben Hur said in a different thread, midfields win you games. But to win a Grand Final, you need a lot of ingredients. 2 tall forwards is important, it's an ingredient that can't be left out. But if we've got one that can perform (Mitch), then the 2nd part of that ingredient is not as important. The ingredient known as the backline is there already. We need a quality midfield, which Boak would add to.

But we can keep all of that AND get Cloke.

Surely that's even better.

Boak probably not.

Ok. Here goes. This is what Im saying.

1. I know Cloke is a free agent and I wasnt wanting to trade any of those players for him. I have faith in those players' development.

2. I don't really want Cloke as I think Clark can definetley fill this role. Question was Cloke or Boak - I said Lucas Cook (I still reckon he will be very good)

3. I don't think Cloke is worth the ridiculous money, I'd rather hang onto it for a star later on when or if we challenge Preferably a star mid.

4. Cloke would most likely look silly with our delivery to him!

5. I think we would be better at seeing what we have spent our money and development on before a big decision like this ie; Cook, Watts, Sheahan, Davis, McDonald, Fitzpatrick, Martin, maybe even Garland or who knows Leigh Williams....Not forgetting that we may not be challenging for another 2 years...if that was the case Id rather spend the money on a homesick Patton or Cameron maybe?

By all means if you think we need Cloke straight away and want to throw money at him thats cool, but I wouldnt. Id rather see a Patton or Cameron when we are about to launch an assault :)

If Misson can get Gys & Taggert (who looks real good) out of the sick bay, we will have a much stronger midfield...and....

As for Viney and say #4, #12.... I think we will get it right this time, I'm excited.

We'll get it right this time cos there's so many good prospects it's almost impossible to get it wrong..?

(MFCSS warning)

We'll probably end up with Dal Santo & Sewell when we could've had Judd & Bartel.

Any of you seen Cook? He is at least 2 or 3 years away from playing a senior role

We need classy midfielders and please please a small forward to kick goals

Good teams have them and they make the difference in todays fast game

We havent had one since Farmer please we need one now

Jarrah cant play that role and we dont have 2 small crumbers in fact we never have anyone who stays down and crumbs its a huge problem with the forward line

Can someone tell me why we should pay over the odds for Boak?

I must confess that I haven't seen a lot of him or taken notice but what does he have that differentiates him and what are his skills?

Having a look at his stats they don't seem overly impressive but perhaps there's more to him than that.

Silly comment. Yes I have and I like what I see. Hes more of a natural forward than Watts and loves an overhead mark. He will be playing at the top level some time next year, no questions there.

I did have a chuckle. Surely we cant stuff it up this time!!! I will go and hide for the rest of my life otherwise!

Who would you pick up at #4 Jose???

That's the point. This is a hypothetical trade scenario. We need small crumbers, because we don't have them. Meanwhile, Jurrah can't play which role? I'm saying he could be that little bit of X-factor in the forwardline.

? How are we paying over the odds for Boak?

Is paying a lazy $1M +,,, a year for 5 or so years for a tall forward Over the Odds?

Well that didn't help me much, you answer my question with a question, well done.

My question, in case you didn't understand it, was, is he worth paying a lot of money for, what does he have that makes him worth trading a good draft pick for?

Does that help, do you have an answer or just more questions?

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
