6/ Jack Watts - And he's looking even better now that players are learning to spread and provide a target. By hand or foot, no-one else in the team matches him.

5/ Jared Rivers - How many times as he been written off and then confounded the critics?

4/ Dan Nicholson - His solid pre-season paying off in that he was still running strongly in the 4th.

3/ Mark Jamar - Rucked strongly (no surprise) but also started to impose himself in open play.

2/ Nathan Jones - Just keeps on doing it!

1/ James Sellar - Showed that he definitely has something to offer. Will be interesting to see if he can deliver again on Monday if he's picked.

you should get a job in the footy media, where if you are in front on the scoreboard then everything is awesome and everyone's a gun. Had we lost by 100 last night as expected, JT would be copping it for that match (which is about 10 in a row now). He's a captain, he's a pick 2, he hits 50 games in 3 weeks time. He shouldn't be getting run down with the ball and turning it over with his disposal as much as he is, simple as that. It's not all about effort, obviously. Jones, Magner, Watts etc put in the effort but they actually performed, and thats why we won. Win, lose or draw every performance should be judged on its merits and we will go nowhere as a club if we think ones like that are acceptable - especially from somebody we are expecting to lead us to a flag.

So let me get this straight, if we had lost by 100 points last night and Trengrove had played like that I would have criticized him. Interesting way of thinking after a fantastic win. Actually, i have a winning TAB ticket for last night so I wasn't expecting an 100 points. Happy to send you a copy of the ticket if you like. My response was actually to your abysmal comment. Get a dictionary and a mirror.

I'm trying to fathom what was "abysmal" about C&B's comment... are you saying that a player who plays a very ordinary game in a winning team is somehow immune from criticism? I would say THAT is the "interesting way of thinking". And I'm not sure what the winning ticket has to do with anything. For what it's worth, I agree with C&B and was sitting watching the game thinking how slow Trengove has become.

see NH this is what logical, realistic people speak like on this forum. Not really a place for cheerleaders with blinkers on, who slam others for saying things that might make them a little uncomfortable. I used to bag Watts plenty too, but guess what? He is now performing to a level where he deserves his credit. Some others - the likes of Brad Miller and Matthew Bate and a billion others won't ever get to that respectable level - and the likes of Trengove need to earn their praise.

Yeah well, two wrongs don't make a right. You can start by reading his comments. He called Trengroves game abysmal. The ticket comment was in response to his brilliant hypothesis that I would have judged Trengroves game differently if we had lost by 100 points as expected. As it happened I didn't think we would lose, let alone by 100 points, hence the TAB ticket. As for Trengrove becoming slow, let's wait and see.

I meant to say that I thought Dan Nicholson's performance was very reminiscent of Aaron Davey's early days. Davey could put the foot down whether defending or attacking and used to terrify the opposition. How great would it be if we had a Byron Pickett-esque player who could terrify the opposition in other ways!

Regardles, what a great prospect for the coming years provided he can work on his foot skills.

Trengove (no r) was better last night than he had been through the first 9 rounds, but still not playing up to his standards. He is much better than his performances this season indicate, and if he's not playing to the best of his abilities then people are not in the wrong to criticize him. I'm a big fan of JT but have been very disappointed with him all year, and I would say he was in our bottom few players on Saturday. Let's hope he can find some good form and have a good second half of the season.

As for the Trengove comments. I thought he played a solid game. Linked up well, ran all night. Hard at it.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
