Whats up with our Captains?

I thought both played their best games for the season today. Both have had very ordinary starts admittedly, but Grimes showed once again his ability to win clearances, while Trenners showed he has class on left and right foot. I still expect a lot more, but it was a better serve from them today.

I am completely prepared to give them time. They have had a slow start to the season, but so has pretty much every player on the list. There is no doubt that they are class players and class leaders, but these things take time. I did say pre decision that I would like to see Jones get the nod, and in hindsight that probably would have been preferrable, but I don't look at their captaincy as being a big blue. I would be amazed to see any change for next season, as Neeld made it quite clear that this was an appointment for the future and would take time to develop. Give them time, all will be well.

I don't know if it's the burden of captaincy, but Trengove has been horribly out of form. That said, I thought his last quarter was the best he'd played all year and is hopefully the portent of things to come.

The talk of changing the captaincy by some on this thread is patent rubbish. Clearly you know it won't happen, so why even bring it up ? It won't happen now and it won't happen next year. The club will help them grow into the roles and keep nurturing them.

These two players will grow into better players earlier because of the responsibility heaped upon them. We might not see their best football this year but I believe it will help them develop into better players in the long term. I believe both of them will relish the challenge ahead of them & work even harder to succeed than what they would have before. They both need time & patience. In the long run the club will reap the benefits through their peers following the example they set in preparation & attitude to hard work. As a club that is what we need & something none of the former leadership group was able to do.

Everyone is acting like Jones is the new Robbie Flower because he crumbed a few goals last week. I've got no doubt Clark is the best on field leader at the moment and Jones is certainly having a dip, but why does that mean we have to attack Grimes and Trengove who stand out as players and as leaders.

Exactly. what happens in 6-8 weeks when Jones and Clark drop their form a bit, no doubt posters will want new captains again. it seems who ever is in form must be captain.

Grimes and Trengove are just travelling but the right chocie in the long term.

Personally, I agree with the post someone made last week that we should just change captains every week, so whoever played best last week is the captain this week...

It's a terrible mistake that Neeld has made. As I wrote in his thread in the locker room - he put blind faith in players during preseason, and has been made to look like a fool. Easy in hindsight, and I didn't nominate him, but Jones is our Captain. Only bloke in 6 games this year that could walk away with a pass mark in each game.

We have hit 'hindsight' in 6 weeks?

They are doing fine, and Trengove is horribly out of sorts but still finds a way to contribute. Grimes is helping keep the overworked backline together.

If the leadership is such a burden I wonder if the Jones we see now would be the same if he was Captain Jones?

They were picked to grow into the role, quite clearly. They're not there yet with any aspect of their game (form / leadership), but out of the whole group they show the most potential to be stable and influential leaders when the group matures. Again, this is about 3 years from now when a mid 20s Trengove / Grimes lead them out in much better times.

We needed a new direction, we got one. They will learn and grow under Neeld and become people who set the culture. Had to be done. Short term pain.

It wasn't Neeld's decision who to make captain. I can't understand why people think the 'Jacks' don't deserve captaincy if a vast majority of the playing list voted for them! Give them time FFS. They are obviously outstanding characters and their on-field performances will inevitably follow

For what it is worth, I got along to quite a few pre-season sessions. Post Christmas, Trenners was often with the rehab guys - his program was quite modified. Obviously he missed some of the practice games too.

In this day and age we can't underestimate the impact of a half cooked pre-season.

He's doing ok, without being spectacular, but I am sure will come good with more miles in the legs.

If they are immune from being dropped because they are captains of the ship then this is wrong , but if they have to be thrown overboard because of lack of performance then so be ...., but cut these guys some slack, they are still valuable fish in the big ocean and casting them in the shadows at the start of a game should never be on the agenda if they are selected IMO

The boys are co captains of the playing squad

They are joined with a leadership group

We have experienced previous leaders

Not every player is available (form or fitness)every week

Maybe not even suited to opposition or structure for specific match

Leadership can be displayed throughout the club activities not just on the field

Leadership can be displayed by how you cope with being rested (not sooking) but taking as an opportunity to rebuild (form or fitness)

The boys are young and under incredible pressure

they will grow and develop if the coaching and support staff are as skilled dedicated and committed as the players in their areas

As supporters we have been used to the lows and some relative highs.We expect better and hope it will come

We support which can include trenchant furious and irrational criticism

We do not always get our actions right but lets all know our roles, maintain our passion and acknowledge improvement
