Although Robbo is rubbish, I hate the notion that you have to have played the game at the highest level to know anything about the game. A lot of guys who have played shitloads of games are still complete airheads.

Modern media today is not about the quality of content rather the quantity of content. Air time and pages must be filled. The obvious sacrifice in this arrangement is quality. When quality is not a factor the likes of Robinson and Barrett and any number of other witless drones come to the fore. Given that there is only ever a finite number of football related stories out there and intense competition to secure them the other casualty is quite often the truth. These sacrifices are often dismissed by the industry by describing these pieces as "Opinion", thus all responsibility is absolved. As with everything else in life the answers lie with the Simpsons. I love Robbo, partly because I find it amazing how someone like him can get a gig as a football journalist for so long.

He might be useless half the time, but he certainly doesn't hold back his opinion and now and then he comes up with a gem that everyone else was thinking but was too afraid to say.

As long as there's only one Robbo I can live with it.

At the moment there is a learning bridge between old-school journos like Robbo moving from print to TV.

It's the get it off the shelf, way of today'. Disposable theories in what once was, disposable newspapers. There was a time when people used them in the toilet.

The problem is not whether they have played footy at the highest level or not? It's all to do with their analysis of the game, of which past players are at fault as much as any other journalist/reporter/commentator

Totally agree with this thread and it frustrates me no end.

Their faces and personalities have become as important as their content, yet their content is often about Tweeting, speculation and "reading between the lines". TV journos are one thing, but radio and print journos becoming famous on TV? No thanks.

I liked One Week at a Time on channel 10 but that has gone. Now, the Sunday Inquisition on ABC with Gerard Whately and Stan Alves is the best footy reporting and commentary you can get.
