As a backman in a former life (season) I always put it on the midfield as a 'partner' of getting the ball out of the backline.

I would tell them if you are standing next to me you are of little use - maybe a handball if in space, and if you are standing still 30m away with your bloke on you, then you are of no use.

It starts and ends in the middle, and I still think our mids don't work hard enough, or smart enough, for long enough to give our defenders options.

I'm not saying these two shouldn't own their clangers but they need the mids to spread and find some cheap footy.

(Ironically, something Morton gets pilloried for...)

Spot on RP, everyone's skills and decision making look atrocious when there are no viable options.

Regardless of position on the field. If grimes and morton can't consistently hit targets coming out of the backline we are making it easy for the opposition. Neeld would expect grimes and morton to hit players effectively coming out of the backline.

Mark Neeld would be well aware of the midfield problem. this is going to take some time to resolve. poor kicking should not be tolerate.

Chicken and egg.

How can they hit a target that doesn't exist? How can they be expected to not hit a one-on-one on the defensive wing if that's all that is on offer?

When our midfield puts it's 'man pants' on and grows some testicular fortitude and leadership - everything else will suddenly become easier.

Then you can worry about people missing targets coming out of the backline.

I saw Jack , Morton and Watts on different occasions whem they had the ball hold off in the middle of an intuitive action to dispose of the ball because there simply was no option.

I often saw Watts do this in previous seasons , almost af if the intuitive response was ahead of others in the team. It sometimes looked wrong but as more options open up I see that the so called improvement in Watts delivery is confidence of the player receiving the ball. I am hoping that this is one of the issues of structure that Neeld and coaches talk about. That the more highly skilled draft picks can execute. It may be about fitness and it may be about physical size and strength etc but its also alot about the confidence of yourself and those around you.

It was great to see that confidence growing last weekend and even scaping a narrow win at Casey can be infectious for confidence of the team.

so you are saying when we get a better midfield it will solve grimes poor kicking?

so based on your theory if we move grimes into the midfield we will still have a problem with the kicking from the defence?

put simple...i see grimes (and morton) miss targets that aren't under pressure coming out of the backline. Last season people questioned the kicking of grimes.

What I am saying is that our midfield don't work hard enough to provide GOOD options for our backline to kick to. When you see Morton and Grimes miss an open target THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

I am talking about the majority of their 'turnovers' that occur when they bomb it to no-one or attempt to hit a stationary player surrounded by opposition.

That is a failure up the chain and has little to do with how Morton connects on his kicks.

When we don't have the footy our mids don't spread, they don't work hard enough and they are lazy and they have been this way for years.

The midfield is where it starts and ends - as a forward it is difficult to say this but it is all about the midfield - the rest is just dressing, icing, BBQ sauce or whatever condiment you wish to have.

JT, Wattsy and Grimes all had great games. I wonder if the media will pull out the handful of jacks headline?

That's right. It was his best performance in the red n blue to date. IMO he did everything you could ask of him as a captain last night. It was great to see him get some time playing in the centre also, which was his position when he was u/18 captain of Vic metro. Well done Jack your heart beats true.
