Ultimate Footy - Norm Smith League

Excuse my stupidity JA however I have a couple of questions about the lottery

If we say place all our bids on Selection 2 & our lucky number does not come up, @ what point would we re-enter the draft?

Am I correct in assumming after all selections are taken by live bids & we have worked our way up from the bottom of the ladder?

What is the required deadline to submit bids?

If you place all your bids on pick 2 and don't get drawn out then those bids are lost and you will be at the mercy of waiting until an empty bucket turns up AND there are no available coaches lower you on the list. That is the risk you take by bidding hard for an early pick. But as we get through the picks there will be more and more chances of finding empty buckets because because fewer and fewer valid bids will remain.

A safe bid would be to go for picks 8 & 10. By then there will be fewer available coaches and you might find that your bid will be the only valid one in the bucket.

You might also consider going for picks 2 & 12, this way you give yourself an early chance and an insurance pick.

Ultimately it is up to you how hard you are prepared to go.

I will begin the lottery once everyone has submitted their bids or on the Sunday preceding the draft.

2 bids in already! Keep them coming.

I took this to the table last year for discussion with other mods and it got turned down. Does it matter if two leagues of teams are posting on the one thread ? I don't think it matters, it's like one big happy family.

There's good and bad there... On one hand, everyone hangs out talking ufooty, all 32 of us... On the other hand when someone does the smacktalk, it might get confusing figuring out who's doing well in what league and where... Plus if someone has a topic they're bringing up it might get swamped in smacktalk from dozens of competitors from other leagues. I think basically I lean towards separating them.

Taking a positive spin on this, maybe - just maybe - with two divisions going this year. JA, OMR, IWAP ,etc (or for that matter all concerned) we could discuss the possibility of a relegation/promotion system for the following years leagues. ie. bottom four, top four teams switch leagues next year ? How does everyone feel about that ?

I floated this last year, some people took to it... I think it can be discussed for the end of the year. I like it mostly because it gives the end of year bottom 8 finals series something to play for (avoiding relegation), and adds some detail and intrigue... the problem would be that in a secondary league, the keeper rules would get all stuffed up. The only solution, that JA suggested in a roundabout way, is that, let's say two teams are relegated every year and two teams are promoted... you pick up the "keepers" of the teams that vacated their spot on either list. This in itself is pretty ugly, since one could assume that the reason they went so badly in the first place is that their keeper players were shite... And that the reason the promoted teams won their league was that their keeper players were awesome. It'd be pretty rough going from having Swan, Pendlebury, Nicknat and Selwood one year then dropping down to 2 retirees and a couple of #1 draft busts with ACLs the next...

So yeah, assuming keeper leagues are going to stay in, it won't work I don't think. And having 4 designated "kept" players over 32 teams would seriously hurt the draft every year.

My head hurts.

Relegation assumes that the RF league is somehow worse than ours, I don't think that is correct really, it's not like we are better.

And the more I think about it the more I think we should take a leaf out of the R Flower league and name our league after a great of our club. And really when it comes to a game that decides the greatest coach amongst us there is only one name to consider.

Would it be too much HT to rename the league (forum) to 'Ultimate Footy - Norm Smith League'?

Norm Smith is a great choice however in season 2012

I think we should honour Big Jimmmy.

Ultimate Footy - Jim Stynes Leauge gets my vote.

If we are going down this track anyway in 2013 then this One Player ONLY MVP 2011 selection will add an interesting twist to this season.

Yes / No / Maybe - Thoughts?

I would like this. Sounds like it's off the table though... and yes... I would like it because I had Sandi. :)

Jackliveshere: Accepts the blame for last year's debacle after choosing number 31 for his jumper. Is considering number 10 for next year. Genuinely believes, and has so for many years, that Mitch Clark is the greatest player in the game.

Oooh. Norm Smith would be the most influential ever demon. I'd LOVE that. But in the end, no mention of Jimmy would be criminal...

I reckon this one, Jim Stynes league, second one Robbie Flower, third one Norm Smith and fourth one (if they ever materialise) Barassi.

Norm Smith League for mine. Has an air of superiority about it that the magoos in R. Flower can only aspire to.

Perhaps we can have a relegation/promotion scenario at the end of the year? Top four from R. Flower go up, bottom four from N. Smith go down.

Would keep things very lively at both ends of the ladder right up 'til the final round's play.

Thoughts?

I'm all for The Norm Smith league, however he already has a medal named after him, and I'm sure Jimmy will to in the not too distant future - what about the Frank 'Checker' Hughes league, immortalise the man who brought the Demon to Demonland? Without Checker we would be posting on something called 'pretty pink fuschias'!!!

Vote 1 Checker

And yes all for promotion relegation mix it up a bit - 4 up 4 down just to keep it lively sounds good RR

Sorry to intrude on the big boys board, but as you're talking relegation I thought I might throw my two bob in.

Not sure how this keeper thing works but there is a natural progression in keepers anyway. The teams that came up could not keep anyone but get PP's. This would allow them first dibs on blokes they think might step up into the elite bracket. Not sure if it's possible but it would allow older under performing elites to be dropped in favor of the up and comers.

I'd be in favor of relegation as it mixes things up and would, over time, help us to get to know more of our fellow posters, and help to ensure the competitions are more even.

Having said that, if I were you guys I'd wait and see how our league goes before opening things up. Last season our league didn't have 1 trade done that I'm aware of as there was only a few of us playing and our starting players were too valuable to trade. 3/4's of the players were tied up in inactive teams.

Half our new league haven't even identified themselves yet and I'm already worried it could be another fizzer. I'll admit I kept an eye on your comp last year and it looked like fun if you can get it working properly. If I were you guys I wouldn't even consider it until you're sure our league is working.

Peeps,

Long time reader, first time poster.

Have also changed my name from Dream Team when I registered 5 years ago to the winning formula that is Watts Cook n.

Thanks for having me in your league this year.

Will be very interesting with the new complexities. Much more tactical.

Are we 100% on the 7.5 system?

JCB has stated this lottery thing is very confusing. He reckons he trusts JA- just to place in order by putting the 18 names in a hat, mug , whatever and just draw it. It seems to hard and tiresome However, he has sent his pick to JA vIa me to his PM.

He will be back in contact next weekend

thanks to all

Either Norm Smith or Jimmy Stynes is fine with me.

You can't have a Keeper Leauge & a Relegation/Promotion concept.

It's one or the other.

Based on Furious D's post I would be steering clear of heading down that track.

Our Leauge had alot of trading / sledging / interaction in 2011 we have a 100% retention rate from last year

When your on a good thing - Stick to it

Apologies if the bid system is overly complicated. But I wouldn't get bogged down in the details.

A simple way of thinking about it is: You can risk more by going for an early pick, but you risk defaulting to a later pick.

The technicalities of how I achieve that are there for you to read if you want to really analyze it, but are not critical.

9/18 coaches have submitted their bids.

Yes. Watch your manners. I have my eye on you.

9/18 coaches have submitted their bids.

For everyone who's struggling to understand it, all it really is, should you forget to put in your bid, is reverse order from last year... pretty much... Me for example. I've put in my bid but after a solid season last year I only have one token.... so I don't expect I'll get my preferred pick. If that's the case, more than likely I'll end up in the last few picks.

It's still fair. I think of it as basically exactly as it should be, with a little twist.

I'm sensing a bit of worry on your part OMR. Not a lot of confidence in those words.

Careful or you might be accused of bruise-free fantasy footy ...

I don't think so RR - We simply can't have both leauge setups, its one or the other

However I can recall some worry last season on your behalf about your top of the ladder combo facing the might of OMR late in the season.

From memory I smashed you & sent you into a downward tumble that you never recovered from.

Take note I won't be such a slow starter in season 2012

When the real stuff starts you know the doubts will resurface.

Look forward to some early season trading with you Old Foe!

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
