Isn't that basically what Connolly's job has been i.e. reporting to the board as a conduit between the FD and Front Office? He's gone quiet and they may have restructured this role somewhat but I'm not sure whether Connolly will be undertaking the same duties next year? From memory he was moved on (and maybe temporarily replaced by Lyon? My memory is a bit hazy now on all the comings and goings since 186.)

NeilCraig is now the defacto head of the Footy Dept if this report is to be believed and I seem to remember a press release stating Craig would report to the board.

This would leave the Footy Dept head on the same structural level as the CEO and I can see why they have gone down that path after the issues the Footy Dept had with adequate communication to the board, however the Football Director on the board should be talking to all in the levels in the organisation not just the head of the Admin (Schwab) and the head of the Footy Dept (Craig).

I don't think we will know what real role Garry played in helping the club but what he did do was give the supporter base and others someone to get behind when everything was turning sour. The irony of course is that Garry played a significant role in the fiasco following the Geelong game.

My hope is that the Board recognize their role (which they clearly didn't in July) and they are not swayed by media in the way they were in July. When Scully left Cam Schwab made the comment that "you should not underestimate the ability of football clubs to recover from adversity". I suspect Garry is getting the credit for the work of a lot of people but that's probably good for the club and I'm fine with that.

I am trying to work out who Garry "rescued" us from and if he was the "knight in shining armour" what does that say about those he replaced.

I think Greg Healy sounds like a good choice for President. I dont think there are any others. While an ailing Stynes will remain in the background he has more important issues than returning as President.

And its does seem somewhat murky with Garry and Jim having ex officio roles at the Club. I trust the new President will be given full reigns and support by the Board.

I think you will find that Jim Stynes will continue to be President of the Melbourne Football Club. In the notice of the AGM it was stated that Jim & some one else was up for re-election and as there were no other nominations they were duly elected. For Greg Healy to be added to the board, I believe the board will have to vote to add an extra person who would then have to re stand at the next elections at the end of this year. Has been done in the past when required.

Oops on the Healy role. Good as a director I think we have a gap now in the President's role given Stynes health. I may have been thinking out loud on the Presidents role.

Given what Stynes has been through and still dealing with I would be surprised if he can continue effectively in the role. His past 12 months in the role have been compromised by his health. If he did step down I cant believe he would not seek to be involved.

Well given Healy hasn't got the time to liase with FD (hence Craig's new role) I doubt he would be a candidate for next president unless his personal/business situation changed drastically.

I am sure he was a lot of things, but the title was Football Director. But for a few weeks there he was also the heart & soul. I thank him most sincerely as i am sure Stynesy does.

However I think his inability to be intimately involved through a large part of 2011 led to some of the problems.

The MFC must now function with him as the figure head.

Jim now moves into the 'Nelson Mandela role'. Spiritual and symbolic figurehead.

Very impressive interview. Did i read somewhere McLardy was not a Demon supporter? I think i read he was a Carlton supporter and he knew Jimmy from the Reach program/board.

Fan, stop finding grey where there is clearly only black and white. Demonland regulars have already confirmed and published the MFC 20011 - 2012 chapter in our soon to be relased online club history. Jim saved the club, Bailey almost killed it, Garry stepped in when Jim was too sick to save it twice and Neeld will break our premiership drought. Trengove will hold aloft the premiership cup and Scully will cry himself to sleep lamenting his career-crippling knee problems. It's that simple.

In all seriousness, as sloppy as the Bailey exit was, I couldn't imagine the club recovering in a more efficient manner. The Neeld, Craig, Misson trio plus a significant off-season trade has most supporters scrounging for their rose coloured glasses again. And of course, I'm no different. That's what we do!

Of course, you're right. We are no doubt witnessing the result of the work of many but we all know where the buck stopped and whose heads were and are on the chopping block if these initiatives were to end in failure. Garry was on a hiding to nothing.

 It's now up to others at the club to follow things through to what we all hope is going to be a successful outcome but at this point in time, I marvel at what he and Don (and those others) have achieved whilst filling in the breach for their mate.
