Garry Lyon's six-month rescue mission over

Featured Replies

Isn't that basically what Connolly's job has been i.e. reporting to the board as a conduit between the FD and Front Office? He's gone quiet and they may have restructured this role somewhat but I'm not sure whether Connolly will be undertaking the same duties next year? From memory he was moved on (and maybe temporarily replaced by Lyon? My memory is a bit hazy now on all the comings and goings since 186.)

There is still a lot of confusion on exactly what role Garry filled.

He filled in the role that Jim Stynes was supposed to play as the Football Director. This role is for a board member who knows footy to have the ear of the entire club and report to the rest of the board any issues that need to be resolved or have been mitigated.

Connolly was the head of the Football Department and reported to the CEO.

He is now in an ambassaorial role.

NeilCraig is now the defacto head of the Footy Dept if this report is to be believed and I seem to remember a press release stating Craig would report to the board.

This would leave the Footy Dept head on the same structural level as the CEO and I can see why they have gone down that path after the issues the Footy Dept had with adequate communication to the board, however the Football Director on the board should be talking to all in the levels in the organisation not just the head of the Admin (Schwab) and the head of the Footy Dept (Craig).

I don't think we will know what real role Garry played in helping the club but what he did do was give the supporter base and others someone to get behind when everything was turning sour. The irony of course is that Garry played a significant role in the fiasco following the Geelong game.

I believe we are exactly were we would want to be now. The changes at the club have been made possible by the extra funding from the AFL and the efforts of people to attract the right people.

My hope is that the Board recognize their role (which they clearly didn't in July) and they are not swayed by media in the way they were in July. When Scully left Cam Schwab made the comment that "you should not underestimate the ability of football clubs to recover from adversity". I suspect Garry is getting the credit for the work of a lot of people but that's probably good for the club and I'm fine with that.

Yeah sorry got confused, it was Leoncelli who was that role and then Stynes took it over when Leoncelli left. Got my wires crossed.

Well done Garry and thank you for the rescue package over the past six months.

I am trying to work out who Garry "rescued" us from and if he was the "knight in shining armour" what does that say about those he replaced.

I think Greg Healy sounds like a good choice for President. I dont think there are any others. While an ailing Stynes will remain in the background he has more important issues than returning as President.

And its does seem somewhat murky with Garry and Jim having ex officio roles at the Club. I trust the new President will be given full reigns and support by the Board.

I think you will find that Jim Stynes will continue to be President of the Melbourne Football Club. In the notice of the AGM it was stated that Jim & some one else was up for re-election and as there were no other nominations they were duly elected. For Greg Healy to be added to the board, I believe the board will have to vote to add an extra person who would then have to re stand at the next elections at the end of this year. Has been done in the past when required.

I only look at the pictures in the Hun.

Oops on the Healy role. Good as a director I think we have a gap now in the President's role given Stynes health. I may have been thinking out loud on the Presidents role.

Given what Stynes has been through and still dealing with I would be surprised if he can continue effectively in the role. His past 12 months in the role have been compromised by his health. If he did step down I cant believe he would not seek to be involved.

Well given Healy hasn't got the time to liase with FD (hence Craig's new role) I doubt he would be a candidate for next president unless his personal/business situation changed drastically.

P.S. I bet you are a closet Hun reader

Garry was the Football Director as i see it, which is what i would hope Greg Healy will become if he is ready.

Big call on the Presidency Rhino. If i made that call you would be abusing me black & Blue & firing shots from the grassy knoll.

Jimmy aint going anywhere...this job gives him strength and purpose.

Garry's role was a lot more than Football Director. I don't think you can just put a single label on it

Best described as a temporary extra-ordinary role with special powers.

Of course all his recommendations would have utimately had to have board approval

I am sure he was a lot of things, but the title was Football Director. But for a few weeks there he was also the heart & soul. I thank him most sincerely as i am sure Stynesy does.

Thats a pretty good around about way of describing it.

So as the temporary heart and soul of the Club he was doing more than being Football Director. Glad we got that one settled.

Jimmy aint going anywhere...this job gives him strength and purpose.

Unfortunately I dont think Jimmy has much say in this outcome. Stynes stepped aside six months ago because of his terrible health and he could not cope with the job. It would appear he has been given additional time to live to be with the real strength and purpose.... his direct family. He should spend this valuable time with them. He has made a wonderful contribution to MFC but I think he should step aside for his own and the Club's future progress.

I could not agree more RR.

However I think they will leave him there as the figure head for 2012 or however long!

There is no doubt in my mind that at present he is the President in name only.

Bloody sad but that is the reality IMO.

Jimmy will be the President as long as he is with us. Yes he will have assistance but i have no doubt this position is giving him strength, that hopefully is going right through the club.

You are right wyl he will be president for 2012

However I think his inability to be intimately involved through a large part of 2011 led to some of the problems.

The MFC must now function with him as the figure head.

He looked alright on the front of the Hun the other morning. He aint done yet. As the Ox just said on radio

"Jimmy played for 6 weeks with 6 broken ribs during his career" If Lance Armstrong can do it...we all gotta pump Jimma positive energy.

Mclardy was just on SEN and is quietly confident Sugar will be on board within a month.

Yep, and here's the podcast, Don Mclardy talking about Lyon, Sugar Healy and a little about Stynes too

So explain to me why we have to get a "saviour" to fix up the past 12 months?

If anything his medical condition has detoriated and is lucky to be seeing past Christmas.

We need to move beyond idolatry and grasp a bit of reality. I trust the Board has.

Very impressive interview. Did i read somewhere McLardy was not a Demon supporter? I think i read he was a Carlton supporter and he knew Jimmy from the Reach program/board.

Not making any aspirtions he and the board are doing a fantastic job

McLardy has been a long term MFC supporter.

Fan, stop finding grey where there is clearly only black and white. Demonland regulars have already confirmed and published the MFC 20011 - 2012 chapter in our soon to be relased online club history. Jim saved the club, Bailey almost killed it, Garry stepped in when Jim was too sick to save it twice and Neeld will break our premiership drought. Trengove will hold aloft the premiership cup and Scully will cry himself to sleep lamenting his career-crippling knee problems. It's that simple.

In all seriousness, as sloppy as the Bailey exit was, I couldn't imagine the club recovering in a more efficient manner. The Neeld, Craig, Misson trio plus a significant off-season trade has most supporters scrounging for their rose coloured glasses again. And of course, I'm no different. That's what we do!

Quite simply RR Jimmy Stynes is still in the reality. Without him we would be on the Gold Coast or worse GW$.

Of course, you're right. We are no doubt witnessing the result of the work of many but we all know where the buck stopped and whose heads were and are on the chopping block if these initiatives were to end in failure. Garry was on a hiding to nothing.

It's now up to others at the club to follow things through to what we all hope is going to be a successful outcome but at this point in time, I marvel at what he and Don (and those others) have achieved whilst filling in the breach for their mate.

I thing it's a great story and could be the (re)making of our club.

The reality of the situation is that he is a terminally ill man with advanced secondary cancer throughout his body. He is on borrowed time and is lucky to have got this far.

Your sycophatic hoopla on Stynes would make a North Korean propaganda director blush with embarrassment.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
