Anyone that doesn't think that what a captain does off the field is as if not more important on field is kidding themselves. Captain is the figurehead spokesmen that will be mainly used with media and corporates off field. Of course your captain should be a starting 18 player but they do not need to be a superstar. Look at Harley, Maxwell, Cassisi, The player should have the respect of the leadership group and the playing group as a whole but it is really the whole leadership group that ensures the players toe the line. That is why you have diverse range of age and position.

Moloney gives his all but goes missing in big games. No disrespect but his manner and delivery off field to me do not lend him to be captain.

Frawley will lead by action but does not lend me to be one to thrive in the media and corporate aspects the job requires.

Green was captain in a tough year last year but should just focus on playing his best footy. That is the best way for him to lead.

Trengove and Grimes are clearly starting 18 players who will only improve and already tick the other boxes required.

If Moloney, Jones, Green do not get the captaincy their is nothing stopping them showing just as much leadership on field than if they were. It just means they dont run through the banner first.

Honest call - love Jones dearly but honest call.

I love Moloney, but Jones is a mental giant in comparison!

That's why I say no to both those options.

Geez, Grimes is courageous and everything but I don't exactly want him showing how to switch play deep in the backline. Once he fixes up his brain fades then i'm all for it.

My priority is for Trengove. Not just us, but I wish all clubs would harden up and pick a guy captain based on merit and not disregard someone because of their age. Trengove is great on the field and great off it.

Ok, I suppose the comment about "interviews" threw me... but I would contend that onfield barking instructions/giving encouragement to players he is comfortable with and knows intimately (not in the biblical sense), is a very different situation than having to speak into a microphone and even speak casually with someone you aren't familiar with.

I think I once stated a long time ago in a similar thread, that appointing Moloney would probably see him becoming far more focused as being a Dees supporter as a child, this would no doubt have been a lifelong dream... I know that applies to others as well (Grime?) but Moloney strikes me as someone who would benefit from the added pressure rather than buckle as Green seems to have done.

I see what you're saying, but I really see the captain's role as being a conduit between the coach and the playing group.

The captain's most important role is to communicate to the players as a group and as individuals, and convince them to buy-in to the coach's gameplan.

They also need to be able to intelligently interpret feedback and then choose the best course of action.

Listening is a very important skill for them to have.

Communication and decision-making just aren't Moloney's strong suit.

There's a lot more to leadership than fire & brimstone.

This type of out-dated and over-exaggerated group think is embarrassing.

Big call there....

Harsh but fair IMO.

I've had a few chats with the bloke at the western demons dinner functions in recent years. Hes a nice bloke but he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. Grimes has a good head on his shoulders - he'll represent the club well whether its on the field, at a corporate dinner or a local kids meet and greet day.

The only thing that gives Green any chance of the captaincy is that from the outsiders perspective there is no obvious certain replacement.

Moloney- Yes he bleeds red and blue (whatever that means) but goes missing in big games and under pressure.

Grimes - Lets get him on the paddock first get some games in him but I can see him as a future leader

Trengove - The club needs to determine if its the right time and position for him. Definite future leader. Expect to be in leadeship group.

Frawley - Possible leadership group but not captain.

Jamar - If Grimes is out because he is too injured then how long can Jamar carry on for and how games has he got left in him?

Jones - At best a candidate for the leadership but Captain...no. As our midfield develops I am not sure he is a future part of it.

Davey - Yeah well......Pass

The Club have an interesting choice to make given they have the inside running on candidate. I cant ping a favourite except if the Club feels JT is ready for it.

Are there any other type???

Michael Young as captain of Carlton ( and ewww he came to the MFC)

Aaah the old Grimes for captain malarkey again.

Frawley would be my pick. Who will get the job? Probably Green again.

Wouldn't mind Frawley but would rather a midfielder after having Neitz stuck at FF as a Captain unable to influence games like a midfielder can.

the name Jack Grimes seems to come up everytime leadership is mentioned...as an outsider i find this amazing considering he struggles to keep fit.

What does leadership have to do with fitness. Who is to say that whoever we name as captain wont do a season ending injury round 1?

That sounds just like Junior Mac

Also sounds like a 'Ling'.

Not a bad thing for a CAPTAIN, something like a Ling. Or a bodgy like Hodgy.

Jones is ready Now. Trenners is a ways off.

St.Kildas method of changing every year was stupid, Lenny was there and should have remained captain, there would be no better captain on their list, he is the player you would do anything for. I'd love Trenners to Captain the club.

Weren't Queensland sides into Riewoldt around that time?

Jamar is ready now.

I think it's all pretty simple. Deep down everyone here thinks that Trengove is the most obvious leader on our list. The only question is whether 2012 is too soon. I think he'll get the job.

Your making assumptions.

Based on a glaring fact.

I don't know what 'Jamar can be captain' is based on...

Enlighten me.

Jamar has never been in the leadership group.

That tells you something, or at least it should...

My thoughts also, same for Frawley, although he has not been there as long. One of them may be in the leadership group, but I disagree with anyone thinking that they are a chance for captain.

you can't help bad luck of injuries....below is what neeld has said. If you were to argue grimes against that how does he fair?

Neeld has said "We want guys to deliver through actions," he said. "We want guys to be consistent in their performance and we want players who are going to be a positive influence on their teammates and their whole club.

"We want players who can consistently show it's not just about leadership of a footy team, it's about (leading) a club and it's a sporting code."

Well, maybe it depends on the situation, but at the Shanghai game where he was Captain, I saw him schmoozing with various officials from Kaspersky and local dignitaries and he appeared quite comfortable, and they appeared quite attentive to what he had to say... of course I couldn't hear what the conversations were about, but he didn't appear uncomfortable at all.

I shared your concerns, and am disappointed in Clark if this is what he actually tweeted, or twittered or whatever.

He is new to the club, and has apparently chosen to promulgate speculation on a very important and pretty sensitive situation in the club.

Why would he do this?? Is he actually a team man, or an individual who likes to big name himself?? If so, is that related to reasons behind his departure from Brisbane and his lack of performance there?

This wasn't tweeted by Mitch Clark, it was by Jay Clark, the journalist. This has already been established in this thread.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
