Altitude training in China?

Featured Replies

Article by Caroline Wilson in today's broadsheet. And perhaps a front of jumper sponsor,

Yeah great news on both fronts and as many suspected, the Chinese sponsor is gaining momentum!!

Well done CS. A Man who is always looking at the bigger picture. Tom $cully did not comehome because of alchohol consumption. He came home to sign a contract.

China could be a Massive get for the Demons. Our name is what it is.

Maybe the China trip will end up being beneficial in many ways.

Sponsor

Altitude training

Expelling a toxic influence

In the light of the current state of the world's economies, if we can't snare a local sponsor, I would much prefer a sponsor from China than from Europe or the USA.

And someone should remind Caro that much of the alcohol fuelled behaviour from that tour emanated from the other club that was there. She herself has documented the problems of one player from that club whose behaviour continued to spiral on a downward path, who never played for the Brisbane Lions again and who, according to Caro, won't ever make it back onto an AFL list.

To connect lies about the tour from the Scully camp with this story about a possible sponsorship IMO demonstrates poor form from an otherwise well respected journalist.

Not true WYL. He came home for genuine "family issues". His father was considering a career change and massive pay rise.

She also doesn't mention what a great job CS seems to be doing...

I see your Arizona........and raise you a Yunnan !!

Well Caro...you know what they say about Chinese whispers ....you never end up with the actual truth !!

I know nothing of the actual facilities or the altitude, but if the Chinese Olympic teams are training there one would presume than no expense has been spared, and particularly if we were to gain a local sponsor could prove less expensive as well as compared with the US facilities.

And just a logistics matter - those of us who have done it know the transpacific flights really knock the stuffing out for up to a few days each end, which can't be good for maintaining full fitness and alertness. On the other hand, traveling via KL (8.5 hrs) to Kunming - only a further 3.5 hours - and a time zone change of only about 5 hours can only compare favourably with Arizona or Colorado provided as I said the facilities are right.

Sounds exciting.

PS: 1,900 metres above sea level cf Denver 1,500-1,700

The biggest local sponsor there is a cigarette company...lol.. They actually paid to build of the two larger complexes.. What irony.

"Tom Scully returned home early from China citing family issues, but his supporters have pointed to his disenchantment with the tour as one reason he became more vulnerable to a massive offer from Greater Western Sydney."

Just who are these "supporters"? Clearly his shifty manager Peter Blucher whose been planting these furphies on his client's behalf all season ... and his old man, Lucky Phil. Caro would do well to name them instead misrepresenting them as a legitimate group of some kind.

mum, dad, sis !!!!

The high-altitude training is welcome news.

The rest is BS and conjecture.

Didn't harm Collingwood in 2010, and I don't think it was jetlag that lost them the Grand Final this year. Seriously...

Its quite heartening to see that much of the hard yards over the years trying to get a Sino-Aussie thing happening is actually bearing fruit.

Whilst almost incidental in way of news it could have major ramifications down the track. First in best dressed into the huge Chinese market can only yield dividends.

Very forward thinking by the club.. crossed finger and such.

Splitting hairs I know, but it's 3 hours difference (and just 2 during the winter months).

LOL, Had to have a little chuckle as this made me immediately think of Norf and Friday nights

I see where ya coming from but Nth let so much slide.

Im not sure this is apples and apples.. Melbourne for some years now has been developing business and sporting connections with China. We were the rollout team for the AAFL.. yes. the Lions were there but only really as a game of one team is a bit dull. This was our reward. Im sure others will look on enviously and seek to covet where they can but it takes time, lots of it, to get anywhere in China. Anyone else just thinking they can rock up and go will be in for a rude shock.

Let's just see some dollars rolling in before we get too excited. We had our Hors d'oeuvres with Kaspersky, now let's move on to our entree. Too many are wanting to go straight to the main course.

I'd still love to know how long we've been working on this market for. "Some years" is the best I've heard, but tells me JS.

nah, not saying it is apples/apples but for some reason made me think of norf etc

wasn't norf's fault either really, AFL used them as cannon fodder, let them do all the hard yakka, pioneering etc then told them to pizz orf as there was bigger biccies playing the benefactors majors

Kaspersky paid $1m for what Energy Watch paid $2m.

Hankook paid $700k for the front of jumper.

Lawrie got a great deal...

I believe the delay in signing a sponsor means Cameron rightly thinks that we need to get $1.5m+ for the FoJ to compete.

Let's hope it is soon, because we are probably eating into the future fund or whatever we call it...

Edit: Remove BS wording.

When has CS quoted $1.5m for the FoJ? Still is less than the >$1.9m that people are expecting.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
