Melbourne vs the Western Bulldogs, Round 21 2004 (or 05). Russell Robertson is directly in front of goal, about 15 metres out in a spirited comeback. To put us around a goal behind (or perhaps even in front). The ball sprays off the side of the boot and barely scrapes in for a behind. We went on to win with a piece of Aaron Davey magic to smother the kick of a young Adam Cooney. At the resulting throw-in, Jeff White gets a ruck free kick and slots it from the fifty metre arc and we go on to win, which puts us into the finals following an easy win against Essendon (I believe).

So it didn't end up mattering, but Robbo's atrocious kick at goal nearly cost us a finals spot.

aah yes the duke. That '88 elim was such a surreal game. I was at work in the newsroom & actually walked outside for a smoke on the fire escape after Earl missed that one, we were done. As i lit my cig i heard a huge roar and bolted back inside. Stunning handball get & kick from G. Lyon

aah yes the duke. That '88 elim was such a surreal game. I was at work in the newsroom & actually walked outside for a smoke on the fire escape after Earl missed that one, we were done. As i lit my cig i heard a huge roar and bolted back inside. Stunning handball get & kick from G. Lyon

It certainly was, from memory it was the great Alan Johnson who bombed it long to the top of the square and David Williams got the hanball out to Lyon...great moment...thankfully David Hart missed that last shot at goal

Yes Alan Johnson scored a perfect 10 for that game at the B&F that year! David Williams was the man, and it was Murray Wrenstead who missed for Wet Coke. That final is etched in my brain as i was finally able to watch a Melbourne Collingwood final the week after at the 'G. It was a beautiful thing.

You're right, it's a bit of a blur after the Lyon goal, great times....i still can't believe that Sean Wight is no longer with us.

Eishold '87 Prelim ... no contest.

In my memory Eishold wins hands down at least as far as Melbourne matches are concerned.

I remember the commentary so well "he just doest want to take this kick"!!

That would have given us a lead -- and poor Jimma's run across the mark would never have happened, or if it had, been irrelevant and long forgotten.

Still, nobody would have beaten Carlscum the following week, after that swelter at VFL Park.

In my memory Eishold wins hands down at least as far as Melbourne matches are concerned.

Our car was parked very close to the Hawthorn Cheer Squad van. Didn't we all cop it for at least an hour after the game. It was horrible in all ways. Which is why the merger would never have worked.

That's an interesting comment. I have had many arguements with a mate who is a Carlton supporter, but I do believe the Dee's would have won that year. Will never know.

There are 2 flags in my lifetime that got away from us - 1987 (as mentioned above), and 1998 when Adelaide defeated North. We flogged the Crows in the final at the G - was by about 8 goals IIRC, then we had to play bloody North in a Friday night Prelim, after they had played some massive amount of Friday night games throughout the year.

Sorry for getting off topic. Back on topic, and kick that Grimes does coming out of the backline. Most are important kicks, and he has a terrible habit of stuffing them up.

Brian Wilson & Robbie Flower both had broken collar bones after that game, so i don't believe we had any show against Carlscum. Still doesn't change my absolute sadness felt on that day. It truly was the same feeling as losing a loved one.

'98 was a total travesty!! How did the Froot Loops get a home final the week after we smashed them?? Wayne Jackson was in charge. The finals draw was a joke that year.

Yeats, Campbell and Eishold made monumental blunders in the last quarter.

WJ is right. The Bucky kick was the worst. I still cant watch any of that game.

wouldn't matter who kicked it. The stress levels would be off the scale mate!!

Hassa Mann's shocker post-Gabbo run in the 1964 Grand Final (from directly in front) which could have put us back in front with a few minutes remaining. We finally strung some 'beautiful football' together courtesy Barassi and Bourke only to see Hassa miss. Fortunately Neil Crompton stepped into history shortly after.
