A couple from Stevie Wonder

Here’s a very abridged clip of my band doing a song by the Melbourne singer songwriter Paul Madigan. I used to enjoy traveling to the Tiger Lounge in Richmond every Saturday afternoon to watch him and his band The Humans (Ross Hannaford, Wayne Duncan and Freddie Strauks), in the latter part of the 70’s.

I’m hoping this link works as I’m not sure about the privacy level my friend has on his Instagram account. Please let me know if you have trouble viewing it...

Quite the interesting chap, Paul Madigan.  I used to love his radio show on 3RRR in the early 80s.

High calibre band as well, featuring two Daddy Cools and a Skyhook.  Did Doody perform at the gigs?  :D

Haha... unfortunately not; but I did hear some interesting stories about her luring chaps home only to have them surprised by Paul springing out of a wardrobe. True? No idea, but it makes for a great mental image.

The Monkees haven't been seen here on this thread but as popular as they were back in the day they were also underrated ... the following 2 songs were hugely popular here in Oz in the late 60's but Davey Jones doesn't feature on lead vocals in either song

And I'm not sure that 'Mary Mary' was ever released as a single outside of Australia but the words to the song were rather risque by today's standards!

My band played this afternoon and we had a few guests sit in, that included Vince, the guitarist from the Hitmen and Psychotic Turnbuckles (for anyone old enough to remember), Chester the singer from the Turnbuckles and Archie the drummer from the Huxton Creepers. This was my first time meeting Archie, but we bonded very quickly upon learning we share a love of the Dees.

Point of order ... Stairway to Heaven was never released as a single.

Should I have said songs then?

Yet more shameless self promotion...

Last Sunday (20th Dec) we (The Branch Covidians) played in an event called COGIG19, which is an online streaming festival running over a period of 19 days and aiming to set a new world record for online acts performing out of one location as a festival; achieved by the middle of the first week.  It featured artists from all over the planet.  This link is to a YouTube playlist of a half dozen songs, I cut from our stream and edited; hope you enjoy if you feel inclined to check them out:

Yes.

Soz ... I can't get rid of my pedantry.

Happy New Year and let's hope 2021 has a little less drama... an appropriate tune for the times:

Very nice, hardtack.  A Hoodoo Gurus tune, if I'm not mistaken?

Indeed it is.

Since shameless promotions seem to be ok, below is video of my son’s band. He’s the lead guitarist.

PS - Werridee, just loved your idea of infecting this topic with another “best of” collection - brilliant!

Absolutely LOVE this... it's like Folsom Prison Blues (melody) on steroids!  Your son's a [censored] good guitarist as well!!

PS. Nothing wrong with shameless self-promotion... it's the best way to get things out there.

Fans of "The Sopranos" tv series will be familiar with this song but maybe not this version. Intriguing band. Wish I'd discovered them years earlier.

Great stuff... I see these guys (North Mississippi Allstars) at Byron Bay Bluesfest a few years ago... another brilliant, yet largely unknown, band.

Q:  What did the dead blues singer have inscribed on his gravestone?

A:  "Well, I didn't wake up this morning."

Don’t know why I hadn’t come across Joe earlier but he does some great guitar work!

Here is another Joe classic performed at the Sydney Opera House

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
