The news from out west is that the next Liam Jurrah is about to arrive on the football scene.

Eighteen year old Waylen Manson is an 195 cm tall forward from a remote community in WA's Kimberley region and has only played a couple of games for the Claremont Colts in the WAFL - MANSON MAKES HIS MARK.

Claremont flew him down to Perth and he kicked 4.5 on debut. He has since been invited to the AFL Draft Combine and has a few recruiters in a lather.

The big question is whether, coming from a desert community, he would settle at a club so far from home although if this were an issue then there would be no better place than Melbourne for him.

I think we have invested enough in the indigeneous players at the moment. All have to stand up next year whom are on our list. We had a poor year from Davey, Liam was ok-Wona- we understand his troubles- but now we have to gain something back from our investment , Bennell- went OK and Jetta- just.These boys are inconsistant and we do not want any more at this point in time is my opinion.

That sounds like good logic.

From the article there may be a couple of other WAFL players worth a look as well. No doubt our recruiters are well aware of them.

We dont need flankers,periphery types, mid sized fowards, or talented indigeonous players.

Just a couple of solid rocks to add to our already impressive list of mid sized, skinnyish,loads of talent, but need a couple of big bodies to take the pressure off

I think JCB is making a point which is probably missed, but still valid.

Change the culture, & get the best. But then don't spoil them with a soft culture pervading our Indig boys.

We need 'Wheels' back around the club, tough & hardness personified.

Maybe we need to clear off some, who won't Go In.

I'm probably being precious, but it's a bit of a peeve of mine when players have to be "the next XYZ". Let the players be individuals without needing to have an instant comparison, and therefore enormous shoes to fill, before their careers have even started. Especially when being compared to a unique case like Liam Jurrah.

I think you are being precious. The comparison is to to arouse interest in us and basically describe the type of player by reference to a player we know. I am sure WJ is not expecting this bloke to be exactly like Liam. More than likely he will play exactly like Waylen Manson.

I've done a little more research on Manson. That Claremont Colts debut game  mentioned above when he kicked 4.5 was in WAFL round 21 which the Tigers won by 124 points. His full stats were 15 kicks 0 handballs 9 marks 1 tackle, 3 hit outs and 1  inside 50.

The following week, he flew in for a game with Claremont's reserves against East Fremantle and had a modest 4 possessions but kicked 2 goals.

He was back in the Colts for their Round 23 demolition of Peel Thunder and he again had 15 disposals but this time one of them was a handball. He also took 11 marks and kicked 8.4. I think that was all for Claremont in 2011 but it was enough to qualify him for the Draft Combine and we should take a close look at him then. 

No doubt you can have too much of one type of player, but we don't have too many 195cm tall forwards who can kick goals. One of the considerations in drafting this bloke would be the club's capacity to ensure that it can create the right environment for a player from a very different part of the country that has a climate and culture completely unlike his home.

We have a good track record with players from disparate regions but he would be yet another challenge and I wouldn't be shrinking away from that.

Besides which, with a name that sounds like a cross between a country and western singer and a mass murderer, he would have grown up tough, especially in the outback desert regions. 

I like the sound of him. What can I say?

Footnote: I also discovered during my researches that Claremont Colts have a player called Jacob Viney. With a name like that, I would rookie the kid and try to pull a switcheroo with another player who has a similar name just to get the kid into the team a year earlier.

Small crumbing forward Alroy Gilligan, young indigenous boy from Fitzroy Crossing was very impressive for Claremont's league side today in their win very clean with hands and feet made good decisions and unlike many of the indigenous forwards played the percentages to teamates in better positions rather than trying to kick GOY from every opportunity , a young boy 19/20yrs Tom Lee played well down back before going forward late 194cm and versatile, Kane Mitchell older midfielder was good again and should have won BOG, while fo Subiaco Kyle Horsley and David Bristow were both good through the middle in an othewise bad day for Subi

I think he was on an AFL list but delisted a year or two ago.

...and I thought he was James's Son & therefore a Pie.

I know Waylen personally as I did some volunteer work at the high school where he was boarding.

He is definitely one of the most athletic footballers I've seen with a vertical leap that is reminiscent of Nic Natanui (probably about 2 or 3 inches less)

 

He has a killer instinct that can almost border on being selfish, however the self belief that he will always kick the goal is something that can't be taught

 

One of the reasons he only played 3 games for Claremont in the lower grades was that he wanted to keep playing in the league up in his community until his team were out of finals

 

That being said he would need a very solid support system around him, as he does not speak Standard Australian English and would have a bit of trouble of living in the big city, although having Jurrah and Wonaeamirri among others around him would be very beneficial, and I've said in conversation more than once that Melbourne would be a great club for him to be drafted to.
