Time and again and even against the weaker teams we win in the ruck but we fail to turn that advantage into superior numbers in terms of clearances at the stoppages. Further, even when we do win those stoppages, we fail to produce the efficiency necessary to build winning scores, especially against the stronger clubs.

Clearly, this is a major area that needs to be addressed in terms of both personnel and technique. We have a new midfield coach and I think this is a start. Choko never seemed comfortable looking after the backs and I believe will be much better in his new role. A couple of genuine midfielders who are good at extracting the ball out of the middle would not go astray in helping him do his job.

Addressing our midfield issues has to be the first priority, particularly the efficency (or lack of) of our clearances. A good midfield will assist the backline because the opposition is not delivering it as well and help the forward line with superior service allowing the them to the dictate terms.

Forget key forwards or backs. Look at how we went against the top teams this year and we never got remotely close because our midfield was so far off the pace

for whatever reason but some quality clearance specialists with speed to break out would be a godsend.

Having said that, with the exception of Cyril Rioli and possibly Burgoyne, Hawthorn are exceptional at clearance work with a bunch of one paced inside mids

Davey is notably absent from most of these lists.

Forgive me but iv been overseas this whole year and have tried to catch as much as i can but find the davey diappearance strange.

Given that he disappeared in the midfield this year and given that he seems to go a bit missing in the hard games, wouldnt it be worth putting him back where he started up forward.

This way we have a dangerous small forward that we are missing to put some tackling pressure back in there. Id much prefer him performing in the forward line that going missing elsewhere.

Nice little insight to see how Neeld operates with his players, lets hope this scene can be recreated next year with them both in red&blue.

I reckon what happens with Davey next year will be interesting. I argued until I was blue in the face last year that he was crucial to our midfield due to his primary weapons being class use of the ball. The club put in some hard yards converting him in to a midfielder and until this year I'd have called it a success. At his best Davey is our best user of the ball and was capable of nailing the foot passes with the highest degree of difficulty. He can also time his runs through packs to perfection. Pacy midfielder who gets plenty of the ball, splits packs and can hit a target even when under extreme pressure - what's not to like?

Then this year happened. It's hard to imagine how he could possibly have had a worse year than this year. With his well documented "poor efforts" (being kind), his body language and his general poor form, he burned a great deal of credits with me. I still think there's a place for him in our midfield, but he's coming from a long way back after this year.

I think using him as a forward is wasting his primary weapons. BTW he played forward in a couple of games this year and stunk in those too.

I think we will just put him in the easiest spot to play on the ground - HBF.

I agree, let him play the role Davis played at Collingwood this year. My only concern on this one would be if he is as strong in the contest/overhead as Davis, but his pace and skill will allow him to play this role well...

Ive often thought HBF was his most effective and dangerous position. It gives he a lot of space to weave his magic. Agree with the idea this is an imprtant crossroad for the lad..

your a little all over the place mate, sucking on mummies [censored]? i think there comes a time when a new coach who comes from the outside of the club looking in, gets a chance to assess the club within the first couple of days, can critique the list as one would when judging them on their playing ability and that's what he's done.

Personally i think it's not accepting mediocre players, more than it is about getting them to play well, unfortunately brother, that's just the rule of the land. That's why not every player is chris judd or gary ablett, some are just better than others.

Having said all this no-one knows how many, or who he pointed out or didn't.
