Very interesting. Carries as much weight as anything else we've ever heard in the media, but I'd like to dream.:D

Maybe the one million per year offer should use on a person already with the club right now.

Like Tom Scully :)

It seems like we have lots of money on our bag right now.

No, I reckon we pay Scully what he's worth at the moment. In line with JT and Tappy. Spend the cash on a coach. No one on our list deserves that at the moment.

I'm not sure where this perception, that the money goes to one or the other, comes from.

The same amount will be paid in player salaries, regardless of the coaches' salaries.

Scully's situation will only change the way it is allocated amongst the players.

While Malthouse is 'the coach', i reckon that clarkson is the go...I don't know if Mick has it in him for one more, I put up a thread about age of premiership coaches that some people didn't particularly favour but this seems tantamount to David Parkin moving to Carlton - good move dees

Clarkson, for me, is the man. The coach we must have.

I find it unbelievable that some people say it wont happen, whilst others bat on for pages and pages about Malthouse who has stated publicly that he will not be coaching another football side next year.

Clarkson has said nothing of the sort and the exact type of tough, unrelenting mongrel our club needs. Malthouse however, the living personification of arrogance, lives on in your hearts as the coach we must snare.

No chance, I don't think.

Agree!......why would Clarkson leave a team he helped build? If the hawks offer him a contract, he'll take it.

Bad bad call. To pay Scully a million a year and Trengove 350 or whatever he is on would be an absolute disgrace and probably create a player divide. It always goes back to scully doesn't it. Offer the kid what we think he is worth at the end of the season like he has requested and whatever happens happens. If we could snag Clarkson I'd be the most excited about our future that I ever have been.

Providing there is not a massive difference in Salary. If the Dees want him and now have the money to throw at him and a long 5 year deal at the club he played for, who knows... just maybe. Really just like any other job offer, if he's offered a crap load more and the chance to get back with jimma and co he might just be tempted. I agree about the team he has built though, would be a mighty hard position to walk out on.

And James Hird repeatedly said last year he wasn't going to coach Essendon. Now look.

Honestly, if you find it unbelievable, good for you.

If the offer to Clarkson is true, it's a good move at precisely the right moment before anything is penned with the Hawks. Surely it must be worth some consideration, former club, 5 year lucrative offer, Lyon, Viney , Connolly - all acquaintances. But it would be hard to let go with what he has helped build and the superstars available on the Hawthorn list as well as Jeff on the way out.

It would be a great coup in netting a visionary coach who has his finger on the cusp when it comes to tactical game plans. Although it must be said, he has benefited from the quality players and good recruiting at his disposal.

Perhaps this is the real reason behind the 100% Demon campaign. I'm already donating, if we get Clarkson I'll double it.

I would love to have Clarkson at Melbourne, he is the one I have been hoping we could get.

I do not want Eade. I just dont rate him and am not a fan.

That being said though, do you think Clarkson would leave? He will get more money from us, and a longer contract, however, with the quality of the Hawthorn list you would think they will stay near the top of the ladder for a few more years. That would mean he would more than likely have another contract again from the Hawks.

You need to ask yourself, why would he leave the Hawks?

As much as I want him as a coach, and I am ecstatic about the approach we are allegedly taking, I cant see it happening.

I am thinking that we will most likely have someone like Neeld at the helm next year, who I would be more than happy with. I hope I am wrong though and the Clarkson comes over to us!

Kennett going helps the hawks ability to retain him.

The question for him maybe whether its a long term proposition.

The hawks will not offer 5 years.

He will remember the pressure he was under after they slumped after the premiership year.

He might relish building a dynasty as against a closing window for the Hawks.

Then there is the Bomber Thompson factor, the opportunity to go back to his spiritual home with his best mates and work was just too tempting.

That said they are still in the window and he might want to make the most of it.

We can think of all sorts of reasons but what I like about this is that it says we are not going to be left wondering and yes we are serious about getting the best not just on offer but the best where ever they may be.

It may make Malthouse rethink his position.

I like it and even if it fails its a great strategy for rebuilding the club.

"whatever it takes"

This will have a significant impact on the playing group knowing we are not going to settle for whatever we can get.

Though not a complete impossibility, I'd be surprised if Clarkson made the switch. I am however mildly comforted by the fact the club is being quite ambitious with their pursuit of a new coach.

Where did the club get the money to offer 1 mil a year (as reported)?

Would surely have to be tempting for Clarkson, notwithstanding that he is charge of a vastly superior team at the moment.

Caro must have some A-grade sources on the board at Melbourne. The Hun hasn't said a thing.

I just love the fact we've shown some chutzpah and made this offer. Proving we're not afraid to lay the cards on the table. Also show's Mick what he could expect if he wanted.

Great call Adam! Head coach is most important at this stage!

If Clarkson is a true professional and Melbourne throws the kitchen sink at him, he will take it. Issues about lists quality etc. over a 5 year deal - which is a lifetime offer for someone of his age - will not/should not count in his decison. Pickering will be telling him the same. This issue is a professional one, not that emotional - thats the angle for us fans to take.

The cash comes from the Board's resolve, quite correctly, not to pay Scully an outrageous salary which would destabilse the team.

Whatever happens this move says to me the Board/G. Lyon and Co. are seriously on this case for next year.

I'm excited that there's a firm hand on the tiller.

Caroline has a knack of gathering some information, that others struggle to get.

You have to wonder if she obtained it through her FC colleague or not.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
