No just surprised that a senior coach who is still in his position would blab to someone that he doesnt know from a bar of soap about a position that wasn't even vacant.

I agree why you little about looking at clubs that have been recent winners. I wonder if Worsfold would consider leaving West Coast? Now that they are on the rise again he may want to stick with what he started, and leave once the older guys retire like Cox and Embley

Not a critism just a question.

My problem is all the potential/ available Experienced coachs do little for me

but I think we do need someone with experience.

It seems to me that Williams and Laidley want the job

however I am not excited by either.

I'm very lukewarm on Laidley, Eade and Choco Williams (unlikely anyway, imho).

I don't think we have a realistic chance of Malthouse, Roos, Bomber Thompson or Al Clarkson.

Matthews, Pagan, Blight, Walls, etc, etc are well past it.

That leaves highly rated assistants.

Hinkley, Neeld and Sanderson have all been very highly rated, involved with successful programs (Collingwood & Geelong), and all have been in AFL coaching for long enough to be ready to embark on a senior gig.

Out of the 3, I think Neeld on the surface looks to be more the type of coach we need.

I favour Hinkley and Neeld because I have a few mates that have played for both and I hear exceptional things (about both).

Out of those 2, I think I'd favour Hinkley, purely because I think he'd have a wider range of AFL contacts, and I think that's important when selecting a coaching staff, as he'll likely have to do.

He'd also give us the inside track on recruiting GC Suns kids looking to return to Victoria.

I'm obsessed with us acquiring either Prestia or Caddy.

Sanderson looks good, and I've had limited experience in his presence, but I just dont get a vibe off him like the other 2.

Doesn't have quite the presence, imo.

Leon Cameron, hasn't been involved in an ultimately successful program, to my knowledge.

Adam Simpson has been named as a bolter, but I don't buy it.

Scott Burns has potential, but I don't think he's been in the coaching caper long enough.

Guys like Alan Richardson, Gavin Brown, Brendan McCartney all seem to me that they are career assistants.

That's my take.

Until clarkson signs we have a good chance. He played at there demons.viney was his assistant during the 08. We have a great list. Melbourne need to spend some cash. At worst we can drive the price up on the hawks

My mate was in a box at the Collingwood Essendon game last week, sitting between Wayne Carey and Rodney Eade. After a few beers he managed to get a bit of information out of Eade and it was that:

- Eade is applying for the Melbourne job and pretty much accepts that he won't be re-signed by WB

- Eade is very confident that Leon Cameron (Hawks assistant) will take over at the Dogs next season

Spoken to Sam Mitchell - he said that Adam Simson is fantastic, really rates him.

My preferences:

The only senior coach I'm interested in is Malthouse. It may be doubtful that he'll be available, but if he has interest it's a no brainer to appoint him.

Clarkson* will stay at Hawthorn. I don't want Eade, or Choco. Matthews won't and he's now a relic of the past. Roos won't. Laidley has had his crack, so I'd say no. He's tactically very good, but there's a flaw in his personality. It really just leaves Malthouse, but he's probably a long shot.

I know that many at the club think we need an experienced coach, but if there's not the right one don't try and make a round peg fit a square hole.

If we can't get Malthouse the untried coach I'd like us to pursue is Brendan McCartney. I've been interested in his career for a while. His coaching credentials are impeccable. He was Mark Thompson's right hand man during his entire reign at Geelong. In a very short time James Hird has said that he's the most impressive coach he's seen in football - extraordinary praise. Tom Harley speaks glowingly of him. He looked after the defence at the Cats before over-seeing a midfield that produced two Brownlow Medallists. His mantra is to have an uncompromising attitude towards contested footy. If you can't win contested footy you won't play in his team. But he also has an amazing ability to develop relationships with his players, while being honest about their footy. He sounds a great coach if a club has the balls to appoint someone who doesn't have an AFL playing career behind them.

Yeah, good question.

But for instance, the McCartney article talks about how great he is at spending copious amounts of one-on-one time with the players, and it's key to his success.

Surely as head coach, he won't have that time, and therefore will be missing one of the keys to his success.

I believe that being a very successful assistant coach requires a different skill set to being a very successful head coach.

Problem is, I doubt we'd be able to lure McCartney as an assistant.

In the early 80's we signed the "best available coach" with a proven record of grand final wins. He coached for 5 years for no finals leading up to just before the 'Swooper' Northey era.

The "cheap" coach, Swooper, oversaw a miracle run of wins in '87 to firstly make the finals from a hopeless ladder position, then to play a preliminary final. He introduced a gameplan called "kick the f...in' thing", as opposed to his predecessor, long and through the corridor.

I agree. In many ways Barassi had laid similar groundwork to Bailey in terms of getting a decent playing list together. Swooper inherited the list and got them playing strong and disciplined team football. IMO, that's exactly what we need right now.

Clarko is the only one of the senior coaches currently being touted who enthuses me, and I think the prospects of getting him to Melbourne are remote. I'd be very happy with one of the new breed of assistants currently being discussed (Neeld, Hinkley, Sanderson and as a roughie, Bassett). Please make the right choice Garry!

We keep mentioning the same people who might or might not want us then everybody starts on about assistant coaches as that is a rule or something. What about Gary Ayers, he has coached AFL teams to losing grand finals, been continually coaching till now in the VFL and doing a great job there.

He played footy as a tough nut but then did Barmly, but he has done wonders at port and how many flags has he got[i dont know]. At the moment port are unbeaten as a stand alone side, maybe just maybe we need to pull a rabbit out of the hat and go to somebody like Gary Ayers.

Lots of coaches have coached at AFL level. When people say they want an "experienced coach", what they actually want is an "experienced [and successful] coach". What they don't mean is a guy who has already had two shots at it and failed dismally both times.

Next someone will suggest we hire Terry Wallace.
