No, it's nothing like that at all. Speed, unlike height, can be affected over time owing to several factors. If you're comparing him to the best onballers in the comp (ie. have a look at the way Cooney went about it on Friday night) then no, he's not quick. He's by no means slow, but certainly not in that class. Yet we pay him as one.

And to the poster who says he's our best offensive weapon, he's kicked 99 goals in 122 games at 0.8 goals a game. Hardly world-beating numbers.

Col has the skill to play well on a regular basis, and i would suggest that this year has probably been his best. Hardly world beating numbers sure, but he does a lot of grunt work around the ground. Probably the best kick at goal on the run in our team, and is generally a solid finisher... I highly doubt he would leave, but he probably deserves to be one of our highest paid.

Would be hugely disappointed to lose Col, a great player who must be signed.

Yes it's good to have generals out there, but not for every single player.

I want a bloke who is going to go up and actually hold onto a grab. Who can kick it from 50. He would run through a brick wall if you kicked a ball at the right hight/speed at it.

Every club has players out of contract. Players will be holding off discussion until the CBA is negotiated. Why would you sign now if you think your club might get an increase in the salary cap.

Ultra important player to our structure. Having a down few weeks, but will get back into form before long. Imperative that we sign him up for the rest of his playing days.

His form spikes too much for me and that probably goes hand in hand with his inability to hold down a regular position in the midfield as he doesn't have the engine or capacity to gut-run. Still wouldn't trade him, but also wouldn't make him a largesse offer. Would rather give the $ to Scully / Trengrove.

If we hope to be this, he is a non negotiable. Also like the point that someone raised, if we lose him and replace him with a 18 year old, our team loses a heap of experience and bulk. Keep him!

This is probably his strong suit. On his tod he gets found out somewhat. Maybe he just doesnt revel in the climate of expectation. But given support or rather having HIM in support of ilk such as a more experienced team of ( dare I say it ) Scully-Trengove-Gysberts- Tapscott-McKenzie then he could be that loose Cannon of whom you speak.. i.e the game-breaker. There's been glimpses without the whole show to date.

Wouldn't be getting too excited about this one just yet but somewhat surprised he is out of contract. Football department have had plenty of time to work this issue. You don't let one of our best if not the best senior bloke on the list walk out the door.

That's true but as you have already pointed out elsewhere - we need to project forward to our flag core and pay accordingly. I'm not convinced he's in the top echelon (Watts, Frawley, Trengove, Scully, Gysberts?, McKenzie?), probably second tier for me (Sylvia, Grimes (too often injured to be in the top), Garland, Davey, Jamar). On that note (trying to aviod turning this into a Scully thread) - we need to pay players according to their echelon.

That might mean giving GWS targets a "sign-on" front-loaded contract and a more reasonable on-going annual amount which is sustainable to other players at their level. It's unfortunate for players like Watts and Frawley who are out of the GWS window but that's probably the fairest way to work it. Scully might get $2.8M over 4 years at $450K/year (a sustainable amount) + $1M sign-on bonus to ward off the extraordinary GWS raid. Same for Trengove next year. It relies on being able to front-load inside the TPP. Sylvia might get $1.7M over 3 years as $400K/year + $500K "sign-on". Players outside the top two echelons don't qualify for sign-on.

It's not perfect but it's got to be better than paying them $700K/year and having to match that for all players at the same level and also have them think that or better is what they'll automatically get in their next contract.

Replace Sylvia with Scully in virtually every sentence and the whole thread still works.

Anyway...

- If he wants to go due to lack of a deal, he has to be traded or go to GWS. GWS can't take Scully AND Sylvia in free agency so that means that one will probably stay.

- If GWS take Scully and MFC can't agree a deal, he can nominate for the pre-season, where he'd almost certainly end up at GWS anyway.

I reckon he'll stay. There are 'attitude issues' with him that other clubs will frown on due to his chequered past. Of the non-GWS teams, you'd only be looking at a Freo/Sydney/Aints middle band that might want him - but I doubt it. Sydney aren't going to make their list challenge for a flag by adding Sylvia. Freo, when fit, are in better shape without him. Aints already have brilliance in the middle so he'd be a 23rd man.
