Depends how many camera's are at the game. A Close up on a pack situation can show you a lot more than just watching from a far in the grand stand.

I love the Vibe at a live game, and yes if i can get there i will....But sometimes to see what is going on at the fall of the ball the Close up Camera lens will show a lot more.

What you do miss on the TV is the up and down Ground structures of each team, particularly from kick outs and boundry throw ins...

So each form of watching has the pos & neg.

Your assessment of the FD was i thought harsh and not well thought out....and let's just say at least 8 weeks Premature JCB.

Our leaders are still Babies....Fact. Our present Captain is not a natural Leader......is that Dean's fault, or Josh Mahoney's??

All fair points BUT..YOUR POINT RE..Your assessment of the FD was i thought harsh and not well thought out....and let's just say at least 8 weeks Premature JCB.is indeed stupid..in particular if you read my opening THREE words of the thread being at year's end.. GOT IT..?

So why write it at all if there is still 8 weeks to go before any decision is made..How do yopu know that Josh Mahoney is no good???

He was a genius against Essendon....You wrote this original thread as a VENT, without thinking it thruogh? The Cocoa & a lie down was the better option.B)

Why make ridiculous comments like this??? Could not be further from the truth Artie....

A relative idiot. Maybe a poor choice of words - any garden variety VFL assistant coach.

You might not agree, but they are simple concepts and I know what I'm talking about.

Gaining Advantages in AFL footy is by no means an idiot Job. Sure the Buck stops with the Head Coach, But a Good assistant is worth Gold.

You may Consider them Garden Gnomes but i sure don't.

There are many hours where the assistants are the teachers, after the coach has over seen.

glad i don't work for you Artie if that is your attitude.

I don't understand how anyone can say Scott West is good while Josh Mahoney is not. How would they know without being on the inside.

The ratio of goals to forward 50 ratio is actually pretty good over the journey but we haven't got it in there much. Wouldn't that be a midfield issue?

Nope.

Only need playing credentials to be a great assistant. Scott West. Great assistant.

Mahoney wasn't a great player so that means he's no good. Brilliant and well thought out there.

It's all relative, ya bloody drama queen.

It's hardly a simple job, but in comparison it is.

Good assistants are extremely valuable, but the basic skills aren't the sole focus of their role - ball movement ant tactics require a different level of understanding.

And the top job is that much more complex.

But you have completely lost sight of what is being discussed here.

It's the importance and complexity of the different areas to be taught that are the focus, and the ability to understand and teach those areas based on playing experience, not the coaches roles themselves.

Don't tell me what i have lost sight of....it is you who is belittling the job of the assistant job, not i.

Nope, you're still missing the point.

If anything, I'm belittling some of the roles of an assistant, saying that any idiot can do them, and that other roles they perform are much more complex and valuable.

It's really not hard.

No i am not missing the point...i am disagreeing with you Artie!!! Large difference.

You are inferring that many jobs an assistant carry out are no more useful than witches hats, which is wrong.

It is as you say not hard to work out what i am saying.

I'd like to see footy department overhaul.

I think another 35-50% expenditure in the footy department would be good

especially sports science areas and recovery as well as injury rehab/prevention

and considering Trengove's encounters with the tribunal and our teams inconsistency with tackles

I'd like to see a full time tackling coach.

With all our new sponsors getting on board a footy department sponsor would be good

This is the area where difference is made. The footy department is our biggest gap between other clubs

You're a very frustrating person when you contradict yourself with such conviction.

So you are saying basically saying that you or i could just walk into the club and become an assistant as "any idiot" could do most of it??

Those are your words Artie....i am merely giving our current assistants some credit for what they are doing. Not saying that there cannot be some improvements...but i do give them some serious respect.

Where are my contradictions by the way?

You're misrepresenting my words because you like an argument.

- I have already clarified that "any idiot" was relative.

Obviously all assistant coaches are not equal and if all are rated on a scale of 1 to 10, those who score < 3 are the relative "idiots" I spoke of.

- I didn't say they could do "most of it", but referred to certain aspects of teaching skills.

I can teach somehow how to spoil and play with an arm across. They are called the "basics" because they are... basic.

- You're implying that I don't give them respect. This is not true.

I just explained that I think the more difficult and important aspects of their role revolve around ball movement, rather than teaching basic skills.

- Your contradictions are bleedingly obvious -- go back and read through the lat few posts.

I am not misrepresenting your words at all...It is you that are inferring that a lot of the assistants are "idiots" and that a lot of their jobs anyone could do.

I merely find that very disrespectful, so i am pulling you up Artie.

Show me where i am contradicting this inside this thread....Walk the walk mate.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
