WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY

Featured Replies

Ive seen enough to suggest that at no 3 he is overs BUT he is certainly top 10. Therefore to pay slightly overs for him would not faze me one little bit. He is grunt personified a more polished version of Chunky Jones and has massive upside Just think of him as a at this stage a developing combo of Mc Veigh, Thompson, and Swan and you might get the idea of what we have the opportunity of securing this type which we desperately need!

A must in my book!

I listened to that and I didnt take that from his comments. To me it was more that they would have to work out whether he is worth a pick 3 at that time or whether they could use a live pick 2 for a better choice (than a tough midfielder with uncomprimising loyalty to a club on the bottom of the ladder).

Think about it this way:

1. Viney is the only top rounder that has any loyalty to our club

2. Viney is the best and most developed midfielder out of the top rounders

3. the Suns have about three or four players trying to weasle their way home last year and this year. Would they risk their second pick on a bloke who through all intents and purposes is likely to do the same?

Its all a bluff - wait and see!

Hope you're right NSC, I'd hate for us to fark up the Viney situation, I want to see him in the red and blue next year.

Why not?

Take away the fact that Melbourne has the right to take Jack under the father son rule and he is just another young player looking to get drafted that has signalled his intentions that he would like to stay at home as opposed to uprooting his life and moving interstate.

It happens all the time. Natanui, Wingard are all examples of players indicating to interstate clubs that it's their preference to stay at home. I just don't see how it is any different?

Because it is a lie. Jack Viney will go anywhere to play AFL and that is that.

And how does this hair-brained idea work with trying to stop them from 'dummy bidding' and forcing us to use Pick 3. If we are consorting enough with Jack to get him to lie to GC, why would that then get them to back off? I would say 'the kid is trying to pull a fast one and the Dees have put him up to it - they will take him at 3 and let's make them.'

Has anything happened yet?

Relevance?

Like anything not happening has deterred Demonland from dissecting the negative ramifications of the hypothetical.

I should put that in a tweet...

I think I said this in another thread, though it seems the Dees are keen to pick up 1 gorilla and 3 mids with its first 4 picks this year.

At the moment if GC do not bid for Viney we look at getting something like

#3 Toumpas/Wines, #4 Hogan, #13 Wellingham/Garlett/Mcrae/Kennedy and #26 Viney

If they do Bid then something like may be feasible

#3 Viney, #4 Toumpas/Wines, #13 Wellingham/Garlett/Mcrae/Kennedy and #26 Dawes

Both results net us 3 mids (including Viney) and a Gorilla forward.

I doubt we would pass up on him though it would mean that we have to take Dawes instead of Hogan.

nothing will "HAPPEN" til monday.

Why would it be lying if he does want to stay in Victoria, he should be telling them the truth which is likely to be that he wants to stay here. What's wrong is if he comes out with the 'i'm happy to play anywhere' rubbish if he's not equally happy to uproot his life and head to QLD, which it's hard to believe he would be.

On a side note... just curious to know which clubs will be bidding on Joe Daniher? if the reports are correct then he would have otherwise been the #1 pick - but I haven't heard anything about GWS, Gold Coast or anyone else putting in bids for him.

Is it conceivable that all clubs will just assume other clubs will bid on Daniher, to the point where they all forget to bid and Essendon are able to nab him with their second pick in the draft?

Team with the pick before them will not forget to bid

These are professionals.

What life? He is 18.

If any kid is equipped to uproot his life and go across the country to play AFL - it is Jack Viney.

I don't know how any reasonable Dees fan can escape or evade that fact. I am pretty damn sure that other clubs won't.

I don't quite understand your logic

Do you know Jack Viney personally?

Good post olisik

I hope we don't have to take Viney at 3 but if GC do nominate him I reckon its 99% certian we take him at 3..... I know the club are playing hardball with Viney to scare off GC but I can't see JV not being a Dee...

And anyone who thinks JV will just walk out on GC for the MFC after 2 years (if drafted by GC) are surely dreaming. If I was JV and was passed on by a club who promised to take me, after the 2 years in the system I'd chase the coin, why show loyalty??

I really hope the karma bus smashes Gold Coast in the face at some point in the future.

Friends and family? Of course he is equipped to, but that's not the point, it's whether he wants to. i don't know any reasonable Dees fan that would think he would not rather stay in Victoria. And he should let GC know about that fact.

Ok so what they need to do is stop p**s farting around and contact GC to work this thing out

Heres a hypothetical -

Melb - Look we are taking Viney and we really dont want you to bid so lets help each other out.

GC - How can you help us?

Melb - Well Caddy is leaving and we will end up with a much better offer than your gonna get elsewhere say pick 13? Geelong etc wont be able to offer you that.

GC - I'm listening...

Melb - Ok heck we will throw in a Petterd as well

GC - Ok deal we wont bid

Simple everyone wins GC get better renumeration for Caddy, we get Viney at 26 and everyone is happy!

And we get done for draft tampering and lose all our picks for the next 5 years and get fined 3 million (we're not GWS, we can't just do whatever we want). Everyone still happy?

Go and read a few Viney threads if you are interested because...

1. Can not use comp picks on Viney - Pick 4 and 13.

2. Bidding is done at the start of trade week, the MD is done two weeks later.

Do you ever get sick of repeating the same thing continuously?

:-)

This sort of stuff goes on all the time. As long as its all done discretely then i dont think it would be that hard to work out a deal.

We have effectively signaled this through the media aver the past couple of days...

I.e. MFC interested in Caddy and Toy + we don't think JV is worth pick 3...

This sort of stuff goes on all the time. As long as its all done discretely then i dont think it would be that hard to work out a deal.

Exhibit A: Veale deal.

Exhibit A: Veale deal.

I'm pretty sure after that happened the AFL came out and said they wouldn't allow that type of deal to go on in the future

Sick of people saying this. You got some examples and proof to back that up? No, you don't.

So would they investigate as to why GCS would not bid on JV? No.

If Scotty Clayton is smart he will not risk pick 2 and not call the Demons bluff. There's 15 probably 16 other clubs that would love Clayton to make the call, but he's responsible for his own list. Why risk it and in two years find Viney wanting to go back to Melbourne. That would be a waste of a pick.

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG to face the Tigers in their annual Blockbuster on ANZAC Eve for the 10th time. The Dees will be desperate to reignite their stuttering 2025 campaign and claim just their second win of the season. Can the Demons dig deep and find that ANZAC Spirit to snatch back to back wins?

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.

The Dees are back at the MCG on Thursday for the annual blockbuster ANZAC Eve game against the Tigers. Can the Demons win back to back games for the first time since Rounds 17 & 18 last season? Who comes in and who goes out?
