Why the hell was my post taken down about Nathan Jones' tweet saying "rot in hell osama"

This should never have been taken down, this forum is for free speech for god sakes.

My guess is because it has bugger all to do with football, and in all honesty is a drastic overreaction on your part when Jonesy's reaction is shared with the majority of the western world. Take the moral high ground in your own quiet time and place.

It has a lot to do with football when he represents the club. Even if it does not it should have been moved rather than deleted. It was deleted purely because a moderator did not agree with it. It is not moral high ground, it is my values. This is whats wrong with our culture, there is no respect for other people and their beliefs. You are just disregarding it because it is not what you believe which is completely wrong.

Most moderators on this forum do a great job and only delete material that breaks a COC rule. And they usually offer an explanation as to the reason for the moderation. Some, though, may have succumbed to the influence the moderation title has on their ego and use their 'power' to moderate outside of what is expected according to forum rules. You get this with any forum. If you want total free speech, best start your own forum and make yourself a moderator.

On a side note, Nathan Jones is entitled to his opinion, just as player X would be who beleive that Osama is little more than a scapegoat who has probably been dead for years. You can't really complain about moderating when you are, in essence, trying to moderate what Nathan Jones can and cannot say on his own personal social networking account.

It hasn't been deleted, the topic was closed (locked) and is still visible. From the reaction to those who replied, it was indeed ridiculous, which would support the mod who locked it.

There are so many points in the OP I could pick up on, like the fact that this form isn't for free speech, the fact the thread hasn't even been deleted and the fact that the moderator who locked the thread posted in the thread with a reason for locking it.

Since some of this has already been covered, I figure I'll just make a comment on this idea of free speech on forums, since it comes up on every messageboard sooner or later. This forum isn't for free speech - it's a privately 'owned' message board and whoever owns it can do whatever they want.

If whoever owns this board decided we could only post about chocolate ice-cream you'd have no recourse. As citizens in Australia we don't even have a right to free speech (and even if you want to argue that we have an implied right to free speech you'll acknowledge it's limited).

Yes, a pretty ironic set of circumstances. However, I think it's coherent to argue for 'free speech' as a citizen while arguing against the publication of certain types of speech on a Twitter account when you're representing an organisation and have your tweets published on that organisation's website.

(Since people don't tend to read posts too closely at times, I feel the need to point out that in this post I am neither advocating or objecting to the aforementioned view).

I want to see Nath Jones playing footy to the best of his ability.... not talk 140 charachters on a man who dealt in death and who is now himself dead.

It worries me some of you can not see the difference. He is a role model and represents the club.

I'm with Samsara on this. Mr Morton it seems to me like you are advocating for free speech, then trying to censor Nathan Jones at the same time.

I'd be more concerned if that sort of comment came from the offical MFC twitter account.

Mate, no you are not alone, I posted a thread along similar lines following our weak effort over in the west. From research melbourne has 18 players using twitter, leading the league, whilst collingwood and geelong were up there so was port adelaide!!!! need i say more

My point is that these players seem to be seduced by the notion of celebrity. We really dont give a crap about their thoughts on political events, where they eat or what they brought recently, they only have our adulation for their feats on the football field.

My advice to the players is that they will only ever be remembered for how they played the game and premierships, once you have finished playing, you are cast aside for the next batch of recruits. Best to leave a legacy through you actions on the field as the game will chew you up and spit you out.
