I noticed in the first half of the pies v dogs game that the dogs forwards stayed at home inside their 50 and made the pies defenders accountable and not able to push up and implement the forward press.

Should Bailey just instruct his forwards to "stay at home" so we can at least have someone to kick to going forward and inturn make the crows defenders accountable and unable to properly implement the press?.

I don't understand why any club doesn't do this. It HAS to eliminate the press to some degree, as it will, as you said, make the defenders more accountable. The Eagles did it against us - how many times did they have forwards on their own in their F50?

Not sure about anyone else, but this press crap really annoys me. It makes the game look very ugly, and that's not just becuase we can't do it!

this is a good idea on paper, yet when a team presses 22 people in their forward half and you keep your 6 forwards in your own forward half this leads to many loose players around the ball, and to get it out of your defensive 50 you basically need it to be close enough to one on one. it will work a few times, but everytime you are under pressure trying to clear it, a wall of opposition players will effectively push the ball straight back in, thus the frontal press is effective, the best way to go through it is one on one making all opposition players accountable up the field, getting it over the boundary line 65-70 m up from your forward 50, tempo footy (controlling the football with chips and switching until there is a break, or you have to boot it long up the line) or break the lines with quick hit ups and give offs leading to a fast break, but leaving anymore than 2 players back will lead to an impossible matchup in the zone, so that is why it is not often done.

Perhaps not home, but maybe there or abouts. In its simplicity, this idea has merit, but would take a bit of jigging to be effective. I can't say so much last week because we were rarely kicking forwards, but usually I get quite frustrated with watching us struggle to get the ball out of the back, and then once we do there is no-one there to collect it.

I like the idea of having some fowards actually staying in their position. I know it is a radical idea to actually have a forward playing as a forward!!

The main reason why teams have all the players up the ground and in the contest is to have even numbers at a contest.

For example, the dogs had 3 players staying at home while collingwood only had 2 defenders near them, when the ball was 100 metres away. The extra pies player went to the contests and due to the extra player they would win more of the contested ball than the dogs.

You need to have great faith that you will win the ball when outnumbered and hope you can get the ball to your forwards.

That being said, I want us to have 1 player, probably LJ or Greeny, in the forward 50 at all times, preferably near the goal square to lead up when we get the ball, and then another forward, be it Petterd, Watts, Bate etc leading up from the 50 to the wing to provide an option. It is so frustrating to have nobody to give the ball to when we win the ball in the back half.

Surely LJ would win one out against most defenders with the ball in the air or on the ground...

It seems as if the AFL has slipped an offside rule in and told the clubs but not the supporters....
