If Newton made the same degree of improvement in performance that Sylvia has then Newton would be a good player.

If I improved as much as Sylvia I would be a good player, but I'm no good and have shown nothing to suggest that I can.

Newton has not done anything on the field to suggest that he can, unlike Sylvia that showed plenty early.

You are right about one thing, he always looks lost (Actually you are right about everything except your opening sentence).

He's probably a really nice guy, but how long is long enough?

7 years is enough to show something, and he has shown nothing.

My opinion is Newton is a waste of MCC money. We do not have to fill all rookie spots. Including travel, gear, super, workcover etc, a rookie on $50k might cost the clubabout $100k, (about 750 members), I would much rather my membership dollars go into equipment and facilities than Newton. If he was the best option for a rookie spot, we should have not filled the spot.

This is where we need to stop the thread. The guy has one last chance to try to resurrect his AFL career on the back of good form last year.

I also don’t think that because they play for the MFC, or make decisions on behalf of the MFC that they cannot be questioned. If that was the case we would still have Gardner running the place with McNamee and Robbo sitting at full forward.

I think Sylvia had shown plenty in his early years at Melbourne, he received a rising star nomination in his second year. He has not been consistent due to injury/attitude, but I believe he had shown enough in his early years to persevere with.

Sylvia was crippled with OP, had a crappy attitude and didn't deliver. We were talking about minor degrees of performance. We invested pick 3 on him and he was more value to us persevering with him that trying to trade him with his medical history.

Indeed his development was stymied somewhat by the presence of Sauntner and others at Sandy. After 5 years on the main list, he was relegated to the rookie list. He is a fringe player who if we get something out of then great then if we dont then we lose as much as we have lost on countless other rookies who have not cut it. While your argument on cost is persuasive then we should not take any rookies at all unless we know that they will definitely made the grade. Its unrealistic I know but Nerwton is not the worst rookie we have had on the list over the years. The rookie list has strong element of punting for the future. And in my opinion, those who gripe 7 year line are sweating the small stuff.

I think over the years Ruckman can take longer to develop, and I think that Jamar showed the ability to win the taps and mark the ball at an AFL level early in his career, just didn't have the fitness and didn't get enough of the ball, but showed something, is 200cm and was a regular in the best 22. Back in 2006 Jamar played 22 games in the season. Newton is a 193 forward that can't get a game and has not once in 7 years shown anything that indicates that he will make it. I don't see the similarities.

For every Jamar that comes good, there are a heap of Paul Johnsons that don't. I don't want the MFC to hang onto every player who is clearly not up to it just because Jamar is.

Jamar is listed at 198cm on the MFC website so hopefully the shrinkage does not hard his development. And WOW I did not know 5cm of height would impact your development as a football. Maybe height is not relevant. Hmmm.
