Listen to the interview with Joel Hocking on the MFC website. May have let slip one of the new numbers in the very last thing he says.

The real theme is that our highest draft picks have been given numbers that are relevant to our history. Watts was given 4 with a Norm Smith theme behind it, Trengove 9 for Neitz, and Scully 31 for Barassi.

Just to further debunk your theory, last year our earliest available number was 5, which went to our third pick in Gysberts.

I don't think its necessarily the lower number.

IMO there's no difference between a number in the single figures, or the teens and even low 20s and 30s.

The issue is the historical importance of the number in respect to our club.

what did he let slip??

Watch the video and read the thread title. That could help :)

Has Bennell done enough to warrant a guernsey promotion to no.7? Not sure about that ... still think he's got several gears of improvement in him that we need to see first.

Is that a joke?

If not, you're not that great at identifying talent...

Not a joke, no. I agree he's talented. He's got the silk and flashiness, which we all love watching.

But I'd like to see more than that from him. The off-the-ball stuff, harder tackling, willingness to take a hit, that kind of stuff.

Not convinced yet. Hoping to see him raise his game to another level in '011.

Maybe you have higher expectations for being awarded a low number.

To be honest, I don't think there's much in it.

I wouldn't be handing low numbers to a fringe player like a Cheney or McNamara, but I think Bennell deserves one.

Pretty sure the club asked him if he had a preference. He chose #4 because it was available and it's always been his number, vaguely remember him saying it somewhere.

I think Bennell in 2011 will be classified as a fringe player- definately not a straight forward pick in the top 18.I'd give McKenzie No7.

Yes but he did improve throughout the year I thought and after being dropped. He looked soft early days when not going when it was his turn (Collingwood game sticks out), but became more consistent as the year went on.

But it would be good to see the same rate of improvement and truelly entrench himself in the side for 2011 as his pace and agility will be a real weapon. Needs to improve his goal kicking too as he misses too many at this stage.

Jamie Bennell will be an absolute star for this club. I am convinced of this - his class is obvious.

He will just continue to improve with more games under his belt. Fully deserves no. 7 if he gets it.

I find it funny that you can say that he has not shown enough, or is soft, to be able to wear number 7.

Why then do other players get a smaller number before they have even played a game for the club?

Personally I dont think the lower the number means you are any better or that you need to be a certain standard to get a lower number, I just think it would be great if the players wearing any number for the club love wearing the number and play bloody well in it.

A number is just a number, it is what you do when wearing it that people remember you for.

Jordie was given No 13 as a reward for loyalty. I don't think he'll be changing to 7.

Dont say that! I proudly added 13 to my back last season..

Cook #7

Howe #23

Blease #17

Bennell #32

I hope your numbers aren't granted based on a player's value... you have three virtually untried players rated ahead of Bennell who has shown more than a few glimpses of brilliance and is likely to step up to the next level next year. He is thoroughly deserving of the #7 based on any criteria the club may want to apply. Put simply, he IS going to be a star!

Id happily offer #7 to Bennell.

Needs another year or 2 before he consolidates himself fully, but he tears it up on the track apparantly.

Great sign of confidence if they give him 7!

Happy with 7 to Jimmy Bennell. There is so much potential and attributes that could see him become a very damaging midfielder.

He goes missing too often but ideally this will change in 2011 and a break out year awaits...in the # 7. The Joel Hocking 'slip' sounded like it was meant to be said.

Ah a voice of good sense and reason.

Talk about much ado about nothing.

If you go by some posters here, Simon Buckley at No 1 must have been a gun.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
