Assistant Coach Replacement for Sean Wellman

Featured Replies

Chris Scott is said to be looking at a role with a club in Melbourne if he doesn't get the top job at Geelong (unlikely).

Very highly rated.

We should make a big play for him to replace Wellman.

Would be an excellent pick up for our backline.

Is this something you made up E25?

No Scott has said he wanted to come back to Melbourne - he did not say MFC. A real long shot Scott to us- but you never know- I think Laidley would be far better. But we hope to gain a good quality one.I've heard strong rumours that John Barker maybe heading our way..stay tuned...or maybe Serhat Temel to do our Forward coaching..Just rassin with the last bit..

I didn't make it up, but I can't remember where I read it.

He's obviously going for the Geelong job, but if he doesn't get it, he is said to want to find a job at a Melbourne club to further his coaching education and reputation.

I don't see why that Melbourne club can't be us.

I have also heard rumuors that Scott is interested in the defensive assistant role if he misses the gig at

Geelong. Is apparently keen to gain further experience at another club in melbourne till such time another senior coaching role becomes available.

Which is his ultimate goal. I have heard he may have had a pre-emptive interview/meeting before the squad left for china.

Just have to wait and see post China trip.

Would be a great replacement. Love 'em or Hate them those Scott Brothers always demanded Respect & i would think in coaching terms nothing has changed.

I like his junkyard dog, footy outlook that he played with.

I am sure that there are a number of contenders with excellent coaching credentials (several of whom are mentioned here). To me, a critical criterion will be the ability of the selected assistant to work comfortably and harmoniously with Bails and the rest of the coaching team as we develop and refine our game plans and tactics. We wouldn't want egos getting in the way of teamwork, and I just wonder about one or two of the potential candidates on this score (based on nothing more than a gut feelings).

Could be on the cards, seeing as a little birdy (tweet) told me Hinkley will be announced as coach of Geelong on Monday.

What about Gary Lyon? I realise he played in the forward line but Gary knows his stuff and I think our backline need more a manager rather than a coach. I figure with viney coming back to the club it's time to bring in more ex champs.

i think the only prob with this would be the media and bails seeing it as gary being the next coach.

kinda similar to the buckley/malthouse deal.

Zero chance of that happening. I dont think Lyon will ever coach.

He is back at the club already, we dont need to bring back all ex players in a coaching role. It is already good seeing the numbers that Jimmy and Co have brought back to the club. They have really done a great job at re-uniting the old Dees.

Said board came to decision late last night. We'll see.

Yeah I saw that too. But its not really going out on a limb. People were calling it days after Thompson left.

I didnt mean this tweet, because I think it will happen. There have just been so many others that have been way off the mark.

Agree re: some way off tweets.

There were some calls for Sanderson too to be honest. Part of my original post though was in indirect reference to Scott as a possible assistant for our club.

Yeah I know mate, I would take Scott in a second if he is interested.

Just a name from out of the blue which ill throw in for the defensive coach. But how about Nathan Bassett.Has taken Norwood from 7th last year to the grand final this year which they only lost by 1 goal. The list was also worse than the one they had last year as the club wasnt aloud to recruit or get any Crows or Power youngsters which they drafted. They lost older experienced players in Kris Massie & Luke Jericho yep made a big leap up the ladder. All the commentators here are saying Crows & power would be mad not to take him & think he will be AFL bound next year or year after. All opposition coaches of the finals side said Norwood played with a defensive set up & zone far superior to anything they had ever seen in the SANFL & said it was AFL standard.Norwood also conceded less goals this year than anyone else in SANFL keeping the years goals against to under 7 per game

This is a call I really like. Our defence has the players but many people have questioned our structures, in particular on kick outs. A coach who is strong in these areas would be ideal.

I wouldn't mind seeing Scott in th e job also, although he was a bit of a thug and I'd hate to see that passed on to the players.

I too would take Chris Scott in a second if he had any interest, however if he misses out the Head Coaching role at Geelong he will remain at Freo. Unfortuntely for Chris his best chance was Port, which contrary to the reports was not a 100% unanimous decision by the board to back Primus.

It would take an enormous offer (not necessarily $$) to get Chris over to the east coast as another assistant coach role. Whilst Harvey may attract a large amount of recognition for Freo's improvement this year, according to inner reports from within Freo (and another club with family ties...) Scott is considered as critical for their future for their improvement both from a game plan and development perspective.

I've read that Scott is keen to find a job at a Melbourne club if he doesn't get the Geelong role.

I think Freo has lost him.

I agree Lambchop will never coach, just like there once was a push for Gerard Healey. Both r 2 entrenched and well paid in the media to come on board as a head coach. But we can dream, maybe Todd Viney some time in the future.

Pretty sure he is the new Geelong coach.

Who else is available? A disenchanted Sanderson?

Yeah, Sleepy Hollow are giving themselves up until the start of their pre-season to find a coach. Cook said mid November. Although, Bomba has annointed Sanderson as a successor at Geelong and believes he is ready for the senior gig.

Geelong are now saying they will name their new coach tomorrow (18/10). That will give us one or both of Sanderson or C.Scott to aim for if we are interested. I wonder if we have sounded either of them out to see if they might be interested in the Dees, if they miss out on the top job at the Cattery.

In the MFC assistant coach thread I mentioned that I believe Scott has the GFC job. Sanderson would be a juicy get.

Better earlier than later when they start pre-season (mid Nov).

Interesting that JJJ has heard Scott. Spy&Source (deepthroat) claims it is Hinkley. We'll find out soon enough.

What do you guys think of Sanderson? If he's overlooked @ Geelong, he may want out.

Is he over qualified?

Hemay find himself in a similar position as Mark" Bomber" Reilly whom filled in as interim coach after the sacking of Neil Daniher and took on the role at Carlton as the 2ic- no longer as Richardson has been placed in that role..Maybe worth lookingat it he did not get the full time senior coach. I still like Laidley if not Max Hudghton.

SEN reporting Scott. The fact that the players wanted Sanderson might be enough for Sanderson to walk as him staying may cause problems for Scott getting hold of the playing group.

Sanderson, I believe, would have links to Bailey & Mahoney from their time at Port.

Would be a handy get.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
