In my humble opinion Melbourne v Essendon has traditionally been one of the only genuine contests in the AFL where a jumper clash exists.

The AFL makes us (and other teams) wear the alternative strips in many games when it is simply unnecessary (e.g. last weekend v St Kilda) - but this week have decided that Essendon and Melbourne will both wear their traditional strips.

Am I the only person who thinks this situation is utterly nonsensical??

Just goes to show that the whole clash jumper issue isn't about the game, it's about the extra revenue gained from selling an alternative jumper.

Agree, dont understand how essendons clash barely made a change, from what i remember its just a Bigger sash.

Shouldnt be our problem though, no home team should have to wear an alternative strip.

I'm sorry, I may have missed something. Are you saying that by playing in our HOME jumper this week, it's an example of how the AFL wants us gone?

It's ok. The AFL figure that with both teams having red in their jumpers, the umpires will be dressed in dark blue to avoid any clash.

We will smash em by so much that it won't be an issue!

Surely the Essendon clash outfit of the wider red sash AND those red shorts would be perfect to refrain from any clashes!

We would be mainly of navy blue (a dark colour); Essendon of bright read (a light colour).

never could understand why teams dont do for there alternative strip the way nba do, swap the colours around.... bummers should wear a red jumper with a black slash and red shorts while we wear our normal red and blue with blue shorts, simple isnt it? and when we are the away team we wear a blue V or what ever it is with red the main colour with red shorts...... is that stupid or am i close too the money?

A perfect example of why the clash jumper is a complete joke, with last rounds st.kilda game just as poignant.

We just should never wear white-Essendon don't & good on them (first time i have ever praised those Bastards!!)

Mark my words, the AFL plans on having the Tassie Devils in the competition in the near future, and we're the one's pencilled in to be moved down there.

Correct, if they are not told to wear white, then we as a club must Fight for our colours the same way essendon have fought for theirs.

I think the rule is more along the lines of red no longer being classified as a "light" colour, meaning Essendon's current clash jumper is out, but they won't be forced to wear white specifically - just a colour that meets the AFL's definition of light. We're not forced to wear white either - that's just what we've chosen so we meet the AFL's conditions for the alternate jumper.

I've been reading BomberBlitz and I was surprised at how many of their supporters seemed to agree that Essendon should fall in line with the rest of the AFL.

I agree that it's time for the AFL to stop dicking around and enforce a "one rule for all" policy - and I expect this will be reflected in Essendon's clash jumper in 2011. In the mean time we just have to suffer the clash this week, because Essendon do not have an appropriate clash jumper.

There's a laundry list of holes to pick in your amazing conspiracy theory, but I'm just going to start with having you identify an occasion when we've had to wear a clash guernsey for a home game.

You forgot the bit about inventing the game in the first place.

And yes, I think that the powers that be want one of Melbourne, North Melbourne or Richmond to be moved to Tassie in the near future. That way they maintain an 18 team competition and still allow the massive Tasmanian bid to have their team. Richmond are probably the best fit, given that they can still be called the tigers, but I doubt anyone at the top cares which of the three go, as long as one of them does.

Yet it shares the name with the city also know as Australia's home of sport, and the MCG is the main stadium of Melbourne.

RM I agree with your point, but as a team that's got itself out of a big hole the way it has and the team most likely to be fighting out premierships with GC and GWS, I do't think we're going anywhere.

Get rid of North Melbourne, they're struggling the most by far
