Contracts

Recommended Posts

With so many of our young players doing so well, how would you plan on MFC being in the best position (financially) to keep them all?

Scully, Gysberts, Gawn & Fitzpatrick - 2 yr contracts

Trengove & Tapscott - 3 yrs

Grimes, McKenzie - ?

Watts - out of contract end of this year (interesting one)

I gather this year we're paying every cent allowed under the salary cap on front-ended contracts.

I presume $300k+ is pretty much standard for a no.1 draft pick in 2nd contract?

I think this year's salary cap is $7.95M per club.

usually you would probably think so, but there was an interesting discussion about this on SEN (or MMM - was flicking between both) on Saturday morning.

Apparently the GWS are making a big play for Dustin Martin, offering him up to $500k a year (as reported by either SEN or MMM) - what they were saying is that the young guns will be overpaid in the next coming years as dictated by what GWS or GC will offer these players. Clubs have to try and counteract these types of payments with big money in order to keep them.

if i was Richmond I would be fuming if this happened

We have to pull out all stops to ensure our young stars stay ours!

I don't care who we get rid of to keep them but they are our future.

As years go on our current more senior players will retire and make more

money available but we just have to keep them out of the GC and GWS vultures way.

Meh. I have faith in the new and improved MFC to get it right, and I also have faith that the young guns can see a bright future with this team.

She'll be right.

MFC have been very astute in front loading contracts withour young guns to ensure we have plenty of flexibility to negotiate in future when their contracts come up for renewal.

It should stand us in good stead.

Watts said after Melbourne drafted him he was a bit worried if he was going to be staying home or having to go WA,so i think he will stay here. Who else is out of contract?

I'm at work at the moment, but at home I have a list of all the Melbourne players out of contract at seasons end, I'll post it later on when I return.

Pretty sure Tapscott is on a three year deal, same as Trengove.

I wouldn't worry about this. IMO we are looking like the next Geelong. Look how many stars they manage! And if star players start leaving clubs due to money as appossed to passion for the jumper, I will stop following AFL. It's about management, and I think MFC will be fine. DIE Broke Mcleans!

It is a lot of players out of contract at seasons end. Hopefully there'll be a lot of re-signing of players during the season.

FFS this is pathetic (I know you were just reporting you heard it...). Martin like all draftees is on a two year contract. They are NOT allowed to talk to him until the end of 2011!!!!!!!!

I don't necessarily think it's a lot. Few players are on deals longer than 2 years these days.

As a result, each year should see roughly half your list come out of contract.

Pretty simple.

"BRUCE COMMITS TO DEMONS

Melbourne utility Cameron Bruce has signed a new three-year contract. The deal takes the 27-year-old to the end of the 2010 season. Bruce has played 146 games since his debut for the Demons in 2000 and was runner-up in last year's club best-and-fairest award. "It's fantastic to know that I will be here for at least another three years," Bruce said. "I think we are improving as a list with a good balance of young and experienced players."

The Hun would indicate that this is not far from the truth.

Whilst GWS cannot speak to Martin right now, there's nothing stopping them from having a chat to his manager, Ricky Nixon.

Cheers Dee-luded, that's good to know he's out of contract at the end of this season, with McKenzie and Spencer probably coming off the rookie list at seasons end the hard call may well need to fall on a couple of players, Bruce may be one of them?

Doubt it.

Bell, Miller, PJ, McNamara.

That's 4 already that would go before Bruce.

Meeshan and Newton would be the first 2 gone, followed by Miller.

Bell and McNamara are likely delistings also.

Based on that, 5 players are gone, with the addition of Junior if he retires (which I reckon mightn't actually happen). I can't see why the club would want to turn the list over by any more than this seeing the position they are in at the moment, and the compromised draft with the Gold Coast and Richmond (getting the concession picks for being so dreadfully bad, not for tanking like we did last year :-))

Meesen and Newton are rookies.

The only thing worth considering is that rookie selection this year and next will be for players of significantly less quality than other years gone by.

Something to keep in mind - Newton & Meesen may not be automatic delistings.

Mercenaries are welcome to leave, No matter who they are.

I would rather follow die hard players than money grabbing vultures.

The only players that will leave MFC are the ones that are not getting a game or players that wish to go back to their home state.

I think a chat by Jimi Stynes will keep the group together.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
