Does anyone have any updates on how MT is actually going at training? Is he 'training the house down or not?'

He's done nothing in 3 yrs,.. Nothing to speak of

BTW- Can we refrain from using the 'He didn't get his chance because of Buddy and Roughie' bs excuse?

You Excel and improve more so around those sort of players than you will playing alongside our kids.

A bit unfair - you can only play a max of 2 rucks in a 22, perhaps Hawthorn only wanted 2 tall forwards. Gary Ablett snr springs to mind, could get a game with Dunstall and Dermie int eh side so left for better oppurtunities and we all know what happened next

Bit hard when Dunstall made his debut 3 years after Ablett played a handful of games for Hawthorn. and by the time Brereton kicked 5 on debut in the 1982 second semi Ablett was already back in the Drouin pub.

Back on topic, weigh up the risk:reward ratio. If Thorp turns out to be a spud, well he only cost a PSD pick. If he's even servicable then he's been a bargain.

If he's better than Newton, then he's a bargain???

The fact is that it's PSD1 is worth more than pick 66 or rookie draft pick 6.

It's a punt, but at least you get a talented player who hasn't made it at another club or a proven player who hasn't been re-signed by his current club.

It's less of a punt than pick 66 I think. You never know what you could get.

I was at the Junction today on my lunch brake. The forwards were out doing some drills but couldnt see MT anywhere. I'll keep a look out next time Im there.

altough i'm sure we tried, i don't think we have really used the PSD 1 pick to full adavntage. over the last two years we haven't been able to use it successfully as leverage to get some decent players to the club through the trade period at low cost. the actual pick we have dpne extremely well with jurrah last year. but one of the main benefits of the pick is the theat of other clubs losing a player for nothing. i find this a bit disappointing

Last 2 PSD picks have been awesome.

Jurrah= freak

Martin= ultra agile swingman. Has shown he is capable as big man in defence, attack and the ruck. Will be very useful player at 198cm 100kg

I say this without any evidence or being bothered to research so I'm sure I'll be shot down. But has there been a better no1 psd pick than jarruh in terms if upside?

I know their must have been some guns along the way but i would have thought jarruh would have been one of the best in terms of psd draft picks?

the quality of the players we aquired with the psd picks was not what i was getting at. personally i think we really lucked out with jurrah. extraudinary circumstances. and a further benefit may be the courage for the footy department to pick up his cousin in the upcoming draft who very well could also turn into a gem.

Jumping the gun on Martin IMO.

The guy hasn't worked out how to kick a footy yet, therefore he's not in my "22" for the start of next year.

Ofcourse Jurrah at pick 1 has been super and very lucky!

The problem with the PSD in recent years has been that changes in AFL rules have watered down its effectiveness. Many of the out of contract players who now can nominate in the National Draft were previously confined to the PSD. The inevitable result has to be a weaker PSD pool. The AFL isn't helping either by ignoring some of the deals done pre PSD which leave clubs like Sydney bragging they had "secured" Darren Bradshaw even though they don't have first pick.

The impression being given by the AFL is that it doesn't give two hoots about the integrity of the draft system anyway. They've ignored the conduct of Luke Ball and his manager as described by Craig Hutchison which, if proven, would surely have to be prejudicial to the draft. Perhaps next year we might hear the manager of the number one draft prospect coming out and saying his client doesn't want to move from Perth to Gold Coast. I wonder if the AFL might act then?

Good call. It's kind of disrespectful to the clubs with picks ahead of Sydney.

If we are going to 'trump' clubs in the draft, I'd rather we did it with Bradshaw than Ball.

Bradshaw ? Wtf...

Doesn't suit our needs one bit. Why waste a draft pick on him by "trumping" other clubs ? Personal satisfaction ?

Interesting call, condsidering we can't kick 10 goals a game.

Would we be interested in Daniel Bradhshaw though?

No point...would only use up games that a kid could use to develop.

I was thinking that too Jack.

What if a Scully/Trengove come out and said they did not want to go to MFC? So much for ND!

Also its scary to think that a young kid with football potential but no games and no club atm has a blood sucking manager gorging on them already! Sheesh.

Interesting call by you I would have thought. Considering wasting a "ND pick" on someone who has 2 years at the very most left in him.

Didn't he fail a medical test recently ?

Why hold a kid's development back and pick D.Bradshaw using a pick that could be used for an 18 yo, and yet see Bradshaw retire in a year or two ?

But who is Darren Bradshaw?

By God man, why would you want a player over 30? What would it achieve in terms of winning a premiership?

Wed, Nov 18, 2pm – Delisted primary list player draft nomination deadline

It appears as though 2pm today Wed 18 Nov should be instructive.

It's the deadline for delisted players to nominate for the ND.

Players who don't nominate presumably will nominate for the PSD because they have arranged their destination.

Don't agree with that logic. You can't use a dud* as the benchmark, otherwise you'll have a lot of very average "bargains" on your list.

*On the assumption that you're implying Newton is a dud.

That wasn't what I meant. I was following up on Chook in Perth's point about risk-reward ratio: "If Thorp turns out to be a spud, well he only cost a PSD pick. If he's even servicable then he's been a bargain." And trying to make the point that if Thorp's an improvement over our current options for both KPFs, then he's worth getting.

So has ANYONE been to training? Anyone seen how Mitch is going?? This is killing me.

I know what you meant and I still don't agree.

Incorrect criteria: If he is better than our existing key forwards, he is worth getting

Correct criteria: If he is good enough to be an AFL grade forward, he is worth getting.

Being an improvement on our current KPFs is faint praise and doesn't automatically make them worth getting. He could be an improvement on our existing KPFs, but still be rubbish and therefore still be wasting a spot on the list. Chris Tarrant (as a forward) would have been an improvement on our existing KPFs, but do you think he would've been worth getting?

As I said, Newton (and Miller) should not be used as the benchmark.
